- Windows XP MovieMaker >> Audio and VideoI have a problem that when saving my video... the
percentages goes at a slow rate, then all the sudden it
speeds up, sounds great, but no... when you go to watch
the video the video stops after a certain number of
clips, but the audio keeps going. And it never stops at
the same picture (oh yeah, this is a slide show set to
music). The audio always continues, but the pictures
always stop at a random point. Ever seen this and any
suggestions? Thanks a bunch

- Windows XP Security >> Running Windows XP on a system with no hard drive?Hi folks
does anyone know if it is possible to run Windows XP on a system
without a hard drive?
I was thinking of creating a 'hard-drive-less-system' running Windows
XP, but does the O/S require one, or can it be run purely from a CD?
Is this type of thing feasible?
Or if you know of any place that sells such a system I would be
interested.

- Windows XP Support >> My Memory is Like Quicksand!I have a situation that is plaguing and perplexing me. The simple
explanation is this:
Stuff gets stuck in memory.
It is now an everyday occurrence that some application or module that is
supposed to run and then go away doesn't go away. Sometimes it's a splash
screen for an application launching, sometimes it's a media player, and
other times it's a full-blown application. The one that fails me with 100%
consistency is the Adobe License Manager, adobelmvsc.exe, which kicks in
three minutes after a PDF file is opened and is supposed to check for a
legitimate license (which I have) and then go away. It never goes away.
iTunes frequently gets stuck, and several others are culprits.
When these programs or processes get stuck, there is no amount of prying in
Task Manager that can remove them. And because they refuse to release, the
Shutdown, Restart, or Logoff procedures hang in perpetuity.
As far as I know, the only recourse is to power-cycle, which I now do
multiple times per day.
I'd love to get to the bottom of this, but I don't really know where to
start. Any ideas...?

- Windows XP >> IE Open in New Window doesn't work.Hi,
My 2nd PC has WINXP SP1A and IE6 SP1 installed.
It works great except if I attempt to Right Click on a URL to open in a new
window - nothing happens, I just get a partialy drawn blank window. The same
happens when a webpage tries to open a new window. I don't have a Pop Up
Blocker or anything.
Any ideas on how to fix this? I've searched the Knowledge base but can't
find a fix.
Thanks,
Graham.

- Windows XP Security >> Event 59 XP Pro sp2 SideBySide errorsI am attempting to clean up after a failed sp2 application. The box now
works as a result of assigning the acount EVERYONE full control over the
System32 folder. I realize this is a poor security practice but the only
alternative would be to trash the build and start over from scratch. First
the environment. The box is a client of an SBS2000 network running XP Pro
sp2, ISA Firewall Client and the Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition 9.0
antivirus client. It has an AMD CPU and 512MB of RAM. Now the problem.
At every boot I find six errors in the Application Event Viewer, all Event
59. These occur in pairs. The first error mentions a dll for which the
Generate Activation Context failed and provides a full path to the dll. The
dll's involved are WININET.DLL, SHELL32.DLL and URLMON.DLL. The exact
messages for the first two of the six appears below. Kindly advise which
folders I need to change the secuerity settings on.

Windows XP Hardware >> port setup
Hi all
I am a new user to xp pro and have a small problem with setting up comm
ports
I do a manual comm port setup for my modem which works just fine under 98SE
then do a reboot as it suggests, when the system comes back up it dumps my
port configuration and then says new hardware found and sets up 2 comm 4's
and an extra LPT1. both comm ports then have the yellow exclamation mark.
Is there a way to force my port configuration and disable the autodection
phase, setting up the 2 bogus comm4's and the extra LPT1
other than that glitch the system is flyin
Thanks
Steve

- Windows XP Network >> How to make network adapter promiscuous?Running a Dell Dimension 3000, with built-in LAN adapter.
When running Suse Linux 9.2 on the machine, I tell Ethereal to operate
promiscuously, and I can see all the traffic on the LAN segment.
When I run Ethereal under Win XP Pro (with all the updates), again with
promiscuous enabled, all I can see is broadcast traffic and any traffic
to/from the Dell.
So it's obvious that the network adapter is not actually running
promiscuously under Win XP, even though I enabled it in Ethereal.
Any ideas on how I can persuade Win XP to switch the NIC into
promiscuous mode?

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> Since auto update installed CD Max, files won't save ... :>(MM 2.0.3312.0
Windows XP Pro 2002, SP2
Pentium 4 / 3-GHz
512 MB RAM
40-GB available HDD
I've used MM for some time, on files up to 100 MB, without problems, until
Windows auto update installed the CD Max patch. Since then, any file over 5
MB
goes into an infinite wait when saving to computer. The panel displays a
hard drive file definition to save into, but a top line message says, e.g.,
... preparing to save file to CD ROM - 9743286 estimated mins to save.
I uninstalled the CD MAX application in Control Panel / Add-Remove ...,
which completed normally per messages. After a reboot, the CD-Max logo still
appeared in the Save Movie panel, and the preceding CD-RoM save message still
appears in MM.
Any assistance appreciated. I'm in the process of converting family movies
for our children, and want to finish before the family reunion in August. If
MM can't be fixed in a timely manner, what other commercial software package
would do the trick, to enable me to finish. I'm AV-challenged, so simple
apps are good ... :>)

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Auto LogonI recently did a clean install of WinXP on a new hard drive with one user,
myself. It logged on automatically but, as I am populating it with software,
it has stopped logging on automatically. I suspect something called Genie
Backup Manager and have removed it but to no avail.
I download TweakUI to set the AutoLogon and it works once but not the second
time I boot up. I then sussed that TweakUI altered the setting in the
Registry at: HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\WinLogon\AutoAdminLogon from 0 to 1.
I tried this manually and it worked once but not subsequently. It seems that
the problem is that something is not letting the changes to the registry be
saved so they are lost when I shut down. I also noticed that I can no longer
sort the Start/Programmes list on the sub-menu.
Any ideas what is upsetting the registry or how I can force the changes to
be saved or what I can do to find out what is causing the problem?

- Windows XP Setup >> problems with viewing items on webpagesHi. I am needing some help in trouble shooting a problem
that no one has been able to shed light on. I don't know
what newsgroup to pick so I hope this one is ok. Over
the past month, I have suddenly noticed that alot of
webpages I try to visit, including my own home page have
a red small "X" in the spot where I believe a picture,
caption, heading, ect should be. I have no idea why this
has suddenly happened as prior to July, I had no problem
viewing anything. I wonder if I have a plug in problem
or something. I noticed that this only happens on some
pages as on others, the graphics are fine. Why would
this have suddenly occurred and how can I correct it?
This is not inpart to video or anything, just your basic
data from web page to webpage. Thank you.

Is this a security breach and how can i stop it?

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> ChkDskI have winXP, with 128mb of Ram and a 80gb HDD that has 6 partitions.
C-drive is the OS drive and D-drive is where all programs are installed.
All other drives are for data.
I have had this setup for about a month and it has been running smoothly.
Yesterday when the PC was started, it ran ChkDsk which was not scheduled. I
noticed it only ran the first 3 parts of ChkDsk instead of the normal 5
parts. After running ChkDsk, XP booted normally and everything looked fine.
I went to D-drive and tried to run Defrag. I got the message, "Cannot
perform defrag as D-drive is scheduled to run ChkDsk on the next reboot".
Again it had not been scheduled.
Then I did schedule both F-drive and D-drive to run ChkDsk on the next boot.
When rebooted, both the drives ran a complete ChkDsk. I then defragged
F-drive which defragged normally. When D-drive was selected to defrag, the
same message was received. Each boot, D-drive still runs the first 3 parts
of ChkDsk.
I ran a restore to 4 days previous to the problem starting, but the problem
still persists. Running ChkDsk only seems to be on D-drive as all others
are performing normally. BTW I do not have the HP scanner referred to in
Windows Knowledge base.
Does anyone have a clue why this is happening and how to fix the problem?
