- Windows XP Setup >> Cannot upgrade 98 w/XP Home Full VersionWent to Fry's and bought a new MB, New Hard drive and new
processor. Asked for XP Home upgrade. The sales guy told
me he would include the full version since I was buying
hardware, I agreed. After I installed my new hard drive
and other stuff, I transferred all my old data to the new
hard drive. When I tried to upgrade my Win 98 with the
full Home version, it says I can only do a new install and
lose all my data. I don't want to lose anything, that is
the point of upgrading! Now I am left with losing
everything, or not upgrading. I need to know if I have any
other options. Thanks!

- Windows XP Security >> Standalone workstations & local policies. Apply & remove w/ scriptHi all.
I have 190 standalone XP Pro SP2 machines that I need to be able to restrict
access to things like desktop settings, etc. There are two profiles on each
machine that are both administrator-level accounts (for the running of
Point-Of-Sale software).
I can restrict desktop settings using the Local policy, however this applies
to all users on the machine. When our support people connect remotely to
these computers, they are restricted, too.
Is there a way to apply & remove the local policies via a script or command
that could run in the 'Startup'?
(The support people log into the machine as "Administrator" and the user
logs in as "Manager")
I've read the "Windows XP Security Guide", but there's nothing for local
policies like what I need. It's mostly for "security" restrictions. I just
need to keep the users from changing things and still have the support people
unrestricted.
Thanks.

- Windows XP >> diplay settings>appearance tab PROBLEMI installed a program called windowblinds 4.1. This
program replaces the visual styles in the appearances tab
with "windowblinds skins"
Later I uninstalled windowblinds. The appearances tab now
stalls a minute to open and I does not show all the
visual styles installed on my PC but rather only ones
that came with windows (xp and classic style). As I
understood, the appearances tab was not being updated
with visual styles that I have.
The themes tab however still works.
Any ideas how I can fix this ?
thanks in advance

- Windows XP >> Windows XP Pro won't hibernate from Welcome ScreenI have a relatively new generic XP (SP1) system. It is configured with 3
accounts and fast user switching. Each account has power user or admin
privlege. I've configured each to have a screen saver that hibernates after
2 hours.
If I leave the computer with an account actively logged in (not at the
welcome screen), the machine hibernates after two hours, with no problems -
just as it should.
If I leave the computer at the welcome screen (regardless of the number of
accounts logged in), it will never hibernate. I would like it to hibernate
after 2 hours of inactivity regardless of who is logged in or whether you're
at the welcome screen or not.
I guess the question is, what controls the power/hibernate policy when at
the welcome screen? I can't find any answers after scouring google groups
and the MS website. Can anyone help with this? Thanks in advance.

- Windows XP Setup >> Switch installation from one PC to another?Hi,
I just bought a new PC with XP Home (OEM) installed. My "old" PC (that I
want to keep, it's still very good) has XP Pro (OEM) installed.
Of course, my new PC is the latest and greatest, and that will be my new
workhorse. My old one will be for the children to play games, and later on
do their homework etc.
Now ... I'd like to switch XP Pro to my NEW PC and (conversely) XP Home to
my OLD PC.
Is this possible? Technically and legally?
Of course, I have both (original) OEM installation disks in my posession.
For further information: on my NEW PC, which currently has XP Home installed,
I have not activated XP Home yet (still 28 days left).
Kind greetings,
Herman (from Holland)

After 3 hours with ms tech support there was no resolution
to this problem. The final suggestion ? reinstall the OS.

- Windows XP Security >> changing passwords? We currently have a couple of XP pro pcs on our network. We needed to
change there network passwords (Server 2003 AD). After changing them on the

anything on the client PC or does changing it on the server (active
directory user and computers) get the job done. We changed them back to the
original for now.

- Windows XP Setup >> Outlook Express continually DiallingA friend has Windows XP Home and Outlook Express 6.
Each time she opens up her computer and after the desktop is displayed
the computer automatically dials up her ISP - Virgin.net. This means
that she cannot use her computer without going on line.
The only way she can operate her computer is to unplug the phone line.
Even then the modem continues to try to dial up her ISP.
I have checked that "Never dial a connection" is ticked in the Internet
Options, Connections Dialogue Box, I have removed the modem and
re-loaded it, I have done a full Virus Scan all to no avail.
I would appreciate any suggestions as to what might be causing this and
any suggestions on how to stop it.

- Windows XP Support >> problems with new installationHi,
I just installed Windows XP Home on my computer. I had Windows ME. The
installation seemed to go alright but now a lot of my old programs don't
work. Also all the stuff that was on my desktop is gone. I can navigate and
find some of my old folders on my c drive, but when I open some of them they
are empty, but should have files in them. Can someone tell me what is
happening.
Thanks

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Slow Down In Multimedia PerformanceI have recently installed Windows XP Pro on a clean hard
drive but im experiencing some sound and performance
problems.
Everytime I play a sound, be it an MP3, .Wav file etc.
the sound stutters and slows down. It doesnt matter
whether its in Winamp or Windows Media 9. Video files
pause and skip too.
Another thing I have noticed is that whenever I load up
Winamp or WM9, the mouse pointer skips and stutters
across the screen too- meaning there is probably some
sort of performance issue at the heart of this.
All my drivers are up to date- and there are no conflicts
whatsoever. I ran Sandra Diagnostics on my computer and
it did state that my "IOQD" level was set too low and by
putting my motherboard to its "optimised" level it should
resolve the problem. My BIOS is now set to "optimised"
but still no difference to the sound and performance
problem!
I have a P3 800, 384mb RAM, A 20GB Master and a 80GB
Slave Hard Drive and 64mb AGP GeForce 2. My Soundcard is
on-board (C-Media 8738)
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

- Windows XP >> Remote AssistanceI was able to establish a connection with another computer using Remote
Assistance. They have Home XP and I have XP Professional. I was able to
take everything out of their startup (except for their AntiVirus) using
System Configuration Utility (msconfig). I also cleared a lot out through
Internet Options. I also found a network connection that wasn't being used,
so I disabled it, since she was using her Dial Up Connection.
The next time we tried to establish a Remote Assistance connection, I get an
error telling me that there was a problem resolving the host name. We
resent the invitation several times, assuming that it might have just timed
out. We got the host name resolution error several times.
Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this? I have tried to
figure out what I might have disabled by mistake that could have caused this
problem.
Thank you for your assistance in this matter.
