- Windows XP Update >> Windows Update KB896424 - Breaks IE Security Zones!!!!http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?kbid=896424
I had a weird problem this morning. I have been working on an IE
application, and this application opens windows (using window.open())
without a status bar, but this morning these windows opened with status
bars.
After a bit of testing and head scratching, I realised that my intranet
based website was being shown as in the Internet zone according to the
status bar.
Off to Tools, Options, Security, Local Intranet, Sites, Advanced I go,
and my list is empty.
Humm, the security update wiped all my zones (I thought). So I added
my intranet URL back, OK'd everything... but the browser still shows it
as in the internet zone. So I go back into the sites dialog, and the
URL I had added is not there. I try and add it again, but I get a
message saying it is already in another zone.
As I knew there had been a windows update last night, I went to
add-remove programs and removed update KB896424, rebooted.
I can now add URL's back into my Local Intranet zone, and my
application is now working again. The *ONLY* thing I did to get this
working again is uninstall this update and it only started happend
after this update arrived, so it is almost certainly the culprit.
It auto-updated again over the weekend, and it broke IE in exactly the
same way. Uninstalling the update again fixes the problem.
How can I stop this update from installing? I have for now disabled
automatic installs.

- Windows XP Security >> trusted root validationIs there any anti-virus or other anti-malware applications out there
that do trusted root validation?
In other words, enumerate the list of trusted root certificates loaded
in any browsers on a host and check them against a known valid list to
ensure all are legit? For computers that are members of an AD domain
with a PKI infrastructure, either accept the trusted root for the AD
domain or (in an enterprise suite), allow the administrator to add to
the list.
Thanks,

- Windows XP Network >> networkingI recently ran McAfee diagnostics and had the program fix
a couple of potential problems; I don't remember the
names and can not duplicate them. Since this time I have
been unable connect to this computer via my network. When
I run network diagnostics I receive a failed notice for
default gateway, DHCP server and DNS server. I do receive
a message that my IP passed. I need some help resolviing
this matter. I can not find any assistance on the
Microsoft site. Thanks, Chuck

- Windows XP Setup >> reinstalling XPWe have to reformat the hard drive and reinstall XP to
fix a few problems. Our problem with our computer seems
to be running slow and the DVD does not work. The
hardware supplier feels it is a software problem and
clear the computer and reinstall all software.
We are running Windows XP home ed. We have tried going
into safe mode but are unable to find XP to remove in the
Add/remove programs. Then tried safe mode with C: prompt.
Tried as per instructions cd\windows\system32 ..
osunist.exe
This did not work and end up with an error with the
registration. We have activated windows and it is
registered.
We have also tried repair Windows XP etc. Now get error
GetIUMS not located in dynamic library MSDART.DLL
How do we reformat the hard drive and reinstall windows
XP?

- Windows XP Setup >> DVD malfunctionsTo Newsgroup, I have a DVD player, using Power DVD and
the disc no longer plays. A box comes up that says i
have to lower the screen resolution and colour, and
depth...to 800 x 600 with 256 colours, or adjust to
refresh frequency to 75 Hz... which i did through
options/tools/ properties... no change. i turned on and
off the computer to see if that would change. nothing.
It also said that the "current display mode is not
supported"... and a code number (can provide if needed
for troubleshooting) It also recommended switching to D-
Draw Overlay Display... which i don't know where to
find. i found one area that said "display", but nothing
with overlay display... and cannot be adjusted. if
anyone can help, i'd be very happy. thank you. wezjeb.

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> Still durationNow, this is not really a still it is single frame split from an otherwise
blurry clip. To save this precious picture and to give it enough display
duration I dragged it to the time line a number of times. Is there a better
way to do this?

- Windows XP Setup >> Unable to send readable messages in Korean or JapaneseQuestion
I just went WGA from Korean Xp Pro to English Xp Pro causing me a number of
headaches, could not get Korean here in the Sates for some reason.
The problem I am having is when I send a message typed either in Japanese or
Korean the people in Japan or Korea cannot read the message. It is all
garbage.
I have install every thing I can find related to East Asian Languages I can
from Microsoft, added a number of fonts from Korean and Japanese sources.
All to no avail, no one can read our emails in Korea or Japan. I am
wondering should I convert over to an OEM version of Xp or Vista. Because
none of the language packs work.
I set my computer for Korean and tried Japanese still the same issue.
Also all my music files will not display Korean or Japanese. I have to
physically go in and edit the files to redisplay the fonts. Still will not
work with most Japanese fonts but will with Korean.

- Windows XP >> XP windows updateEver since I updated my XP machine with all the necessary windows updates,
the menu you right hand click on the desktop says "can't find requested
string" and when I click on this it comes up with an error that says "Windows
cannot find "can't find requested string" which is very strange. It is not a
major issue just strange and the fact that it is my machine again that does

Windows XP Setup >> XP Service Pack 1 on disc
I recently ordered XP Service Pack on disc from the
Microsoft website. They promptly took my money but never
sent me the disc and when I look for support online the
message I get has to do with them not knowing anything
about me. Does anyone know how I can talk customer
service and get a refund from these thieves?

How did you pay?
Credit card? Contact credit card company.
Also try here:

If you think Microsoft are thieves after this one incident, I suggest
you go to Linux or another source you trust.
If there are other incidents that also support your belief that
Microsoft are thieves, why did you give your money?

"Never sent the disc"? And how long, exactly, have you waited, pray? It says
to allow at least 30 days for delivery.

- Windows XP Setup >> Print Screen Windows XP Login DialogsHi All, Thanks in Advance
We have just set up a Win 3k Server for approx 300 desktops and I have been left with the task of writing learning guides for people on how to use the new network (users are used to working with Netware). I have tried the old Alt+Print Screen with no luck. This is obviously a security feature... somewhere. Is there any way to get/are these on the microsoft site/does anyone have these login dialogs including change password dialog screen shots for XP

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> Exporting Movie Maker Projects to other software? Is there any plugins/software which will allow Movie Maker projects to be
imported into another editing progoram?
I have played around with MM for a small projects, but have recently created
a 30min film, because I wanted to use the excellent automovie tool. The
problem is that it refuses to create a movie file (be it save to DV camera,
AVI file etc) - i.e it creates 98% of the file and then tells me I don't have
enough space/files are incorrect etc (which is not the case). I have tried
breaking the file into two smalled projects and followed much of the advice
which has been posted on sites about registering files. I've tried exporting
the file on different machines and still haven't solved what looks like a
common problem.
Therefore, I was hoping that it might be possible to take the project file
and use another edit program to render the movie.
