- Windows XP Network >> Javascript issues after SP2I have two computers, both with XP professional. Within
the last week I updated with SP2 on both. Now both have
the identical problem of having javascript errors in
every major browser. One machine only has internet
explorer and it always gives errors, such as when trying
to open a hotmail msg (unable to). The other machine has
IE and Opera and Foxfire, and the latter two simply sit
when I click a hotmail link.
I have searched far and wide and experimented on machine
#2 (with the multiple browsers) going so far as to
uninstall SP2, unfortunately to no avail in fixing this
problem.
The computers also both have Norton Antivirus 2003,
updated to whatever is the latest version. This and SP2
are the only similarities shared between them.
It is crucial for me to be able to get javascript to work
at I do my schoolwork over an online interface that
requires it!
thanks

- Windows XP >> No wireless connectivity at hotspotsHi there. How do I configure the wireless settings on my computer such that
I will pick up wireless signals when I visit various hotspots? When I go to
the Wireless Network Connection dialog and refresh the network list, I get
the message that windows cannot configure this wireless connection and that
if I have enabled another program to manage this wireless connection, to use
that software. Yes, I used to connect to the internet wirelessly through my
mom's desktop by virtue of a 2 Wire modem that was sent to me by SBC Yahoo.
However, I think I disabled abled it somehow when I moved and got a new
broadband internet connection. I really have absolutely no idea where to
begin here. Please could I have some pointers. Thank you.

- Windows XP Support >> IE 7 problemsClear DayOn 10/22 I was prompted by MS Updates to DL new version of IE 7. It
was to replace the Beta, already installed. It did not go smoothly. My PC is
now running on fumes as I cannot access the Internet via IE 7 which is
somehow being blocked from functioning properly. I am using a circa 2002
Dell Dimension 4400, 40GB hard drive with 512RAM. Had been running a little
slow but was otherwise serviceable. Now every time I try using IE I get the
generic error message & report it to MS. On start up or when trying to get
to my AOL I get a small window with a yellow triangle containing (!) and the
word "topic". Also get stuff like (HTTP ERROR 500-INTERNAL SERVER ERROR) and
(Windows cannot find....) followed by what looks like some kind of registry
address. Looks like the only thing still working net wise is Outlook Express
(can't do Internet file attachments).
I am an intermediate at best on this stuff but for the first time I'm at a
loss as I have been unable to resolve any of this on my own.
Is there anything I can do or is it time for Rent-a-Geek?

- Windows XP Security >> Access denied filesAfter having my pc upgraded to XP Home, I tried to create
shortcuts to progs and files on my desktop in the same way
as in windows 98 - ie: click on file, select shortcut;
shortcut appears in file/prog list with (2) after it; drag
it from list to desktop - job done.
However, I find now I have a desktop with 10 or so
unworkable shortcuts, can't delete - "Access denied",
can't rename, can't clean desktop.
I understand this is a security safeguard, but these are
MY files and I am the Administrator. How can I delete
these faulty shortcuts. I realise now, that the method
required to place shortcuts is different in XP.
Advice welcome

- Windows XP >> Why won't Windows Messenger start?A little while ago, I got annoyed that WM would keep starting up when not
wanted, so I took the advice of some tech site and made some registry
changes to prevent it from opening, automatically.
The problem is now it won't open at all, even if I directly attempt to open
it. So, I uninstalled it though the Windows components option of the
Add/Remove Programs control panel and downloaded the install program from
Microsoft.
But even after re-installing, Messenger still won't open.
What can I do?

- Windows XP Support >> "Access is denied" for LocalService and NetworkService accounts??Hello,
Two days ago I've noticed that some of my system services aren't
starting
and returnig "Access is denied" error. Problem concerns to services
that
are logging to NetworkService and LocalService account only. My idea
was
to change logon account to LocalSystem and now everything works fine,
but
I don't want to leave it for that manner for a long time. As we all
know
LocalSystem account have all privileges and therefore is very unsafe.
Maybe you had such error in the past and can help me to solve it?? I
have
no idea how to enable locked accounts.. :(

- Windows XP Hardware >> XP recognition of FAT32 slave drive dataXP recognizes the slave(2nd)HD, and can populate it (HD
properties), but will no longer recognize the data. It is
f'matted w/ FAT32. I can access data with a w98 startup
disk. Installing it in other w98 machines, I can
manipulate the data on the drive. Even a fresh install of
XP didn't rectify the situation.
Master drive is NTFS, slave is FAT32.
Why won't XP recognize the FAT32 data?
Thanks for any ideas...

- Windows XP Hardware >> Disk boot failure insert system disk and press enterI am running Windows XP. My computer and hard drive are about 2.5
years old. Recently, I have not made any software or hardware changes.
Yesterday, after booting correctly and using it for a couple of hours,
my computer hung (this has not happened in months). Turning it off
from Start button was not possible. When I tried the manual reboot
button it gave the message
"Disk boot failure insert system disk and press enter"
I turned it off manually with the on/off switch and on again and it
was OK for a while before it hung again. After this happened for abut
five times, it worked well. I was able to reboot from the Star button
or by pushing the reboot button. I turned it off last night and on
this morning and it is fine.
I ran CHKDSK and it gave no errors.
Is this an indication that the hard drive should be replaced?

Windows XP Hardware >> Scandisk/Chkdisk with multiple harddrives on win XP
In my computer I have a RAID with 2 Western Digital 10k
RPM drives on the onboard ICH5 Controller and then two
Seagate 160GB SATA drives on the onboard Promise SATA
controller. The problem is that every time I start up my
computer (Windows XP Home) The chkdisk utility tries to
run on both of the Seagate drives. I have let it run many
times and it has never found any problems. I would like
to know if there is anything I can do to stop this.
Thanks

Windows XP Hardware >> Scandisk/Chkdisk with multiple harddrives on win XP
Three shots:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=316506
Click Start-Run-Type regedit and click OK. Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager
Change the following key to:
BootExecute - autocheck autochk *
Or try tweak #82 on left side:

- Windows XP Support >> HELP: Video Player keeps on "restoring" window size from "maximise"My Windows XP SP2 has been annoying me a lot recently. Basically everytime
when I watch a movie with "maximised" Windows Media Player 10, or RealPlayer
10, or Media Player Classic 6.4 then at random times the player would
"restore" the window size, as if some other program spawned or received a
notification. But guess what, there is no other apparent window or program
to be seen. I make sure my MSN, Virus Scanner, etc are all switched off. But
every so often (regularly), my maximised video player would "restore"
itself. Is it Windows Update in background? I don't know, but what would be
handy would be a "forced" maximise mode. And what gives a program privilege
to "restore" some other window program?
Has anyone experienced this too?

- Windows XP Network >> Registry settings at logonWe manage networks in 5 schools, with about 1800 users
and 380 PCs and laptops.
I am trying to adjust the users' registry settings during
login. The users are on XP Pro workstations logging on
to an NT4 domain. The users are in a group which is a
member of the workstation Power users' group.
The users' login script runs a Kix script to make the
registry changes to the existing keys, but the script
returns an Access denied error for some of the changes.
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies
HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Restrictions
are the main problem. NT4server doesn't have enough
facilities to restrict these in group policy editor.
Does anyone have any ideas for fixing this?
Am I in the right newsgroup?
Thanks in advance,
Mike
