- Windows XP Security >> Conflicting Spyware ToolsI've installed products from Lavasoft and 12 Ghosts to rid
my pc of scumware. Now that Ad-Aware is installed, it
appears 12 Ghosts is no longer working. Does one cancel
the other out?
Do I need both on my pc? I've got my firewalls on,
scumware blockers installed and all my security updates
from MS but it seems you're never really secure. Some
damned people out there need to really get a life instead
of "hackin'" all day!

- Windows XP Security >> System utility problems after SP1 patch installedThe SP1 service installation procedure seems to have
caused both the backup and checkdisk Windows systems
utilities to totally lock up the computer after
installation, to the extent I can't even power off. I
installed the updates in October, 2002 and had this
problem, then used the "System Restore" feature to get
back to where I was. I waited 6 months to try again, but
the same problem occurs now. Everything seems to be
working well. Suggestions? I am up to date on critical
updates based on the Windows XP support site.

- Windows XP >> file deletion through windows installerHi
I am having a doubt regarding windows installer. Whenever windows
installer is used for uninstallation of any software, then the file
deleted through MSIexec.exe doesn't use NtDeletefile for deleting
files.i have verfied using windows debugger. My overall purpose is to
get notified whenever any software is getting installed/un installed.
How can i proceed to achieve the same.

- Windows XP Network >> After installing sp2 on XP Home, My network dosnt work!!I realised that this could be a problem for many people, since the
introduction of service pack 2. I have been trying to find a soultion for
this problem for many months now, but have finally found something that
worked! Feel free to use the instructions below if you are suffering the same
problems!
You need to use you Registry editor, which may sound a bit scary, but is
quite easy to use if you follow these instructions:
Click START,
Click on RUN
In the text box enter REGEDIT, and click OK,
The registry editor should open,
Click on the cross next to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Then go to SYSTEM
Then go to CONTROL
Then Select LSA
In the right hand screen you should see some icons appear,
Find the two that say restrict anonymous, and double click on them both.
You need to change both their value datas to 0
Once you have done this, Exit the registry editor, by clicking the cross,
and then RESTART your computer!
You should find that this solves the problem, Whatever the outcome, let me
know!!

- customize >> can't get new account workingI'm wanting to make seperate user accounts for myself and my husband, but it won't work properly. I create a new account (computer administator) but when I go to log on to it an error screen comes up and says
"Windows cannot load the user's profile but has logged you on with the default profile for the system. DETAIL - The system cannot find the file specified.
Then when i go into that account I can't do anything. Can't change any of the display options like background and stuff. The only thing I've been able to do is change the start menu from xp to classic.
I'm sure this is probably a stupid question from a newbie, but I'd appreciate it if anyone had any ideas.

- Windows XP Hardware >> CD-ROM drivesI recently upgraded my Windows 98 to Windows XP because
something inside my Windows 98 crashed, and caused the
whole thing to go haywire. I installed Windows XP, and
everything works like normal. Except my second cd-rom
drive, which is an Acer CD-RW 20x10x40, apparently isn't
even in my computer. I open my computer and it only has
one cd drive in it, which is my DVD-ROM drive. My second
cd drive still lights up and opens and closes as if its
perfectly fine and working, although my computer wont
detect it. I've gone through the Add new hardware program
under control panel and gotten nowhere. This cd drive
didnt come with an installation disk either, so I'm lost
what to do. How do i get my computer to detect a second
cd drive?

- Windows XP Support >> Machine checkDuring XP startup sequence, I see in the Event Log, a number (~6) of
Machine Check records, ID26. The associated explanation says "unable to load
driver, missing or corrupt, etc". XP always runs up Ok in the end and
operates normally.
Is it possible to determine which specific driver is causing the problem?
In a boot log, I also note a cluster of "unable to load driver" entries
early in the sequence; this cluster, or parts of, being repeated again and
again. Eventually the boot completes.
The first entry always refers to "acpi drivers", so does this infer the
reason for the subsequent failures?

- Windows XP Support >> Help Help Help with taskbar sizeSomehow I made the task bar at the bottom of my screen double wide so
systray icons are stacked three high instead of one line. I thought I
could just move the cursor to edge of taskbar until I get an arrow
then adjust the width. I can make it wider but not thinner. Am I
missing something?
email response not expected but to respond remove .uk at end

Windows XP MovieMaker >> Possible to save a trimmed clip?
Is it possible to save a clip after it has been edited. I
want to be able to save the new smaller clip to be used
again in another movie. Currently MM@ seems to keep all
the information which I already have in the original
capture. Ideally, I would like to make smaller edited
clips and save them in a collection.
Thanks in advance.

Windows XP MovieMaker >> Possible to save a trimmed clip?
Yes, as long as you edit the clip from the collections (not from your movie
timeline).
Select a clip in the collection, and use the preview viewer to split the
clip into sections. New "split-clips" will appear in the collection window
each time you click on the split button. You can then (optionally) delete
all of the unwanted clips from your collection.
Note that this does not alter the original video clip's source file. Only
the start/end points of the split-clips in the collection are modified.

Windows XP MovieMaker >> Possible to save a trimmed clip?
and if you have done what Bob suggests and want to save that split clip as a
file, you need to drag it to the timeline and go to File | Save Video
File...

- Windows XP Security >> Folder Security gets changed back automaticallyI am running XP to access an NT file server. I change the security setting
to add admin and to change everyone's access so that everyone only has read

However, after a little while Admin is removed Everyone has full control and

Directory but I dont understand what is happening here and what is causing
this switch. Can anyone help?

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> USER created folders: size or space RESTRICTION?I ask because I created a folder and entered 22,608 items compromising
1,591.85MB. (1.5 GB mol)
I have an additional 1,165 items compromising 80.79MB which will NOT move or
copy in 'normal windows' or 'safe mode' with "Explorer' or 'ThumbsPlus'.
I then copied the 1,165 to a CD and tried copying to the folder under:
'normal windows', 'safe mode' using; Explorer'/'ThumbsPlus.
ERROR on EVERY attempt: "*The directory or file cannot be created*".
OS: XP Pro FAT32
HD: Maxtor 160GB [6Y160PO]
Partitions: 4 @ 40GB each (38.1/5 actually - I think)
Free Space Availabe on attempted drive: 27.4GB
Defragmentd attempted drive: yes
Ran chkdsk on attempted drive: yes; with no problems reported.
Properties for both folders I attempted to . . move from (which I also
created) report: Read Only [Green-SQUARE] Archive [CHECKED].
I did NOT choose those options when I created the folders and Windows will
NOT allow me to leave all boxes--- unmarked/unchecked.
HOW and WHY has a restriction been imposed on folders I created???

networked printer through the its connection. When I click on view computers

- Windows XP >> RCP or RPCevery now and then, i'll get a window that shows up and

- Windows XP Setup >> HijackedUsing Internet Explorer and running Windows XP Pro with Webroot Spy Sweeper
and MCAfee for virus detection.
Spy Sweeper shows my system to be clean and McAfee donâ??t indicate any
problems, But about 19 out of 20 attempts to connect to any thing on the
internet are getting hijacked to a Chinese Language version of Yahoo.
Obviously what I have isnâ??t working.
I have encountered some major problems from just blindly trying out these
sort of downloads (More difficult to get them off the computer than a virus)
If some one has experience with a legitimate program that works better than
what I have, I would appreciate their recommendation.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Slow launch of applicationsClean install of Windows XP Home Edition.
Clicking on a document (e.g. a Word document, or Excel
document) launches the application, but it takes over 30
seconds! Same with clicking on a link from Outlook, or

the Start menu.
Launching an application by clicking on its icon works
fine. Opening a document from within an application

Anyone know what's up?

- Windows XP Hardware >> Pioneer DVD-Rom And LG CD ReWriter Problem Please Help!!!For about 2 years I have had this PC with XP home
edition. It has a Pioneer DVD-ROM (PIONEER DVD 113) and
an LG CD ReWriter (HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8160B) both have
worked perfectly. Yesterday I reinstalled XP and it
picked up all of the devices perfectly. Today neither of
the drives are appearing in my computer or WMP. I tried
reinstalling the drivers for them several times using the
Device Manager. I get the same problem everytime. I Get
the following message:
"Windows cannot load the device driver for this
hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code
39)"
What am I supposed to do? I have looked for the drivers
for both drives on the web and have downloaded them and
installed them. No matter what I do nothing helps. Does
any one have anything that can help me! Could you E-Mail
me at this Address please. Thanks For Your Help!
