- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Auto LogonI recently did a clean install of WinXP on a new hard drive with one user,
myself. It logged on automatically but, as I am populating it with software,
it has stopped logging on automatically. I suspect something called Genie
Backup Manager and have removed it but to no avail.
I download TweakUI to set the AutoLogon and it works once but not the second
time I boot up. I then sussed that TweakUI altered the setting in the
Registry at: HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\WinLogon\AutoAdminLogon from 0 to 1.
I tried this manually and it worked once but not subsequently. It seems that
the problem is that something is not letting the changes to the registry be
saved so they are lost when I shut down. I also noticed that I can no longer
sort the Start/Programmes list on the sub-menu.
Any ideas what is upsetting the registry or how I can force the changes to
be saved or what I can do to find out what is causing the problem?

- Windows XP >> How to Disable Task Bar Pop Up BalloonsThis is probably something simple but I can't figure out how to make windows
stop giving me all these messages when things happen on my pc. I'm not
talking about pop ups that come from internet but the little balloons that
pop up in my sys tray telling me that items are hidden and things like that.
Can anyone give me a clue? Thanks in advance

- Windows XP Hardware >> No USB port option for adding a printerMy Lexmark z25 cannot be installed for some reason. When I
plug the USB cable into the port, Windows XP (sp1 with USB
updates) detects it as 'inkjet color printer' but the
software included cannot detect the printer. I tried to
add the printer manually through windows, but when it asks
me to select a port, no USB port is available (only LPT,
COM and FILE ports are available) Is there a USB update
that I need? All my other USB devices work properly
(wireless keyboard and mouse, webcam, DV recorder link,
however I believe all of these are plug and play, where
the printer is not) Any help would be most appreciated.

- Windows XP Setup >> problems with viewing items on webpagesHi. I am needing some help in trouble shooting a problem
that no one has been able to shed light on. I don't know
what newsgroup to pick so I hope this one is ok. Over
the past month, I have suddenly noticed that alot of
webpages I try to visit, including my own home page have
a red small "X" in the spot where I believe a picture,
caption, heading, ect should be. I have no idea why this
has suddenly happened as prior to July, I had no problem
viewing anything. I wonder if I have a plug in problem
or something. I noticed that this only happens on some
pages as on others, the graphics are fine. Why would
this have suddenly occurred and how can I correct it?
This is not inpart to video or anything, just your basic
data from web page to webpage. Thank you.

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> Since auto update installed CD Max, files won't save ... :>(MM 2.0.3312.0
Windows XP Pro 2002, SP2
Pentium 4 / 3-GHz
512 MB RAM
40-GB available HDD
I've used MM for some time, on files up to 100 MB, without problems, until
Windows auto update installed the CD Max patch. Since then, any file over 5
MB
goes into an infinite wait when saving to computer. The panel displays a
hard drive file definition to save into, but a top line message says, e.g.,
... preparing to save file to CD ROM - 9743286 estimated mins to save.
I uninstalled the CD MAX application in Control Panel / Add-Remove ...,
which completed normally per messages. After a reboot, the CD-Max logo still
appeared in the Save Movie panel, and the preceding CD-RoM save message still
appears in MM.
Any assistance appreciated. I'm in the process of converting family movies
for our children, and want to finish before the family reunion in August. If
MM can't be fixed in a timely manner, what other commercial software package
would do the trick, to enable me to finish. I'm AV-challenged, so simple
apps are good ... :>)
Thanks ... EZ

- Windows XP >> Xp professional ,administratorI have been using the 'Administrato'r as the User Account since installing
the program. The program has now decided not to allow me to copy anything to
CD with out the approval of the 'Administrator'. Odd because there were no
User Accounts set up. I have now set up a user account, but now I carn't find
my data/documents/emails which I created for the last year under
'Administrator'.
How do I access the information previously saved under 'Administrator
Account'?
How do I set up the Account to allow me to copy to CDs without Administrator
approval?

- Windows XP >> Windows Compatability Wizard buttons blankI'm trying to install AncestryView on Windows XP (all the latest patches and
updates), which requires the Windows Compatability Wizard. When I open the
wizard, however, the three buttons at the bottom are blank. If I click the
third button, it cancels the wizard, but the other two don't do anything at
all. I even tried disabling the virus program (MacAffee) and firewall to see
if that was the problem, but it didn't work.
Any thoughts?
Thanks!

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Mysterious system shutdownMy daughter's laptop computer, running Win XP home, shuts
down abrubtly, no error message, nothing, periodically.
It occurs whether the system is on battery or ac power.
I have recently gone through a lengthy process of virus
removal with a helpful techie on Tech Support Guys, and
all of the virus symptoms seem to have disappeared.
However, when I attempt to run a full system scan using
updated NAV, the system invariably shuts down before the
scan is complete.
Any hints would be appreciated, I know I haven't given
all of the technical details here but if anyone has any
ideas I will elaborate. Thanks to anyone who may be able
to assist in advance...

- Windows XP >> Hackers in my machine?I find that my WinXP, 900mhz P3 is running sluggishly and there is a lot of
disk activity when there doesn't seem like there should be. I also notice
that my network connection (cable modem - ethernet) is constantly sending
packets, about 100 per second, hour after hour. At this moment, after a day
of moderate internet usage, I am up to 10 million sent, 1 million received.
Is this normal, or is it possible that my PC has been hijacked by hackers
for that "porn scheme" I have heard of recently? How can I check for this?
I have spywareblaster installed. What more can I do about it?
Thanks in advance,
Steve

- Windows XP >> Arabic messing up my computerI study both Arabic and Russian and I need these alphabets installed.
However, since I installed Arabic on my computer, it kind of takes over
*everything*. Word goes into Arabic mode (right to left for everything,
including foot notes), song titles in WMP get a mixture of arabic characters
and the weird signs that appear when Cyrillic isn't read properly (ááåa or
something like that).
However, what is now most annoying is that as I installed an offline Russian
dictionary, all the menus are completely messed up *and* the words I try to
look up.
I've tried removing Arabic, but it doesn't change anything.
Pleeeeeeeease someone tell me what to do.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> File Explorer size problemThis happened recently. Everytime I tell Explorer (not IE, but the file Explorer) to maximize, it does not takeup the full screen. It only goes up so high and leaves a gap at the top of the screen about the size of my taskbar. The bottom is off the screen about the same distance. I think the dimensions is probably a registry setting but not sure. It looks like it is maximizing to the right size it is just shifted down on the screen. How do I get it back?

- Windows XP >> Cannot switch between open windows. Help!Sorry for duplication. My original post has
vanished.
Windows XP Home
PIII 448 Mhz
384 mg RAM
When I have multiple windows open, I periodically (about
75% of the time at least) lose the ability to switch
between windows. I can click on the open window button at
the bottom of the screen but it will not switch to the
window I select. Alt-Tab does not work either.
Any suggestions?
Currently the only workaround is to minimize all windows
and I can then select the one I want successfully.
This is driving me crazy. Thanks for any help.

- Windows XP Support >> Remote Desktop failedI have been using my laptop and a desktop on my LAN to connect using Remote
Desktop(RD) to a third desktop for2 years. I took my laptop on a trip and
used it to check email using my browser on the hotel's LAN. I am using SP2
Firewall on all. On my return, the laptop had some problems. Initially I
couldn't get into files nor print on my third desktop and RD kept telling me
that the machine didn't exist or the ip address is wrong. After several
re-boots, I now can access files and use the remote printer from my laptop
but RD still won't work. Suggestion appreciated.

I test each disc as well as finalize each disc. All playback on both of the

open the dvds I give them or that nothing is there when they open it. Any
suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

- Windows XP Support >> Add/Remove programs problemI posted this a few minutes ago in the wrong place so here goes again. If
this Newsgroup is the wrong place, please let me know.
Running XP Home on a Toshiba Notebook. When machine arrived, all was well.
Spent a period of time adding my programs and deleteing the "sales pitch"
demo programs that they loaded on the hard drive.
Suddenly, when I go to Add/Remove Programs in the control panel, the Sort By
window in Name mode shows only three programs that start with "A", by size
shows only two large programs, and the used ones show a lot more but I don't
know if all are shown.
What happened and how do I fix it?
I called Toshiba support and they first said to reload the operating system
and then said I had a virus. (McAfee full scan showed no viruses.)
Thnaks for any help.

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> Movie cut off on import to MovieMakerHi,
I made a little mpg movie on my Sony Cyber-Shot. It plays fine in WMP for 23
seconds. However, when I import it to MovieMaker, I only get 21.72 seconds.
Unfortunately, I am speaking right through the end, so my last comment gets
cut off.
How do I get the extra second back?
Thanks,

Any help would be greatly appreciated, and if you could
email me personally, that'd be appreciated as well.
