- Windows XP >> Undeletable FilesTrying to find the definitive answers to XP's inability to
delete certain .avi files. Just opening the folder where
they reside causes Explorer to drag and sometimes crash.
Any attempt to delete file is met with the reminder that
it is in use and cannot be deleted. Found several
fixes/workarounds on the web, but am still looking for the
easiest, least invasive fix which will not have undue
affect on anything else.
Any advice will be appreciated.

- Windows XP Support >> Visual lag displaying All ProgramsI have a new installation of Windows XP with SP2 on an AMD Sempron pc
with 1000 MHz FSB and 512 MB RAM. Not much on the system but Office
2003 and some small apps.
When the user clicks on START then ALL PROGRAMS there is a
considerable lag when the program list is displayed. All we get is a
gray box for, say 30 seconds. If we go back into the list within a
minute or two it's immediate but after that the time lag returns.
Any thoughts on what can be causing this?

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Corrupted Favorite Folder In IE6!!!!I accidently deleted the C:\Documents and
Settings\Compaq_Owner\Favorites folder & now I can't even bookmark in
Internet Explorer 6 but when I try to recreate it, the system says its
there even though I don't even see it in the directory no more. I know
its no registry problem because I didn't move the folder to another
place or try to do anything else to it. But I still checked the
registry & everything looks how it should be. I found some site
telling how to recreate it (which I included below) but the answer was
for windows 95 & 98, even though it says the same for XP, the dos
commands don't work except for del & I did that & it says it deletes it
but its still there.
" ( taken from http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/archive/answers3.htm )
Most problems with favorites are caused by a corrupt favorites folder.
Follow the instructions below to create a new one. Remember to export
your favorites first so that you don't lose them:
Shut down all programmes and boot into dos if you are using Windows 95
or 98. If using Windows ME use an appropriate disc to access DOS. Run
the following commands from the windows directory, typically
c:\windows\>
smartdrv
deltree favori~1
Reboot using ctrl, alt, del if using Windows 95 or 98. If using
WindowsME remember to remove the boot floppy.
Windows 2000 users will have to log in as Administrator to be able to
delete the folders in question directly from within Windows Explorer.
Windows XP users will use the same procedure. "
I even did the sfc file checker three times & it didn't catch nothing &
completed with no problem. Internet Explorer 6 works fine except for
the favorites part which I can't add or do anything with the bookmarks.
I even did the repair for Internet Eplorer with the ie.inf file in
system32 but still the same problem. I upgraded to Internet Explorer 7
Beta 3 & still the same thing. Btw, I got windows xp sp2 installed on
my computer & the Compaq Owner the user profile is the main
Administrator Account with no other user profile on my system.
I wanted to know if there is any way to recreate or rebuild the folder
without reinstalling windows?

- Windows XP Network >> Firewall & File Sharing - XP ProI have two XP Pro machines that are hubbed together and
then to RR ISP through a cable modem. Each has pleant of
CPU power and memory.
I have been working on File Sharing bewtween the systems
with the firewall enabled. If I disable the firewall, I
can see the Workgroup and Shared files quickly, but I
wanted to be able to enable the firewall.
I did get this to work by assigning file and print
sharing ports in the Properties on "View Network
Connections", Advanced Tab, Enable Firewall, Setting
Button. But the Workgroup and connections display way too
slow. I wonder if I have things configured properly.
This is what ports I assigned to the Services GUI...
File Sharing TCP Ports 138 & 445 (external & internal)
File Sharing UDP Ports 137, 138 & 445 (external &
internal). I am not sure if all of these ports should
have been assigned.
I also installed the Client for MS Network & Netware and
the File Sharing & Service Advertising Protocol modules
that show up on the General Tab of Local Area.
Ilke I said, I can file share now, but it is so very slow
to bring up these shared connections that I think I may
have something incorrect.
Any ideas? And thanks in advance for your time.

- Windows XP Hardware >> installing a second hard driveI have an HP Pavilion, AMD 2600 with a 120 gig drive. I have another 80 gig I
would like to install just for our art stuff which has filled the main drive.
The tower has the ribbon and space for a second HDD, but I cant get the
computer to recognize it. All instructions I find use a regular XP windows
disc but mine was pre-installed and I only have the silly restore disks. I
have looked thru the minimum bios settings they show and there is nothing in
there to change. I tried cmd-bootcfg.exe, but get "not a valid program". Is
it possible to add the second hdd on this system? or am I stuck until I get a
"real" xp disk? And would that even help with the bios thats here?

- Windows XP >> Missing Files in Slave Drive - HELP!!Hi All,
I set up my old W2K drive on a new machine. I had problems with the
old computer (which has a c: and d: partition). I bought a new
computer and set up the drive as a slave. It's a long story but I had
to format the c: drive on old hard disk. Now that it's set up as a
slave in my new computer (which is running XP Home) I can see all the
folders in what was the old d: partition. Most of the folders are
accessible but the 2 largest folders which I store all my files in are
not!!! I can see the folders but when I click on it, it says "disk is
not formated would you like to format now?" or something like that.
I'm able to access the other folders and files on the slave drive.
However, looking at properties of the slave drive there is 15GB used up
which looks right so I'm still hopefull that my files are there. I
just can't get to it. Please help......
Thanks in advance for your help.

- Windows XP >> Folder sometimes opens full screen instead of window, why?I keep several folders on my desktop for various uses. One is a folder namd "Microsoft". It it are shortcut icons for access to various Miscrosoft programs, Publisher, Word, etc. I have set this folder to open as a window in the miidle of the screen large enough to show all the icons. Auto Arrange is off in View-Arrange Icons. Once or twice a day it opens full screen with Auto Arrange set on in View-Arrange Icons. This happens with other folders as well. I don't care for this mode of operation and would like to stop it.
Any ideas on why it is happening and how to stop it? I'm running XP Home with, I think, all the updates.

- Windows XP Network >> Windows folder cannot be shared, why not?I have two computers side-by-side with an operational network. One is
an older P4 running WinME and one is a brand new P4-3000 running WinXP
Home. I have a need to copy huge amounts of files from the
"C:\Windows" and C:\Program Files" folders of the old comuter to the
same folders in the new computer. Unfortunately the XP system won't
allow me to share these folders, even though I specified from the top
level that all folders are to be shared. Am I doing something wrong?
If not, is there a simple way to copy between the "locked" folders on
these two systems?

Windows XP Hardware >> vgasave and nvidia geforce video card
I can't get Windows to recognize my nvidea geforce2 MX400
video card. Device Manager shows the card can't be found -
in Display - Properties - Advanced - Driver, it shows my
video driver as "Vgasave" along with conflicts with my
Intel AGP drivers. I've installed the latest Intel
motherboard drivers and the latest Nvidia drivers. When I
reboot, Windows finds my nvidia card - but it installs
Vgasave first, and then it reports that it can't install
my nvidia card. Is there some way around this mess???

Windows XP Hardware >> vgasave and nvidia geforce video card
This can occur if the video card drivers where not WHQL certified. It
happened to me! I tried every drivers for my MX 420 but I never got the
card to be recognised. I was then forced to do a repair re-install, which
did fix this problem.
BTW: You need vgasave. vgasave is the standard non-plug and play video
card drvie used in "Safe Mode".

- Windows XP Setup >> Desktop Rollout CD-KeyI am a consultant and I have created my XP Pro image that I would like to
roll out to a client site of about 25 PC's. I am using an unattend file and
RunOnce to install standard apps. I have created the Image using my version
of XP Pro from MSDN (non- Corprate). I leave the CD-KEY open so I can use
the CD-KEY on the indivdual computer that the client has. However when I use
the CD-KEY on the computer that does say (XP PRO) I'm told it is invalid.
Is there a version of XP Pro that I can use (If i have to rebuild my image I
guess I have too) or could I take all of my clients CD-Keys and consolidate
to ONE XP Pro Cd-Key for the orginization? Does Microsoft do that (Free of
charge?)
Thank you.

- Windows XP Security >> Supid question, help though!Hi, I need to know something really simple, so simple I can't find an answer
anywhere as of course everyone knows this but me! ;-) How do I "browse" to a
file or folder in the command prompt window? That is my question. I am
learning scripting, and while I am able to double click and get a dialog box
with the script in it, I am unable to open the scrip in the command prompt as
it keeps telling me "Unable to locate file". The file is right there in the
My Docements folder in a sub-folder called My Scrips. The command prompt has
C:\Documents and Settings\User Name then the curser blinks. I tried putting
My Documents at the curser point, but it returned an "invalid command" My not
recongnized as an internal command.
I know this is stupid, but somebody please tell me how to do this right?
Thanks very much,

- Windows XP Network >> IE6 & SIC can't browse from clientI have a problem....
IE is unable to browse the internet. I'm running 2 computers on winXP with a shared 256 adsl connection. I am able to ping any server I want, I can play my online game on both computers at the same time(Everquest =) ), and Yahoo! messenger works on both computers at the same time.I downloaded a fullversion svp for IE6 and installed it, without that making any difference, and I just downloaded the network-version of xpsvcp1 so I could install it on the computer w/o browser, but it didn't help. Is there any secret trick to make IE6 aware of the connection? I forgot to mention, it doesn't matter if I set the settings, or they are set on auto....
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you very much

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Limit RAMHello
I just upgraded to XP from W98se. I have 512 meg of RAM

I used to do this in W98se with the line:

This doesn't give the same result in XP.
Any Ideas?

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Service Pack 2I have my computer download windows updates
automatically. However, I now find that it has
downloaded service pack 2. I had service pack 2
installed and tried it for a few weeks, and then I took
it off my computer. It causes seemed to cause packet
loss which interferes with some programs that I run on
the internet. I tie it to this program because I had no
problems with it, installed service pack 2 and started
having problems. I had these problems for about 2 weeks,
and they went away when I uninstalled the program.
So, my question is, where are the downloaded updates
stored so that I can delete them? And is there any way
to not download service pack 2 for installation if you
use the automatic download feature?
Thanks for your help.

- Windows XP Security >> Please advise on re-installation.Hi,
I run WinXP SP2 on a 32 bit system. The computer is running quite well,
and I have images of my main drive which holds the System partition, on
another hard drive.
I now propose to upgrade to a 64 bit system and have purchased the
necessary components.
Will you please tell me what is the best practice these days:-
Should I simply install my present main drive onto the new motherboard
and hope that everything will run as before?
Or should I Install a new clean hard drive onto the new motherboard, and
use software to transfer all the partitions and files from the present
main drive onto the new drive?
Or should I do a clean re-install of everything onto the new hard drive,
on the new motherboard?
Your advice would be much appreciated, especially if you could give
brief reasons for your recommendations.
Royston.
