- Windows XP Support >> Windows delayed write failed messageHello
I have a 1 year old machine with new disks. I bootup Windows on a C: drive
and I hold my data on a 400GB SATA hard drive - E: drive.
Sometimes when I boot my PC it is really slow and I get these messages:
Windows was unable to save all the data for the file E:\$Mft. The data has
been lost. The error may be caused by a failure in your computer hardware
or network connection. Please try to save the file elsewhere.
When this happened this morning I could see my E: drive in explorer but
could not copy files to another drive. I rebooted and all was OK!
This is a brand new hard drive. Is my hard drive really faulty?

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> Import of AVI filesSince update to service pack 2 unable to import AVI files fom networked
computer. Error Message is
"-- could not be imported. The selected file is not valid or is corrupted."
It used to work fine! The strange thing is that I can copy and paste the
file to the Host computer, import it from there and it works fine. I do not
think that the avi files are corrupt as they play fine on each individual
computer. Could it be the network firewall which has been put on by the
service pack 2 update? Any ideas? Thanks for any help that maybe forthcoming.

- Windows XP Update >> No Updates for XP SP2 since June?I've have automatic updates turned on since Feb 05 but checked for udates
using the site today and after installing the 'Genuine Advantage' software
and that checking out fine it says there are no critical/security updates.
However in update history the last update was dowloaded (automatically) on
16 June 05 - Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer for Windows XP
Service Pack 2 (KB883939).
Have there been no updates since then? They were usually at least a couple
each month. I've checked for hidden updates and there are none there. Does
anyone know if there have been any and if so why haven't they been dowloaded.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Dropped network connectionsThis one is puzzling to me: I have XP Pro logged into a
domain, with drive letters mapped to our file server,
configured through a logon script. On a couple of our
computers, access to the server (the mapped drive) is
lost and nothing from that drive can be accessed.
However, the connection is restored within 15 minutes or
so on its own.
Does this sound familiar to anyone?

that only one shows at a time. This is very frustrating because I would like

- Windows XP >> mouse copy/pastexp, having folder with 150 text files, displayed in win explorer right pane.
wanting to copy them all.
select first, shift-rightclick last to select whole range. but when
right-clicking on selection to make pop-up for copy, nothing happens.
the same time, pressing ctrl-a, ctrl-c on [same as above] selected right
pane, and later ctrl-v on destination folder make copy/past.
is my win xp config wrong since i may not have right click pop-up on
selected 150 files, while on ther same time keyboard shortcuts work as
expected? gui copy of small number of files still works with mouse as
expected.
does it mean that keyboard shortcuts are more powerfull than gui mouse
copy/paste?
[not to say that copying from cmd prompt "copy *.txt newfolder" also work
for unlimited number of files]
any comment?

- Windows XP Hardware >> Why does XP assign a number when updating device hardware?I updated my Wi-Fi adapter driver and client utility in Windows XP. After
uninstalling the old driver and client utility and rebooting my system, I
then installed the updated driver and client utility. I had to do this
twice because my system hung on bootup. The update works great and I don't
have any problems, so my question is related only to the XP operating
system.
Windows XP assigned a number after the hardware adapter, for example, before
I performed the hardware driver update, my Wi-Fi adapter was listed in the
device manager as "Atheros AR5001X+ Wireless Network Adapter" but after the
update it is listed as "Atheros AR5001X+ Wireless Network Adapter #3"
This is not the only case where XP has done this. It also listed my webcam
adapter with a "#2" at the end of the device name. It seems that any time I
reinstall or update a driver, XP assigns the device hardware a sequential
number.
Thanks for your windows expertise for this question.

- Windows XP Support >> System RestoreI've experienced a number of problems on my computer (NAV not loading
correctly, other programs missing files, etc.). Therefore, I decided to
restore my system to the previous restore point (which was Sunday,
thankfully). However, I cannot access the System Restore dialog. When I
click on Control Panel>Performance & Maintenance>System Restore (in the
upper left column), nothing happens. I've also tried to access system
restore through the "Help & Support" function on the start menu, but nothing
happens then either. I've run Ad-Aware and Spybot on my computer (have been
installed for about a year, not after I realized I had a problem), but I
don't receive any indications that I've got a problem. Most other programs
seem to be operating as they should. What should I do?

- Windows XP Network >> Annoying difference between "Map Network Drive" and "Net Use"Greetings,
I'm using VPN to get to a server at my office; Windows 2000 server (which I
manage) and Windows XP Home on the laptop. And I'm having the following
curious problem.
If I use "Map Network Drive" in My Computer, everything works fine. For
instance, if I map U: to \\servername\users\mc, all is well.
If I use "net use u: \\servername\users\mc" I usually get an error 53
(network path not found).
Further... as soon as I have done *one* Map Network Drive, I can *then* do
as many "net use" operations as I want (to map additional drives).
And if, without doing a Map Network Drive, I simply wait a few minutes after
connecting, then "net use" will often work.
Since "Map Network Drive" and "Net Use" are supposed to be identical, what's
going on here?
I'd like to use "Net Use" in a script that is executed automatically upon
connecting (via CMAK). That's how I discovered the problem. The
MapNetworkDrive operation in VBSCRIPT, which I also tried, apparently has
the same problem as "Net Use."
More about it:
- When I'm unable to use Net Use, I'm also unable to open paths such as
\\servername\blah\blah in a window or with Run. However, once I've done a
successful Map Network Drive, they work.
- Putting the IP address in place of servername doesn't help. Nor does
using the fully qualified path for it.
The bottom line:
- What is this superpower that "Map Network Drive" has, and how can I make
it happen automatically?
I'm guessing it has something to do with WINS or browsing.
Thanks to anyone who can shed light on this! You'll be advancing the cause
of science.

- Windows XP Update >> ActiveX not functions after Windows UpdateHi All,
My clients complaint that recently they can't view a button (which is
developed using ActiveX control) in their website which was developed
by me using asp. The problem doesn't exist before, after i checked, i
found that it happened after their Windows automatically updates on 18
of August.
I have used system restore to restore their OS back to the date before
the updates, and the problem doesn't exist. However, my clients didn't
wish to accept this solution.
Is there any problems on the security updates? Have anyone know any
solutions for this?
I really need helps on this...
Thanks and Regards,

- Windows XP >> Internet Connection OK, Some programs can't connectHello all,
OK - I'm stumped. Maybe someone out there has seen this and can help
me.
I have a friend with a laptop with WinXP Pro/Corp SP2. Connecting to
the internet via Comcast HSI is fine. IE works, he is able to check his
email, he can download programs, etc.
However, he can't connect to the internet via iTunes, WeatherBug, or
even install the "Comcast Toolbar" for IE. Those are the 3 things he's
tried.
I figured it was most likely a software firewall problem, so we tried
exiting it completely. No change.
I had him install, run, update AdAware - all of these worked - and
AdAware had no problem connecting to the internet. We ran a scan, took
off a bunch of SpyWare/Malware, rebooted, and still no change.
His laptop was pre-loaded with a separate admin ID, we tried the same
thing from the admin ID and it didn't work there either... so its not a
user rights problem.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
D
