- Windows XP Hardware >> network card disabled by unknown software problemHello,
On July 30 the network card of my laptop suddenly did not function anymore.
Reinstalling the drivers did not help. The supplier of my laptop gave me a
new motherboard, with built in network card, but that didn't fix it. They
said it was a software problem and that I needed to reïnstall Windows XP and
build up my whole configuration again. Then I reïnstalled the latest system
recovery point from before the problem started (June 27) and that did fix
it! No problems anymore.
Two weeks ago again my network card stopped functioning. What I can remember
is that I had a software crash while I was travelling (MS Word with MS Visio
openend for a included diagram did not come back from hibernate). When I
came home my network card did not function. I went back to the latest system
recovery point, but that did not help. Then I tried a system recovery point
before that, but to no avail...
Does anyone have any idea how I can fix this without a complete reïnstall of
Windows XP and all the software?
My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite A50. The network card is an Intel(R)
PRO/100 VE.
Thanks for any suggestions,
regards,
Henk Koning

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> browser shutdownsI've been having a lot of browser shutdowns both IE and
Netscape and I don't know why. I've also noticed that my
system time is off. If the battery that's supposed to
keep that current is losing power can it also cause these
shutdowns? Thanks.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Volume Controlaccidentally removed some audio device using Add or
Remove Programs in Control Panel. When I try to play some
audio, I get a message saying there are no audio mixer
devices available. "To install mixer devices," it
says, "go to Control Panel, click Printers and Other
Hardware, and then click Add Hardware." I tried this and
it says all the audio devices from the list it gives are
working properly, and nothing comes up when I search for
hardware.
How can I fix this?

- Windows XP Setup >> Windows x64 UpgradeI qualify for the upgrade and would like to order it in the good faith that
appropriate 64-bit drivers will eventually be available for my hardware, but
I do not want to commit myself to the upgrade in case they do not. If I
order the upgrade and decide not to use it, will I be allowed to continue to
use my current Windows XP Pro license or will its validity be negated once I
order the upgrade? If the original license remains valid until I activate
the Windows x64 license, I would be very happy to order the upgrade.

- Windows XP Setup >> Registry setting to Auto-Arrange Desktop Icons in XPHi All,
I am currently working on an unattended installation of Windows XP, and was
wondering if anyone knows how to automaticcally set the desktop items to
auto-arrange without having to write an AutoIT or ScriptIT script to enable
the option.
I know that this could be done under the registry change shown below for
Windows 2000 Pro, however this does not work for Windows XP
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DeskVi
ew]
"Settings"=hex:01,00,00,00,21,02,00,00,
Any info, no matter how small it seems, would be appreciated!

am unable to control it using the pad and it can move haphazardly accross the

which seems to stabilise the mouse.

- Windows XP Network >> want to GET RID of firewallHey guys, my problem is that I want to get rid of whatever is causing my
computer to act like it's firewalled.
I'm currently studying in Japan and have ADSL in the dorms. It seemed to be
firewalled, but no one else I asked really knew much about it, so I just kind
of accepted it and moved on. But recently one of my friends in Tokyo has
gotten a new internet connection, which her computer works perfectly on and
gets amazing speed. But when I connect, it still seems I am firewalled. Using
PC Flank's scanner (pcflank.com) all my ports are stealthed while hers are
closed.
I am not concerned with security, and just want to get rid of whatever is
causing this. I am using XP Professional and do not have SP2. I have XP's
built in firewall turned off on all my network connections. I have had Norton
Systemworks 2005 installed, but have uninstalled it.. not sure if there could
be lingering settings from that. I have gone into the registry but don't know
what to look for...
Anyways I have done all I can think of. Even gone through and checked every
setting I can find and matched it with the working computer. It's very
frustrating... PLEASE help!

Windows XP MovieMaker >> Preview image is scrambled while recording
When capturing video using Movie Maker 2 I get scrambled multiple images of
the incoming video on the preview window. Anyone else have this problem? Any
solutions?
I am using the Avermedia EZ DVD Maker PCI capture card with a VHS-C

capture but the preview doesn't work.
Any help would be appreciated.

Any help will be so much appreciated, I have no clue as to how to choose components to remove manually! Thank you in advance for any help you may be able to offer.

I reinstall Windows XP [Home].
However having re-registered [using my original name and
password], I cannot gain access to my original personal
files [all my data files, within Documents and Settings].

Can you please provide assistance with this problem?

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> NTFS metadata/$Secure:$SDS fragmentationI just wanted to see if anyone out there knows whether security
descriptor fragmentation is a problem. PerfectDisk reports
fragmentation in the $Secure:$SDS datastream as an issue. It seems to
me that this datastream is not likely to be accessed contiguously, so
it should be benign. Is that true?
I would assume that fragmentation of the indexes ($Secure:$SDH and
$Secure:$SDI) is much more of an issue.
Does anyone have the inside scoop on whether fragmentation of the main
data store matters?
Thanks for your help.

If I create a primary partition (15GB) for the OS and an extended partition

will I run into any problems? I plan to move the existing OS over to the new
drive using Ghost.

through "My network Places" get to the file shares on the

this a local security issue or a policy issue. The other

machines have the same settings. HELP
