- Windows XP Security >> MsconfigI have two questions regarding the System Configuration
Utility. Specifically, the Startup tab.
1. Is the item "sys" with the command "regedit /s
c:/windows..." a vital part of windows or is it possibly
spyware or something of that sort? Bottom line: can I
disable it from loading at startup?
2. I have 2 items that have no name & no command
associated with them, only a location. Can I disable
them from loading at startup?
Please help!

- Windows XP >> Updating BIOS in Win XP-activation security wont allowLast year I tried to install the latest BIOS update for
my ASUS A7V8X board, but XP thought I was trying to steal
XP and the activation system would not allow boot up. So
I reinstalled my old BIOS and everything worked fine. I
communicated with MSFT and they denied my problem
existed, yet it's clear that the original version of XP
would not allow certain hardware or BIOS updates, e.g. if
you replace too much hardware at once, XP assumes it's
being bootlegged. Does anybody know if MSFT has fixed
this problem in XP, or will I need to try a BIOS update
again to see if they have??????

- Windows XP >> Missing TabsI'm running XP Pro with all current updates. I was reading about the built
in firewall and how to disable it if I had a router etc. Anyway, control
panel, network connections, properties and all I have is the general tab. I
believe that there should be two more, one being advanced. Any ideas or help
would be appreciated

- Windows XP Network >> 1-2 minute dealy on startupI have noticed many other posts and thought I would add
mine for some feedback.
Clean installation of Windows XP. Install SP1.
Computer will reach the desktop and load then hangs for 1-
2 minutes. The hard drive does not respond at all in that
time.
Unable to launch programs during this time.
It will resume the load and finish within 5-10 seconds.
Nothing running in Startup.
No virus or Spyware involved. Something in SP1 mkaes it
hang during startup.
I have also, performed clean installation, installed all
programs including AV, computer will boot normally
multiple times and connect to the internet. Perfect.
Installed SP1 again, computer hangs at boot.
If network cable is plugged in, it will hang. If not
computer will not. No mapped drives.
I have captured SVCHOST trying to connect to
239.255.255.250 Port 1900
&
255.255.255.255 DHCP
I have already checked this and the registry entry is
already correct.

exception (isn't there always one exception?!). I can

- Windows XP Support >> Accessing network drivesThis is a follow on question from a previous post of mine.
I have a network of 2 laptops and a desktop, linked with a Linksys ADSL
Router by hardwire.
I want to install an application on each machine (Act6) with the database
and common files being accessible to all three machines. Can I plug in a
network hard drive to my router and put the database files on there so that
all three machines will access them or do I need to install a server? One
laptop and the desktop run XP but the other laptop runs W2000.
Thanks
Tony

Windows XP Perform Maintain >> osmim.dll
When running Spyguard I get a message that osmim.dll protocol key #1
is missing. Could that be why certain internet pages will not load?

Windows XP Perform Maintain >> osmim.dll
Yes! osimim.ddl is an adware file. It sounds like maybe
you scanned your system for Spyware/Adware and that
program removed the file and so now an error is
generating as a result. If you didn't scan your system,
you need to. Then if you still need help, you should
probably submit your message at a spyware forum.

- Windows XP Network >> Cannot access some files in shared folderMy wife's computer and my computer are connected via our LAN router (and thence
to the Internet). Her computer is running XP Home and mine XP Professional. I
set up a shared folder on my computer so that she could store some files there
and free up some disk space.
She can transfer files through the LAN to the shared folder on my computer. She
also can read these files OK and copy them back to her computer.
I downloaded a couple of files from the Internet into this directory. The files
are .zip archives. I can read these files OK, but she can not access them
through the LAN. Any attempt to copy one of these files to her computer or to
open a .zip file by double-clicking results in the error message:
"Access to <file-path\file-name> is denied.
I created a small .txt file in this folder, and she was able to access the .txt
file. So her ability to access a file doesn't depend on who put it there.
On my computer, in Windows Explorer, when I select this folder and click on the
menu item Tools | Folder Options and select the View tab, the advanced setting
"Use simple file sharing" is checked. Shouldn't this setting let her access
anything in the shared folder.
What is wrong?

- Windows XP Network >> ICS and DHCP problems in Sp2Hello
I have a desktop with 3 network connections (RJ45, 1394 and WIFI) bridged
together with a manually assigned IP of 192.168.0.1
The laptop has 3 network connections bridged together with an IP of
192.168.0.3 (manual) and the network is running fine.
When I try to share the DSL connection on the desktop (modem is USB, not
RJ45) the (stupid) system tells me it must use Ip of 192.168.0.1 on the
"gateway" (which is the ALREADY MANUALLY entered adress), upon reboot the
IP is set automatically but instead of getting 192.168.0.1 I get 0.0.0.0
and of course nothing is working.
I can try to "repair" as many times as I want I get an error saying that
the system was unable to refresh my IP adress and i should contact the
network administrator.
Maybe it is a service of some sort that is not stared but all the
"obvious" ones are started so I'll be happy to get your ideas and tips on
this one (list of necessary services in case I've missed one).
I have thought that maybe if I could tell him to share the remote access
without having to go through the wizard would help, is there a registry
key telling him that yes this connection is shared but no don't run your
stupid wizard which is only messing things up, can't you share an internet
connection without having to have your IP using DHCP ? What if you HAVE to
have your "gateway" use a different IP than 192.168.0.1 ?
Thanks a lot

- Windows XP >> HELPWhen I finish working on Windows XP we generally disconnect from the
broadband internet. Unfortunately whether we log off or stay logged on as
one of our family users after a while the computer completely locks and won't
do anything, can't even CNTL-ALT-DELETE. This has nothing to do with it
automatically going to standby mode after half an hour, it seems to lock
earlier than that. Any help would be appreciated.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Erasing/cleaning my hard driveAfter having troubles that I couldn't resolve, I resigned to reinstalling my
OS (Windows XP) figuring to start over with my PC. I thought that by
reinstalling Windows XP, I'd be erasing (or reformatting) my hard drive.
Instead, I've got the OS reinstalled with files from before still on the hard
drive.
I have all the data and software I need backed up and want to start with a
'clean slate'. How do I go about erasing the hard drive and starting fresh?

- Windows XP >> Trouble accessing 'programs' from 'start'Windows XP sp2
When I left click "start" then left click 'programs' nothing opens.
If I right click programs I can see all the short cuts to the programs I
had for the past year or two.
Something happened to the shortcut from "start' to 'programs'
Anyone have any idea how to get back my path to programs.
Hope the explanation is precise enough.

- Windows XP Setup >> Start-up DelayAs windows loads something with 'Promulgate Universal'
goes wrong.
When I click any user account icon to begin I get 2 boxes
(like alert boxes) which say;
"Unhandled exception:
c0000005
At address: 100016b8"
...which I have to click the 'OK' button before my system
lets me proceed...
Then another box saying;
"PromulGate Universal has encountered a problem and
neeeds to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. If
you were working on something, the information you were
working on might be lost.
Please tell Microsoft about tjis problem. We have created
an error report that you can send us. We will treat this
report as confidential and anonymous.
To see what information this error report contains click
here...."
...then I have to click 1 of 2 buttons that read 'Send
Error Report' or 'Don't Send' to proceed with anything.
For the first few months of this I clicked 'Send Error
Report' in hopes of getting help or a reply from
Microsoft. This, in turn caused my machine to go online-
etc...many times when I intended to just work offline.
Well, as far as my reporting being treated as anonymous,
I surely believe them.....needles to say I never recieved
any reply from Microsoft and have clicked 'Don't Send'
for about 5-6 months now. I believe I've even ran
the 'restore' disks process since then without that
fixing itself. big hassle.....
Do I need to go into the 'BIOS'? If anyone can help,
please send me an 'email' about this........

- Windows XP >> Backup applicationsHello,
Is there any backup applications that backup, not only files, but registry
entries (e.g. Outlook Express' rules), etc.? It would be great to have this
as an all-in-one product which lets you select folders and files
specifically for backing up plus backing up from one drive to the other and
back the other way (almost like syncing).
