"Firewall should allow HTTP connections for GET, PUT, and POST."
That's as far as the software's tech info goes, and I have no clue what GET,

- Windows XP Network >> How many simultaneous connections to a server??I have a problem in my office network. It is comprised of XP computers.
Currently, we do not have a "central" server to act as a hub and we have a
problem with one computer being accessed too much simultaneously. The
computer has XP Home on it and only 5 people can access it at one time. I
have to set up a server operating system so that more people can access the
needed files all at the same time. I want to know how many simultaneous
connections can be made to a server operating system. Is it limitless? Or
is there a restriction?

- Windows XP Security >> L2TP/IPSEC problem, followed test lab think its a certificateHi,
I have set up 5 fresh windows 2003 boxes and have followed
the VPN lab document as close as possible.
I am trying to get a test lab up and running and have run
into into a few major problems and I have limited time
left to demo this to my business and a vocal Unix crowd.
I am using the Microsoft article :
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?
url=/technet/prodtechnol/windowsserver2003/deploy/confeat/r
motevpn.asp
with a future hope of swapping the WinXP box for a PDA
running Mobile 2003 with a wireless network being the
10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.2.
But of course I need to get the WinXP CLIENT1 working
first.
After I got the PPTP scenario working (very fast) I ran
into a show stopper with the L2TP scenario in the above
mentioned document.
I end up with an error of: 789 and then after auto
reconnect the error goes to 792.
I followed the steps in the L2TP document and everything
seemed to work fine until of course I tried to connect to
the L2TP connection via the WinXP CLIENT1 box. The steps
I followed were:
1.) Into the DC and configured the automatic certificate
for a computer
2.) Then I did the gpudate on both the DC and VPN box. I
didn't do it on the IAS box ?
3.) I then logged the client into the intranet domain
network under the VPNUser. No problems, I could ping all
the 172.16.0.X boxes and resolve their hostname.domain and
I also checked that the certificate was loaded into
Certificates -> Personal -> Certificate and it was. A
certificate with the clienthostname.domain. I opened up
the certicate and reviewed it properties and there seemed
to be no problems.
4.) I then shutdown the CLIENT1 (XP box) and connected the
WinXP box back to the isolated Internet hub connection.
5.) Logged in again under VPNuser. This time the log on
took forever. Two Event Viewer application errors were
then generated. I quickly checked that I could ping the
VPN server (VPN1) at 10.0.0.2 and I could. It was
successful and the CLIENT1 had now taken on the 10.0.0.1
IP address.
The first of these application errors said:
Windows cannot obtain the domain controller name for your
computer network. (The specified domain either does not
exist or could not be contacted) Group Policy process is
aborted.
The second application error message (genertaed approx 1
min afterwards) said:
Automatic certificate enrollment for Local System failed
to contact the active directory. The specified domain
either does not exist or could not be contacted.
Enrollment will not be performed.
I thought both of these were fine as I wasn't connected
onto the intranet yet for the active directory links to be
performed ???
Anyway, then I setup the L2TP connection as it says in the
doco. I tried it with both mulitnode and LCP turned off
and on, rebooting and anything else etc.. etc..
The error I consistenly get is:
Connecting to 10.0.0.2
Error 789 : The L2TP connection failed bacause the
security layer encountered a processing error during
initial negotiations with the remote computer.
Then when it auto redials it gives me the next error:
Error 792:
The L2TP connection attempt failed because security
negotiation timed out.
LASTLY, I thought I would try the good ol PPTP connection
to see if it was still working and it was. The PPTP
connection was successful adn I could still access the web
site and c:\ on the iis1 box.
I have read some of the news items and found Tom's site
and book a must purchase for me (Does it use WIndows 2003
in the book ?)
Anyway, is my problem that I don't have a Root Certificate
and that I only have a Private one ?
Not sure where I get the the Root Certificate from and
where to put it ? (If this is my problem ??)
Please help me get this demo up and running, I'm so close.
Cheers
Steve

Windows XP >> Dual boot
I have a currently business program which only works in DOS which Win98SE
can do. Is it possible to add a second hard drive with a different OS
(win98se) and be able to choose which one to load at startup? This way I
wouldn't have to reformat my current drive to partition it, which is running
WinXP, and have to start over. Any thoughts?

Yes, it's possible but not at all straightforward. A much
simpler method would require you to install Microsoft's
free Virtual PC
(http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtualpc/default.mspx).
You could then install Win98 in the virtual PC session and
switch freely fron WinXP to Win98 without having to
reboot the machine each time.

If you don't mind the cost of a 2nd HD and if you're not
afraid to make a manual setting in the BIOS, this is very
easy to do. Just install the new OS on the 2nd HD while
the first HD is disconnected. Then, with both HDs
connected, you can switch between them by entering the
BIOS at startup (you User's Manual will tell you how),
and putting the other HD at the head of the Hard Drive Boot
Order. The Hard Drive Boot Order (*not* the Device Boot
Order!) prioritises the HDs to determine which one gets
control at boot time.

Both ideas sound good. Tim, your idea is what I thought may work, I just
wasn't sure. The Virtual PC 2007 may be a simpler way, but after looking at
the web pages about it, I can't determine if this is free, and If not, I
can't find a cost for it. I guess I'll download the demo and see what
happens. Thanks.

Virtual PC is a free download. Since you're still running Win98SE,
your PC may be elderly, and a virtual machine may run a bit slowly
on it. I would be interested in hearing your impressions of the running
of a business program on a virtual machine using Virtual PC. Would
you also include the model and speed of your CPU?

I would expect that the faster CPU *and* a big buncha RAM
would make a noticeable difference for a virtual machine. It
will be interesting to hear what you find.

Windows XP >> Dual boot
Well, I installed the Virtual PC. It works OK. I installed Win98SE on it
and proceeded to load my DOS based business program. It doesn't work...
Screen goes blank. I even tried a program called MOSLO, that slows the cpu
speed, I had to do that on my other PC and it worked great. I tried an old
version of Quicken, and it did some weird things, like not finding files,
etc. My conclusion is that it's useless, unless you may have a need to run
a PC system on a MAC, which seems to be its primary use. I uninstalled it,
but there are a few files left on the HD that I can't remove, they're just
taking up space. No big deal with a 160 GigHD. I'm going to try the second
HD idea. Thanks for all your input. Stu

Windows XP >> Dual boot
Thanks for the feedback. I guess there's no such thing as perfect
emulation. A variation on the "2nd HD" is to use a "mobile rack"
such as those made by Kingwin:
http://www.kingwin.com/mobileracks.asp
There are models for PATA IDE and for SATA IDE.
You can just slide in the tray containing the HD with the desired
OS on it. Kingwin also sells the extra trays. The set goes for
around $25 on-line, and extra trays go for around $17 to $20
(do a search at Nextag or Pricewatch or Pricegrabber using
"Kingwin" and the model no.) Doing this, the HD that's not
being used is immune to virus activity stemming from the HD
that *is* being used. I have the model with the fan in the
floor of the tray, and it keeps the HD very cool.
Another way to do the same thing is to control the power to the
HDs with a DPST micro-toggle switch. To avoid the situation
where a "dead" HD is on the end position of a PATA IDE cable
while a "live" HD is at the mid-position, I have one HD at each
end position of two cables of a PCI IDE controller card, and the
other IDE peripherals on the motherboard controller. By cutting
the power connection to a HD (while the system is powered OFF),
I can effectively remove that HD from the system, and with no need
to diddle in the BIOS, that HD will be invisible when the other HD
is automatically chosen to boot its OS.

Western Digital drives now come with a utility to transfer all settings
from the old boot drive, to the new drive. I have already successfully transfered
all of the contents of the old to the new, but the computer refuses to boot from

Steps taken so far.
1. Installed new 160Gb drive on controller card as master, temp drive letter assignement of I: (have 8 devices already attached, 2 SCSI HDD, 3 EIDE HDD,
1 SCSI CD-ROM, and 2 EIDE DVD-R's) Had to remove the extra SCSI drive for the power connector.
2. Partitioned, and formatted new drive using Western Digital drive software, and transfered all data from old boot drive to new.
3. Shut down system, removed boot drive SCSI ID 0. Re-attached old SCSI D: drive
4. Booted system and entered BIOS, changed boot options from SCSI to EIDE
saved/exited, rebooted.
System makes it through POST ok, see's all drives including new one at full capacity
(used LBA during format), but when it comes time to load Windows XP home, says system not found.
I have tried various combinations of settings in BIOS boot options to no avail.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
P.S. Also tried DiskCopy v 4, no go at this station.
Thanks again
