- Windows XP >> ISP Freezes Every 5 minutesXP Home, SP2. I've recently loaded AOL to a newer PC. I believe I have all
updates. The PC freezes every 5+ minutes for about 10 seconds, all the time.
It doesn't disconnect, just freezes. The DSL light on the modem flashes at
the same time and I get a Windows message up - Local Network - A cable is
unplugged. I've checked all connections many times.. As it's as regular as
clockwork I suspect some sort of timer involved. AOL have not been able to
help despite numerous suggestions including a hint to 'Disable Idle Timer'
but instructions were for W.98SE and did not seem to apply to XP.
This did not happen on my older PC running W.98SE although I got plenty of
disconnects. Some disconnects on this PC when mouse clicked but not as
frequent. PC has two HDD's and one is probably faulty. AOL loaded on the good
one..

- Windows XP >> Why won't it update itself? All of a sudden my IE6 doesn't seem to have Adobe Flash installed even
though it says it is when I go to the sight and try to install. I have
uninstalled and reinstalled several times, but whenever I go to a sight that
requires Flash it says I do not have it and to install.
I use Firefox sometimes and it works fine for Flash pages on the web.
I checked all the security and that is ok and I am the administrator. What
am I missing here? It used to work just fine.

- Windows XP Hardware >> Using an Iomega External HD with XP and a MacI recently bought an Iomega External HD (100G) drive to use primarily on my
XP systems. It came out of the box formatted FAT32. As I understand it
from
Google Groups, this drive can be plugged into a Mac and used for both
reading and writing to share files between the XP and Mac machines.
Is this correct?

- Windows XP Network >> print sharing with 3 computers and 2 printerskind of a general question here as i'm looking for a concensus. i have 3 computers (all win xp) and 2 usb printers in an office. all are networked via a wired router. printer 1 is connected to comp 1, printer 2 to comp 2 and comp 3 has no printer. when all machines are on, one can choose from any printer via the network. sometimes all machines/people are not present, so you might not be able to access a printer. what would be the best way for ALL machines to access any printer, anytime regardless of who is connected. thanks in advance for any help.

- Windows XP Support >> Windows Explorer won't go to backgroundWhen I move away from Windows Explorer by clicking on another application's

have to click the Minimize button to get it out of the way.
Is there a setting that I need to fix, or is this a bug?

- Windows XP Support >> PC Hangs On Boot UpMy PC is hanging during the boot process. I can get past Windiws XP Logo,
then the screen goes blank and nothing else happens (usually go to the log on
screen).
I know it is a driver / hardware issue as the Automatic Error Reporting
tells me this, BUT, it doesn't tell me which driver or the hardware is
causing the problem.
I know it isn't the memory as I've checked this with the MS memory testing
tool.
Anyone got any suggestions?
Many thanks

- Windows XP Security >> Internet settings via XPwhen I have music playing from the internet such as Yahoo IM with it's
Launchcast or via Media Player, I get asked, "Do you want such and such
program change your settings?"
Prior to me clicking on "No", I checkmark the box next to, "Do not show this
dialog box again". However, this same question pops up I don't know how many
different times, regardless if I'm the administrator or not (I'm the
administrator on one computer system and I'm not the administrator on another
system, and they both have the same behavior).

- Windows XP >> Strange monitor behaviorRunning Win Xp SP2. I replaced my 3 year old 17" LCD monitor with a new 19"
LCD monitor. My computer is 5 years old and uses a NVDIA TNT Model 64/64 Pro
video card.
The old 17" monitor worked fine. The new monitor exhibits a strange problem:
When the computer boots, the name of the video card shows up clearly on the
first screen. On the following screens, when the computer goes through the
self-check routines (B&W) the text is all scrambled, although it boots up
fine. It will let me in the bios if I click on del repeatedly. It will start
Windows in Safe Mode if I click on F8 repeatedly.
IOW, the computer works fine but the first several screens are full of
garbled text. The monitor works flawlessly when I connect it to my wife's
(equally old) computer. Therefore, the problem is not with the monitor but
with the way it interacts with my computer.
Is the problem in my BIOS or in the Windows System?

I know that this is a dual media backup, but the floppy

- Windows XP >> Moving license from Virtual machine to real machineHi,
I am a developer with an MSDN developer license.
My personal computer is using Windows Vista Ultimate and I have been using
Virtual PC to install Windows XP professional.
I now want to install that copy of windows XP onto my laptop.
Of course I will remove it from the Virtual Machine.
But I am sure that when the Laptop will try to register the copy it will
report that the copy has already been registered.
So I can I move from one PC, (Virtual), to a real PC, (Laptop).

- Windows XP >> Windows file missing or corruptMy Brother in-law has an HP Pavilion. Twice now he has
had Windows XP Home Edition refuse to start and his
computer would only display the following
message: "Windows could not start due to following file
missing or corrupt \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM". This
has happened twice in the last three months. Has any one
seen this message before and what is causing the file to
become missing or corrupt? I have had to restore Windows
XP twice so far. We would really appreciate any info.

- Windows XP >> Need Help Removing a Photo ScannerI used to have a Compaq/Lexmark multifunction device on my computer; it has
long since been replaced, software and drivers uninstalled. Gone, but not
completely.
If I go into a program like MS Word, PhotoDraw, etc., which allows me to
insert a photo from a scanner, those programs all display a pop-up window
from which I can choose which scanner I want to insert from, and that old
Compaq A1000 shows up in that list. One particular program I have assumes
only one scanner is installed and attempts to use it. Since the A1000 is
apparently at the top of the list, it gets elected, and of course is not
present so that program will not work.
Anyway, I've worked with HP/Compaq trying to get rid of this with absolutely
no luck. Apparently, there is someplace in windows where programs like this
look to for installed scanner devices info, and that area still contains the
A1000 info.
Does anyone know how I can get rid of it?

- Windows XP Setup >> XP SP2 - computer continously reboots after installAfter installing XP SP2 on a XP Pro machine, it does not
get to the startup screen prior to rebooting again. The
second time it does go to the SafeMode option, and safe
mode is bootable both with and without network support.
I scanned the knowledgebase and found one article
referencing a problem with UMAX scanner drivers - however
I have never had a UMAX scanner on this machine.
Any other drivers associated with this behavior?
I do have an Epson Scanner, a Nikon slide scanner and
some USB devices attached.
Seems odd that a driver would cause a reboot...

Is there any way to protect the shares, preferably with different passwords
for each share?
