- Windows XP Hardware >> old harddrive, new computer?currently have a p4 computer with 40 gig hard drive. I would like to
install my old quantum 6.4 gig drive, with i took out of my old
unusable system. My old drive contains winxp and I set it up as a
master and slave with my new hard drive but my computer will not
recognize it. Is there anyway I can get this installed?

- Windows XP Setup >> Re-naming primary partitionI've just done a clean re-install of WinXP Home and have finished up with my
primary disc, windows programme disc, as drive D. which I don't want but am
a bit reluctant to mess with.
I have a sata 200 Gb drive which was formatted into two halves. Drive c was
windows and other programmes, drive d was data files. I had problems with
NVIDIA drivers which wouldn't go away so I zapped drive c , reformatted it
and re-installed winXP. When the dust settled it finished up as drive d and
the old drive d, data disc, is now drive c. This may or may not cause
confusion in the future since many applications assume that Drive c is the
root drive.
I don't know this but I assume that when windows installed, it hard coded
the path of all its constituent parts in the registry to drive d and this
would cause me much grief if I just renamed the two partitions.
I am not keen to start from scratch and reformat both partitions and
re-install Windows again so can anybody give me a steer on what the best way
forward might be.
Many thanks.

- Windows XP Support >> device error code 12:I am trying to fix a problem on a Dell Inspiron 5000e with SP2. The machine
keeps coming up with the below error for different devices. Removing and
reinstalling the driver for a Xircom ethernet card fixed that problem, but
when swapping that card for a Netgear WG511(v1) wireless card, the error
comes up again and I can't get rid of it.
This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12)
Apparently this setup (ACPI) doesn't support manual allocation of IRQ and
I/O addresses, so how can I fix this?

- Windows XP >> System does not boot - URGENTHi,
I have an XP system that suddenly will not boot up. It gets as far as
the Windows XP screen, then goes blank, and nothing. I tried to boot
into safe mode and it stopped at the file MUP.SYS. I booted into the
recovery console using the WinXP CD and tried a chkdsk /R c:\. THis
finished after quite some time and did not help. I then tried to
replace MUP.sys with the one from the CD. Same. Then I tried DISABLE
MUP and then it stopped at the file right before MUP (NDIS.sys).
Reinstallation is not an option here. Any ideas on what I can do? Is
there a way to run sfc from the recovery console?
Thanks.

- Windows XP Setup >> 553 error OutlookI have just installed XP Office standard. I have no problem with IE
finding/displaying web pages.
However, using Outlook to create email messages, I get the message when I
select the send button.
553 To send mail, first check your mail with a valid POP account; this
prevents unauthorized SPAM relaying. (#5.7.1)
Any ideas.

- Windows XP >> Msconfig QuestionI am trying to speed up boot time. WinXP Pro OEM installed a year ago.
Should I consider reinstall or just OS cleanup and tweet? I would like to
know if anyone could supply a link to a list of applications that can and
can not be removed from startup using MSCONFIG. I also would like to know
how I go about finding out what and why I have a box with check mark that
has no other information but points to
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. Are there any utilities
that I could use to clean up and speed up boot time?
Thanks for any pointers.

- Windows XP >> Backup Profiles without Long LogonHi
We use roaming profiles for all our desktop users, but have a couple of
laptop users who work off-line and require access to my docs etc whilst away
from the office.
We tried using offline files but found that the users had slow logons and
logoffs and slower access to the files than regular users. Is there an
alternative method to backup their profiles to the server without using
Offline Files?
Thanks

- Windows XP >> Network ProblemI have a small two-computer network, with each computer running Windows =

- Windows XP >> Stuck in LoopI need to reinstall the OS. I want to do a clean install
and I get stuck in a loop during setup when asked which
partition to install to (I currently only have 1). I
have the choice of deleting the partition or creating a
new partition. The option to create does not do anything
and I cannot create a new partition. If I try to delete
the existing partition, setup tells me that I cannot do
this because there are temporary setup files on the
partition. I cannot/don't want to install 2 OS on the
same partition. How do I get out of this loop and wipe
my machine to reload?

- Windows XP Update >> Windows update error 0xC8000586Has anyone been getting this error after the scan completes on the windows

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> Movie Maker problemsI am utterly disgusted with your product "Windows Movie Maker". I don't know,
neither do I care, what version it is. It came with XP Home I purchased this
year. After encountering extreme problems which had me reboot, lose projects,
system crashes etc. I refuse to be polite to whoever is responsible for
creating this software.
Whenever I try to open a project, the process of "checking project files"
either takes incredibly long (I'm talking about hours) or freezes.
When I import movies, it freezes.
When I save movies, it freezes or shuts down.
Every click and every step takes 10 seconds on average before the click
results in something, and by something, I also mean crashes.
When playing the time line, it lags and screws up the synchronization of
audio and video.
Frames are skipped or freeze.
Sometimes it just shuts down.
When previewing clips, the player turns black.
And NO, I am not going to reduce quality or remove effects. I demand
perfection from what I spent money on. I don't spend hours or, due to the
"speed" of this program, entire nights, making a video just to reduce it to
mediocre Youtube material. Fix it or refund my purchase of this horrible OS.
Oh btw, the "opening project files" advanced by an amazing 5% since I
accessed this newsgroup. How big is the project you ask? Hmm, by now it's 1
minute and 40 seconds. Ever since opening the project, more than an hour has
passed and only half of the checking process has finished so far.

Windows XP Support >> Help CD-Rom isn't working reboot not working
CD-Rom wouldn't work computer reconised the drivers for it but not the
drive it's self. (showed no D Drive at all anywhere). Replaced the ribbon
cable with a new one didn't help. BOught a brand new CD-Rom drive same
problem. Triued rebooting the Windows XP operating system from the cd went
all the way through the whole process booted up to install and got a "file
missing error". The file missing error message said that the "asms" file is
needed to continue. Whenever I try directing the computer to the file it
won't get it off the cd. The error message supposedly comes up whenever the
computer cannot find the CD-Rom Drive. So if it is finding the CD-Rom long
enough to repair the files but loosing it when it come time to install the
operating system. I have tried three different Windows XP installation CD's
with the same results and when I talked to Dell they said they would send me
a new Windows XP Cd which isn't going to help. ANyone have any suggestions
for me other than completely reprograming the whole computer. It is my
husbands computer and he doesn't want to loose everything he has stored on
the computer but I am not sure at this point if I can get a bootable gohst
copy off the computer. HELP ME I AM IN COMPUTER HELL. Thank You.

- Windows XP Support >> No Start-upI have had a problem with starting my PC for some time. It normally took
10min. before I could bring up any files. To cure this problem it was
suggested that I reinstall Windows. I did that and the installation was
completed and then the computer would not start up further than the first
three pages. The Windows then proceeded to carry out repair job, which they
did and re installed themselves again, but the computer on start up will not
go further than the "XP Professional" page. What can I do to get the
computer start and proceed to open Desktop?

- Windows XP >> Same system (with 98), new Hdd (with xp). Modem doesn't work.Hi.
My modem properties will not allow me to configure the settings. It says the
modem is using IRQ "18". Does xp dish out some "virtual IRQ's"?
Anyway, in 98, the modem uses COM2 and IRQ 10 (sharing with some onboard
components). In xp, it wants to use COM4 and IRQ "18" and I can't uncheck
"use automatic configuration" to reconfigure.
The modem, "Motorola SM56PCI Speakerphone" is detected upon installation
however will not connect nor receive AT commands (I think -I'm not that
professed at telnet).
I've downloaded the proper drivers yet nothing works. My immediate thought
is that it has assigned an IRQ (18) that doesn't exist but I can't change the
IRQ assignment.
Please help.

- Windows XP Network >> Help! My internet won't work!Hi, my computer has had an onslaught of spyware which I have removed but I
think that some spyware may have attached itself to an internet file that
communicated between my computer and the modem. I've called my isp numerous

computer, I've even tried switching to a new isp but that didn't work either.
Everytime I turn my computer on and check task manager the System Idle thing
is at zero (with no programs running at all) but svchost is at 97 or so and
my cpu is constantly at 100%. I just dont get what's going on, if anyone has
any suggestions I would be grateful! And for anyone thats curious I'm typing
