- Windows XP Support >> Hard drive power managementHi, I have a question about power management settings for desktops. I
understand all of the options except "shut off HDs". How can a HD truly be
off if there is any background processes going on? That is, if my computer
is doing periodic backups, communications with a company firewall, etc... how
does it ever shut down? When I test it out, and attempt to send things to
that computer across a network, it seems as if it's still on. It certainly
sounds on from just listening to the machine, and it doesn't appear to be
spinning down and then back up again like from standby. The problem is that
I need to maintain a 24/7 connection to the internet to receive packages and
patches, so I can't use standby.
Could anyone give me some more information on the "shut off HD" option in
the Power Management settings, and how to test if the HDs are truly shutting
down?

- Windows XP Network >> Multiple Machines & ProfilesAfter switching everyone from an Nt4 server to 2003 server and using the
domain migration tool, 2 out of the 17 computers in our office (all running

If a user logs out, then tries to log back in they get an error message
about the profile being missing, and having to use a temporary profile. If
the user reboots there isn't a problem.
The events from the event log are below. Does anyone know what the problem
may be? I've tried using msconfig to limit what starts up, but that doesn't
work.

- Windows XP Network >> Mixed OS network printing problemsHi all
I've set up a small network at home with 2 XP laptops and one Win98SE tower.
I have a printer plugged into the 98 machine (because I want to keep the
others portable and also it has a parallel port) but I can't print to it
from the XP machines. I can see the printer in the 'network places' but get
a 'cannot communicate with the printer' error when trying to print. I've
got XP drivers for the printer on the XP machines and Win98 drivers on the
98 machine. My network runs through a combined adls/router/gateway box. I
assume that the mixed OS thing is causing me the problem. This is the only
problem with the network, everything else, eg file sharing, works fine.
Anyone have any ideas how I can sort this out without buying a copy of XP
for the tower?
Thanks

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> GUI features disappear and programs won't launchI've been having a problem with Windows XP for the past
few months in which programs will stop opening and
certain GUI features will start disappearing. It's as if
my system is completely out of memory or system resources
(even though I have 512mb of RAM and the task manager
will show that there is still plenty of memory to spare).
This problem usually occurs when my computer has been on
for a while, or when I have several windows open (but by
no means an excessive amount). Here are the symptoms that
I've noticed:
- Internet Explorer icons will disappear, or the toolbar
layout will change itself to a more minimal display.
- Programs will refuse to launch. They will just issue
a "Windows error" sound when I click their icon, and will
give no other notification.
- Sometimes the task-list that usually pops up on a right-
click will simply not show up.
- Sometimes even the task manager will refuse to launch
on a Ctrl+Alt+Del.
It's as if my computer is at it's absolute breaking point
in terms of system resources, and simply cannot afford to
create one more process. And yet I do not have a
tremendous amount of processes running, and there is
still plenty of unused physical and virtual memory! I've
run memory diagnostic utilities such as MemTest86 and
Windows Memory Diagnostic, but they don't find any errors
in my RAM. So now I think is more a Windows XP issue. Any
ideas what the deal is?

- Windows XP Network >> Connecting two wireless networks?I'm pretty new to networking, and want to keep my question
simple. I have Verizon wireless, with XP-home computer and

Trying to connect printer to downstairs computer wirelessly.
Have connected printer and downstairs computer using Netgear

connect one to the other)?

Windows XP Hardware >> CD and CD-RW suddenly can't read discs.
Both my optical drives have stopped reading CDs. In My Computer the CD-RW
drive is blank and the CD drive gives a message saying,"Windows cannot read
from this disc ..." Both drives recognize a CD (music, data) if it is in the
drive when the computer boots. However, if you open and close the drive it
can no longer see the disc. With a music CD I can get it to play using
Windows Media Player even though My Computer shows nothing there. Device
Manager shows everything is fine. I have tried disabling AVG Antivirus. These
drives have worked for over 2 years until now.

If your local policy or domain policy prohibits, you can't use them. Please
check that these aren't in place.
Possibly the cable has come out from the mobo, does the BIOS detect the two
drives as it boots?

Windows XP Hardware >> CD and CD-RW suddenly can't read discs.
I have the same problem with my DVD and DVD-rw drives, except my floppy
drive is affected too! If I boot
in safe mode, then the drives all operate as they should. I've tried
uninstalling various programs which access the drives, I've uninstalled SP2,
I've deleted the drives and let XP autodetect them on startup. Nothing seems
to help.
Is there some sort of auto mounting device or setting that is not there or
set wrong? I really need help, I've been screwing around with this for a few
days and nothing seems to help.

Windows XP Hardware >> CD and CD-RW suddenly can't read discs.
Not sure what is meant by local or domain policy. The BIOS detects them fine
and they show up in My Computer. They just won't read any discs - except once
if the disc is in when I reboot. If I eject the disc and put it right back
in, it acts like it can't read the disc. I find it strange that this would
suddenly occur with both my optical drives but I'm stumped as to the cause.

Windows XP Hardware >> CD and CD-RW suddenly can't read discs.
I have the same problem... There are WAY too many people
with the SAME problem for it to be a hardware issue. It
has to be on the software side. I've been trying to fix
this myself for the last week. No luck here either,
however, its better than it was before.
I can now at least see the contents of my discs via this
registry hack http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?
scid=kb;en-us;314060, but the disc voluem label is still
missing, and the discs will not autoplay UNLESS I eject
the disc and then close it again. Then I have a 50/50
chance if it autoplaying, but now I should get the volume
label and the contents.
And just today I see I have another problem... while
testing, I installed a game and it asked for a second
disc, no problem, but the second disc in and it reads...
then after its done, it wants the first one again, no
problem, however, this time my drive disappears! Now the
game can't be completed and I'm back to square one.
Like the others, if I leave the disc or any disc in and
reboot, it sees it fine. And I've also tried safe mode
like other people and it works fine, at least reading and
getting the volume label. I sure hate to re-install, but
knowing my luck, it won't do any good anyway. Hehe

Windows XP Hardware >> CD and CD-RW suddenly can't read discs.
Another victim of similiar problems & error messages with year old CD-RW
drive that worked perfectly until month ago using CD Creator Platinum 6.
Just installed Roxio Easy Media Creator 7 and didn't resolve drive issue.
BIOS, Device Manager & other locations all show drive ok. Have tried
all the different things already mentioned by others and googled the problem
to death this past month to no avail. At least my CD-ROM will read disks
but obviously can't back up to that one. Would be a nice start to New Year
if some knowledgeable MVP out there would try and track down why so
many having similiar problems and give us a working solution rather than
telling us what most of us have already checked or done on our own to try
and resolve issue.

Windows XP Hardware >> CD and CD-RW suddenly can't read discs.
Hi All
I had this problem for several months . I recentrly came across this on a
newsgroup and hey presto everything is back and working.
It appears that if you have installed a USB flash drive this causes the
problem. I have deleted the software that enabled me to spilt the drive into
a private and open area and everything is ok.
I would be intersted to know if any of you have recently installed a USB
falsh Drive/Pen

Did you ever get a solution to your problem? I have spent the last wee

fine. Late in the day, after installing SP2 on a Windows XP Home P

Windows XP Hardware >> CD and CD-RW suddenly can't read discs.
I haven't figured it out and I'm getting burnt out trying
to.
BIOS sees the drive; Windows sees the drive and assigns a
driver letter; Windows shows a driver installed with no
conflicts or problems; Windows Explorer sees the drive.
Everything looks fine... but Windows Explorer can't see
anything on any disc UNLESS I reboot with the disc in the
drive. Then it sees the disc, shows the volume label and
contents. I then can install from that disc/play a game
that needs a disc. Obviously its not a defective drive.
Thats where I'm at... I have done the registry hack to
take out the high and low filter values and that only
temporarily let me see the content of some of the discs,
but no volume label or no autoplay.
Sadly, it looks like I might re-install everything, but
I'm sure not looking forward to it with all the various
tweaks I've made to my computer.
Searching the net for answers has yielded very little.
I've read of some people who have fixed theirs, but what
they did usually refered to software I have never
installed/used.(Roxio - Easy CD Creator or something like
that).
There is no new firmware for my drive, I've checked on
that and have already flashed the one they had a long
time ago. Like I said, I'm getting burnt out.
I might make a clone of my drive and try some more
extreme stuff before I wipe it and re-install.
Oh, another problem I have, somewhat along the same lines
is that when I delete files that go to the recycle bin,
sometimes they don't show up. The icon shows theres files
in the bin, but a double click shows nothing. However, if
I click to empty the bin, it asks me if I'm sure I want
to delete them and gives the number of files... *Shrug*
I'm amazed MS seems to know nothing about the CD problem
with so many people having it.

Windows XP Hardware >> CD and CD-RW suddenly can't read discs.
I believe 1) it is a Windows thing, or 2) a virus caused it. I have ha
the same prob for abt a month now and cannot figure out th
cause/solution; altho I am glad to know I am not alone. My Zip drive
floppy drive, CD-RW and DVD drives all stopped reading anythin
inserted into them; however Windows did recognize them in "M
Computer." When a disk is inserted into any of them, I get the messag
telling me to insert a disk.
About a week after they stopped working, I did get the error message
(two) telling me that I had unplugged the DVD/CD-RW without tellin
Windows first, which can cause u to lose data...blah..blah..blah.
NOTHING was unplugged and NOTHING was done (installed, changed in an
way) that would have caused this sudden lapse. Strangely enough, th
Zip drive started reading disks again last night, but the others ar
still defunct. Since no changes were made to my system prior to thi
happening, that is why I think it could be a virus or a Windows glitch
I have various various virus protection and adware protection an
whatnot tho.

Windows XP Hardware >> CD and CD-RW suddenly can't read discs.
I believe its a windows problem as well.
I have Ad-Aware SE Personal, Spybot 1.3, and AVG Anti-
Virus 7.0 Free running, all of which are updated on a
regular basis... I also use on occasion:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp
I use it for secondary security.
I too have a Zip Drive, floppy, ONE CD-RW Drive for the
moment (for testing... I took my other CD-ROM Drive out -
which has the same problem anyway).
Just tested my Zip Drive and floppy drive - neither work
either - Nice! But I'm sure they work GREAT in safe mode.
Just to see where we stand, I have SP1 installed with all
other critical updates (No SP2, yet; no .NET Framework
stuff or Media Player 10). I'd rather try to fix this
problem before I install SP2, but as its going now, I'll
be waiting forever.
Do you all have SP2 installed yet?

Windows XP Hardware >> CD and CD-RW suddenly can't read discs.
Greetings,
My CD situation is virtually identical to that of Jakar. It just migh
be related to a virus masquerading under the name of "wuauclt", th
windows update program. (Well, that's the only virus I'm sure I have
This virus incidentally hinders my internet access as well, and I ha
to close it every time I go on line.
Mike Harradence: Your situation is interesting. I happen to have US
flash drives too, but never installed any drivers yet so I don't thin
that's causing it.
Things just get stranger and stranger

- Windows XP Support >> Desktop icons highlightedToday my desktop icons developed backgrounds behind the words. For example
"My Documents" instead of just being words on the screen is now in a
rectangular box. The color of the text box can be changed by changing the
desktop themes but I can't turn it off.
Thanks

- Windows XP Network >> My website through "My Network Places", not working correctlyI have a domain and hosted site through godaddy. I have a link to my website
under my network places. The link is to my root directory. Used to, if I
browsed to a folder and clicked on a jpg file, IE would open up and display
the jpg. In the address of IE would be the full path to the file. I could
copy this and paste it into forums. Now, when i click a jpg on my website
through my network places, I get windows fax and pic viewer and it says can't
display preview. I can't remember changing anything.
When I click on a jpg in a regular windows folder, the file opens up with
windows fax in pic viewer and shows the picture. If I go to file properties
and tell jpg's to open with Adope Photoshop, if I click on something on my
computer, photoshop opens and the file shows. But, If I browse to my website
through my network places, and click a jpg, photoshop will open but no file
will display?
What could have changed??
Thanks

This file does not have a program associated with it.

How do I create an association file???

- Windows XP Support >> Network XP file server set-up difficultiesI'm trying to complete the replacement of an old Linux server for my church
with a new XP file server because we need more storage space and the vendor
for our data management software does not support Linux. Every time they
send a software upgrade, we have problems that they have trouble helping us
resolve because of the way Linux and windows products differ in management
of permissions. Part of the transfer is done and working well, other parts
I'm having trouble getting to allow mapping to two resources simultaneously.
1. Each user needs to be mapped to the data folder for the data management
software [done and running smoothly]
2. Each user needs access to a shared folder for a few documents that we
all need to see and/or modify (password protection desirable, but not
absolutely necessary) [conflicts with step 3 below]
3. Each user also needs access to a folder on the server that only they
have access to (with password protection) [conflicts with step 2 above]
I had steps 1 and 2 done, but when I tried to accomplish step 3, I ran into
conflicts and got messages like: "The network folder is currently mapped
using a different user name and password. To connect using a different user
name and password, first disconnect any existing mappings to this network
share." and/or "Multiple connections to a server or shared resource by the
same user, using more than one user name, are not allowed. Disconnect all
previous connections to the server or shared resource and try again."
When I disconnected and tried again, I lost step 2 on the workstation that I
was using. That's what got me here to ask the wisdom of those who know what
they're doing.
Here's what the file structure I'm trying to work with on the server looks
like (actual file names are different, but this is where they are):
C:\membership data folder
C:\shared documents
C:\users\user1
C:\users\user2
C:\users\user3
C:\users\user4
C:\users\user5
C:\users\user6
I have administrator rights on the server, so I can make any changes in
permissions there. Any help much appreciated.
Thanks.

- Windows XP Security >> UpdateI downloaded windows security patch and the window that

don't have to. How do I know if it is complete or not?

- Windows XP Setup >> System ShutdownBuilt a system for a friend recently. Installed XP Home
and service packs 1 and 2.
Installs all went perfectly with no problems. However
since install the system shuts down after a couple of
minutes for no apparent reason. It totally locks up,
doesn't allow reset or anything and has to have the power
supply shut off at the wall. Once plugged back in it
restarts with out problems and then runs without any
problem till the next time it is switched on.
The system configuration is as follows:
Asrock K7S8XE Mainboard
AMD Athlon XP+ 3200 (200 FSB)
512MB PC3200 DDR 400
120Mb 8Mb Cache 7200 HDD
Nvidia AGP graphics card
Creative Audigy
Realtek 10/100 network card
All the drivers have been updated to the most recent
versions. I am at a loss as to where to go from here with
this problem and would appreciate any suggestions.
Many Thanks

- Windows XP Support >> IE7 Parental ControlsI am trying to use parental controls on my kids computer. The way it is set
up, the first web-site they view is OK, but other web-sites embeded ask for
a password. How can I get the system to allow embedded web-sites within a
web-site I deem OK to be viewed without a password. This is very anoying.

- Windows XP Update >> MS: Please Fix svchost.exe problemThis bug has me and apparently many others fighting this problem all the
time instead of getting any work done. It's seems that it is related to
Windows Update.
I have noted the conspicuous absence of replys from anyone at Microsoft when
this problem gets posted - and it gets posted plenty everywhere.
Time to fess up! Stand up, take responsibility, and fix the problem. (or
maybe I'll buy a Mac next time)

- Windows XP Support >> sleep awake does not show icons, only backgroundThis is WinXP pro, with all updates applied. When the system display has
gone to sleep and a key is pressed, the background appears but no icons. The
only keys that work are ctl/alt/del. It then shows the icons and the task
manager window. After canceling the task manager window the system seems to
work properly. The system is protected by PCCilian and router firewall.
When I tried to do a repair install using the XP CD, it said the system was
a later version than the CD and did not want to run.
I hope someone has some idea how to eliminate the problem.
