- Windows XP Setup >> Outlook Express continually DiallingA friend has Windows XP Home and Outlook Express 6.
Each time she opens up her computer and after the desktop is displayed
the computer automatically dials up her ISP - Virgin.net. This means
that she cannot use her computer without going on line.
The only way she can operate her computer is to unplug the phone line.
Even then the modem continues to try to dial up her ISP.
I have checked that "Never dial a connection" is ticked in the Internet
Options, Connections Dialogue Box, I have removed the modem and
re-loaded it, I have done a full Virus Scan all to no avail.
I would appreciate any suggestions as to what might be causing this and
any suggestions on how to stop it.

- Windows XP Support >> problems with new installationHi,
I just installed Windows XP Home on my computer. I had Windows ME. The
installation seemed to go alright but now a lot of my old programs don't
work. Also all the stuff that was on my desktop is gone. I can navigate and
find some of my old folders on my c drive, but when I open some of them they
are empty, but should have files in them. Can someone tell me what is
happening.
Thanks

- Windows XP Security >> changing passwords? We currently have a couple of XP pro pcs on our network. We needed to
change there network passwords (Server 2003 AD). After changing them on the
server, they could not login into the domain. Do you have to change
anything on the client PC or does changing it on the server (active
directory user and computers) get the job done. We changed them back to the
original for now.
Thanks for your response...

- Windows XP >> Remote AssistanceI was able to establish a connection with another computer using Remote
Assistance. They have Home XP and I have XP Professional. I was able to
take everything out of their startup (except for their AntiVirus) using
System Configuration Utility (msconfig). I also cleared a lot out through
Internet Options. I also found a network connection that wasn't being used,
so I disabled it, since she was using her Dial Up Connection.
The next time we tried to establish a Remote Assistance connection, I get an
error telling me that there was a problem resolving the host name. We
resent the invitation several times, assuming that it might have just timed
out. We got the host name resolution error several times.
Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this? I have tried to
figure out what I might have disabled by mistake that could have caused this
problem.
Thank you for your assistance in this matter.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Slow Down In Multimedia PerformanceI have recently installed Windows XP Pro on a clean hard
drive but im experiencing some sound and performance
problems.
Everytime I play a sound, be it an MP3, .Wav file etc.
the sound stutters and slows down. It doesnt matter
whether its in Winamp or Windows Media 9. Video files
pause and skip too.
Another thing I have noticed is that whenever I load up
Winamp or WM9, the mouse pointer skips and stutters
across the screen too- meaning there is probably some
sort of performance issue at the heart of this.
All my drivers are up to date- and there are no conflicts
whatsoever. I ran Sandra Diagnostics on my computer and
it did state that my "IOQD" level was set too low and by
putting my motherboard to its "optimised" level it should
resolve the problem. My BIOS is now set to "optimised"
but still no difference to the sound and performance
problem!
I have a P3 800, 384mb RAM, A 20GB Master and a 80GB
Slave Hard Drive and 64mb AGP GeForce 2. My Soundcard is
on-board (C-Media 8738)
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Windows XP >> My Computer Filing System
I am trying to use My Computer as a filing system for work but i need to use
some kind of cross referencing system. Is there a way that I can link files
in different folders so that when you open up a folder you can see all the
relevant files even if they are stored in other folders?? and then when you
make changes to a file it recognises the changes to that file in all its
locations?

Windows XP >> My Computer Filing System
You can probably do that using Microsoft Office but I don't think it's
possible in Windows.

Windows XP >> My Computer Filing System
How many files are we talking about? What kind of files are they, i.e.- word
processing, database, spreadsweet, graphics? How many new files do you
create in a typical day? When you say "... recognize the changes in all it's
locations..." , I am assuming you do not want multiple copies of a particular
file which could become multiple copies with DIFFERENT content.
One simple way would be to manually make shortcuts for a particular file in
different folders. Then, no matter where you open a file from, you would
actually be accessing only one "master" file. Any changes you made would be
to just that one master file and so you would not have multiple versions.
Start here:
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/moredone/organizefiles.mspx
You may also want to investigate Sync Toy from Microsoft (its free)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/digitalphotography/prophoto/synctoy.mspx
You might also want to look in the documentation for your
word-processor/database/spreadsheet programs for OLE (object linking and
embedding).
More than anything else, thoughtful, patient planning will make your file
system effective (along with a little trial and error). Just remember to
backup all your files before you make major changes to your file system.

- Windows XP Support >> Cannot delete file named "CAFESLKT."Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 2
There's a file on my hard drive named "CAEFSLKT." No extension but followed
by a "." so perhaps there's invisible character(s) in the extension. 0 KB in
size.
It's a System, Hidden file but only revealed as such with the command window
command "attrib". It's dated a few months ago and the date has no
significance to me. It's not when I installed Windows XP or can remember
having done any updates. I don't know the file's origin. If I Google
"CAEFSLKT" nothing is returned.
I can move the file and have moved it to C:\Folder\
If I try to delete the file I receive the following error:
"Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the source file or disk."
If I right click the file and select "Properties" the "Read-only" and
"Hidden" boxes are NOT checked. If I check either of them and click "Apply"
I receive the following error:
An error occurred applying attributes to the file:
C:\FOLDER\CAFESLKT.
The system cannot find the file specified.
Using "attrib *.*" in a command window the file is shown as:
SH C:\FOLDER\CAFESLKT.
If I try to remove the system attribute with "attrib *.* -s" I receive the
following error:
Not resetting hidden file - C:\FOLDER\ CAFESLKT.
If I try to remove the hidden attribute with "attrib *.* -h" I receive the
following error:
Not resetting system file - C:\FOLDER\ CAFESLKT.
If I try to remove both the hidden and system attributes with "attrib
*.* -h -s " (or -s -h) I receive the following error:
Unable to change attribute - C:\FOLDER\ CAFESLKT.
Delete *.* or Erase *.* return no error but do not delete the file.
I want to delete this annoying file but can't seem to affect it in any way.
Can anyone provide a solution?

- Windows XP Network >> Slower netware access from xp clientsHello people..
I recently updated a Novell Netware 4.11 Server's Hardware and installed a new XP client among other w98 clients running Microsoft Client for Netware networks
The clients are running BRequest to the Netware server, and using a DOS program
In some data search, the w98 clients take about 10sec. to finalize the search, while the XP client take about 50-60 sec
I tried already the Novell client but the timing is the same
I also tried several things I found in the Net to accellerate netware access... no luck
I even installed just the netware client and IPX only to avoid any conflicts with the windows network... no luck
Is the XP client really slower then the w98 clients ??
please help..

- Windows XP >> Ponza A virusMy anti virus program (CA e-Trust EZ AntiVirus) has
identified the following Ponza A virus:
C:\System Volume Information\Restore{F8D3E663-439A-4F56-
A12E-87568CA318C1}\RP100\A0012728.exe
I see the C:\System Volume Information\ path under the
anti-virus software view of the tree, but can't figure
how to access it for deletion of the virus (under C: in
windows I don't see the folder 'System Volume
Information').
I tried searching for different portions of the string
w/o luck.
I have run both Spybot & AdAware without any luck.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

- Windows XP >> Question regarding DirectX on Virtual PC 2007...I'm having a hard time trying to to make this work...
I installed Virtual PC 2007 on my:
Intel Pentium 4 3.06Ghz
ASUS motherboard
1Gb RAM
128Mb Video card
80Gb of HDD
Windows XP Prof OEM SP2 with updated patches
inside VPC2007: Windows XP Prof (the same OS on my physical CPU)
I installed RAN Online (Phil. Server), by the time in starting the game...
it switches to reference rasterizer because the game said
" No hardware-accelerated Direct3D devices were found. Switching to the
reference rasterizer, a software device that implements the entire
Direct3D feature set, but runs very slowly."
I already installed Microsoft DirectX SDK in my physical CPU...
Is there a way to use my physical video accelerator to my virtual OS?

- Windows XP >> Pin 2 Start Menu icons randomly duplicatedLately, the Icons placed under the Pin to Start Menu section are ramdomly
duplicated, after I rapidly move the mouse, or after closing a program window.
It is very annoying. I had to select small icons in order to be able to see
the list.
The problem clears every time I boot up.
Does anyone knows the reason for such behavior?
System has Windows XP PRO, SP2, plus all the lates updaates and patches, the
same goes for IE 7.
Thanks for your advice on this issue.
