Windows XP >> Trying to copy XP to bigger Hard Drive Have been unsuccesful the last two days trying to copy my 20 GB XP system to
a brand new 80GB HD. I have used the Mfg disk (Maxtor) to format and copy
to new disk. Format was OK, showed 81GB. Did the file copy but system does
not boot. NTLDR is missing error which prompts you to insert OS disk and
install. I want to avoid a new install and just copy existing system. I
then tried Disk Image 7.0, did the copy, same error NTLDR is missing. Disk
Image has a copy MBR selection which I did, same result. Back in the DOS
days you could format C: /s or do a Sys C: but I thought I should be able to
get past this. What am I missing here??? Tx Mike

>Ok what you need is norton ghost,
firstly install xp on your new drive, this should format
and enable a boot sector,
then create a ghost boot disk and boot from it,
record the serial number when the ghost window opens in
DOS,
then ghost your small drive across to your new drive.
This worked for, me so good luck

Windows XP >> Trying to copy XP to bigger Hard Drive Hi,

You can xfer files from your Hard drive to a bigger or
smaller drive using Maxtor Maxblast 3.

I do it many times to backup my data and I am using XP
Pro...but it works on all op systems because it xfers via
DOS.....

Anyway, take your new hard drive and install it as a
SLAVE. Note, a Slave only..... leave your existing Hard
drive with XP as the Master. Insert your CD-ROM in to the
cd drive and make sure you BIOS is set to boot to the CD-
rom first and not your hard drive.

Once you boot and the Maxblast 3 software does its
thing.... you need to select the option that says "set up
your hard drive"..... click on that icon. Next, select
your hard drive you want to set up.... being the SECONDARY
hard drive.....click on that.... then click next. YOu
will get to a point where it asks what op system you want
to use.... click on XP

You will get various warning messages as you go along....
the important part is when you get to the option that
says, SET UP NEW HARD DRIVE AS BOOT ? " Make sure you
select that option...... you will then be able to
partition the drive and make sure you set the type of
partition (ie FAT32)......

Once the partitions are set..... and you click Next.... it
will format the drive and begin coping files "from the
boot drive"...... after the transfer is done you will
have an exact copy that is bootable.

If you have more than one partition.... after the boot
partition and files are created...(ie disk2part01) "C"
just go back to the Maxtor Utilities and select "copy
partition"..... it will then bring you to a windows
showing both drive.....a source and destination. Select
what ever partition (ie disk1part2) on your source drive
(master) and then click on the destination (ie disk2part02)
on the Slave.... click Next and it will begin coping the
files....

I just finished doing this last night and today on my 160
GB hard drive......... pls note this was kinda quick/brief
info... you will see it as you go along.

After using disk image to clone the drive, are you swapping the drives or
leaving them connected where they where?

Windows XP >> Trying to copy XP to bigger Hard Drive Mike I had the exact same problem posted a few lines back up. I had
tried Drive Image 7, Partition Expert and one other. I finally dug out
my old copy of Norton Ghost 2002 and it worked like a charm. It is
difficult to make a true copy of Windoews while you're still running
Windows. With Ghost you boot from a floppy and do everything in PC-DOS
or MS-DOS, your choice, but it makes a copy of Windows while nothing
is active in the Windows program.

Thanks for your description, I have wasted hours trying to find out
how to write the MBR (aka boot sector), your post gave me the crucial
step of using the manufactuers set up procedure.
