- Windows XP Support >> Winxp pro usb drive boot problemsThe strangest thing is happening:
My windows xp pro machine will only boot with a USB drive in the USB
port.
If I take the usb drive out and boot this happens:
first the windows xp screen comes up, then after a few seconds it will
go to a black screen and do nothing.
I have to hold the off button for 30 seconds to shut it down.
then I put the usb drive in, boot up and windows boots up with no
problems.
I have checked bios settings, bios set to boot only to the SATA HD
and shut off booting from USB.
The only strange file on my usb drive is a BOOTEX.log file.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!

- Windows XP Network >> Help! Internet Explorer BrokeI am running WinXP Pro. Had a problem with Norton software and tried
to remove it. Long story short... I reinstalled WinXP Pro SP2 on top
of my confused system.
Then I found more traces of Norton, and I used the standalone Norton
Uninstaller.
Now I have a system that is basically at SP2 level. I also have
ZoneAlarm Security Suite running.
I try to get upgrades by clicking on Windows Upgrade in Win Explorer.
The first thing that happens is I get an error message that says:
"Windows cannot find '(null)'. Make sure you typed the name
correctly....."
This opens a blank window. I click OK on the error message and then I
get the Microsoft Update Home page.
I click "Express" . It checks for updates and then comes up with a
"Download and Install Now" button. I click it and I get a window that
says it is installing. Then a message says "the following updates were
not installed" Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1"
And this is as far as I can get.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in Advance.

- Windows XP >> Clean Install of Windows XP --drive letters switched!I had to do a clean install of my Windows XP operating system.
Previously, my Windows installation was on my 80-gig C: drive. I also
had a 160 gig D: drive.
I did the install, things seem to be working, except ... now the C:
drive and D: drive are reversed. The system thinks Windows is
installed on the 80-gig D: drive now.
Can I change the drive letters without screwing things up? If so, how?

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> MASSIVE system slowdown on 2 PCs!!I have two PCs:
-- HP desktop (Athlon 2800+, 1GB, two 200GB drives)
-- Fujitsu laptop (PIII-M, 1GB, 40GB)
I recently installed SP2 on both PCs. Havoc ensued. I
lost all my network connections immediately -- and D-Link
said it's a known problem with SP2 rendering their
hardware inoperable. (Though there's nothing on their
site about SP2.) After literally hours reconfigging and
on with D-Link tech support, I had to give up and roll
back to pre-SP2 on both PCs.
I still had serious problems getting my home network &
internet back; had to call D-Link several times, reset
the router repeatedly, remove & reinstall
connections/bridges, etc. Finally got things working
again.
But now, BOTH computers run like molasses! Internet
connections are noticeably slower (I'm on broadband), and
occasionally time out. But the worst part is my day-to-
day usage. Some examples:
-- Startup takes MUCH longer than before. Gets to the
desktop, then the HD light clicks for a REALLY long time
(way longer than it used to) before it calms down and I
can run a program.
-- Accessing the HD for anything at all results in huge
disk-access delays. Double-clicking a folder to open it,
using Windows Explorer, right-clicking a file, dropping
down a menu -- you click and it's literally several
minutes of disk activity and frozen screen before
anything happens.
-- I have a home wireless network. Accessing files
between the computers used to be tolerable, but now it's
just ridiculous. Double-clicking a folder or tree on the
other computer leads to 5-10 minutes of hourglass. (!!)
-- And very strangely, on the desktop PC, I'm coming back
after a while to find it's rebooted and is at the login
screen! This is happening a couple of times a day. I
save data, of course, but am now constantly getting
the "XXXX was closed abnormally" error whenever I run a
program, because the thing rebooted on its own. It's
never done this before, and I have no idea what's causing
it.
Quick stats: I'm using eTrust Firewall & AntiVirus;
Spybot, SpywareBlaster, AdAware, and SpySweeper. (All
current and updated.) I defrag regularly, and run
utilities to find & remove disk junk. I work all day at
this machine, so I keep it tuned very well. I am
thoroughly stumped, and very frustrated.
I see a lot of posts about slowdowns, but all seem to
trigger the answer to "clean up the computer." Well,
mine's clean, and the only thing I've done recently is
add and remove SP2.
Any insight or ideas at all would be MUCH appreciated.
Thank you!

- Windows XP Support >> File transfer using BluetoothI've connected my laptop to my desktop and am trying to transfer files
between the two. I can do this from teh desktop to the laptop. but not the
other way around. when I click on Start, All Programs, Accessories,
Communcations - there is no "Bluetooth File Transfer Wizard" option as I have
on my laptop. The laptop has built-in, integrated laptop functionality
whereas the desktop has a USB Bluetooth receiver/transmitter.

- Windows XP Setup >> Need help for particular search and other stuff....I am asking to find out that when you try to do an install but use the
option to "Repair this Install" and it asks for the Admin. password, I am
fairly sure that I didn't ever use one on the initial install. So I just hit
the CR without entering any at all. But no go.
What I would like to lknow is if there is anyway to search for that password
and just what exactly would you ask to search for? "password"? Or regedit
from the start button/run/regedit... etc but where in the registry might it
be found? \
Does anyone have this level of knowledge to give me this info? I am having
various problems with this install and it seems to be getting worse. I am
trying to install my wireless router's software again after an RMA on the
router, but I get an error and it will not even allow me to install the
software. The Windows Magagment Instrumentation (WMI) {look in Local Area
Connection Properties, under the Advanced Tab, and it should show the
Firewall settings I beleive. But mine has a message that reads:
Windows cannot display the properties of this connection. The Windows
Managament Instrumentation (WMI)information might be corrupted. To correct
this, use System Restore and restore Windows to an earlier time. Says a bit
more but it is inmaterial to this post. Before I was having a problem
installing a new USB Wireless NetworkAdapter.
What my other question is, is it possible to install OVER the OS that is
currently on the HD if a FULL Program for XP Pro is used and not just an
Upgrade CD? What needs to be done to guarantee to be able to do this IF you
can that is. I have wayyyyyyyyyy to much stuff to do a complete install from
scratch and lose all of that if I can avoid it. No know viruses, spyware
etc. have been found in any scans done.
Thanks for any help. One last thing if if possible or necessary and
available, this email address can be used to send any files or documentation
to it to allow clear instructions and info if need be.
Thanks for any help that comes in...

- Windows XP Network >> XP Prof - Port 119 problem - News ReaderI used to be able to connect to news servers from my XP box. A few months back, my news reader stopped working
I have since tried several different news reader clients connecting to various news servers...all resulting on timeouts when trying to connect
When I telnet to port 119 on a news server, I can connect, and I can get a list of groups, but if I type the command 'MODE READER', which is the command the news clients are trying to run when they connect, I never get a response in telnet...it eventually times out
I have a linksys router connecting to the net via DSL. On my internal network, I have the XP Pro box, and a WinMe box. The WinME box has no problem running the 'MODE READER' command via telnet going thru the same router
XP's firewall is disabled. I had Sygate Personal Firewall installed on XP, but uninstalled it, and still had the problem
I suspect this problem started occuring with a SP or patch from MS, but not sure.
IP traffic of all other types seems to run fine, and I can connect to servers via port 119, just not get a response to the 'MODE READER' command (even tho this test works fine from the WinME box)
Any ideas or other folks with this issue

- Windows XP Support >> Error when trying to connect to XP from RD ClientI have one laptop (A) and two desktop computers (B) + (C), and all are
running XP Pro (SP2 and updated with MS updates)
Suddenly I got this problem which makes me unable to connect to one of the
desktops computer.
I used RD client on the laptop (A) to connect to my desktop computers, but
now the RD client gives some problem when I try to connect to desktop (B) â??
The laptop can still connect to desktop (C) and several other computer.
When I attempt to connect to desktop computer (B) I get to the login screen,
enter the name and password, then the RD Client go black and nothing happens.
I can cancel the RD Client on the laptop, but the desktop computer is not
responding and the screen is black and only showing the hour-glass. I have to
reboot the desktop compute (B) by pressing the switch ï??.
In the Event Log on the desktop computer (B) there is only one error
information, which is for the TermDD process:
"The RDP protocol component X.224 detected an error in the protocol stream
and has disconnected the client."
It has Event ID 50.
I have been trying to find information and help to solve this issue for over
a month with no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated. So if you need
more information please do not hesitate to ask.

I tried this suggestion: Kelly, try a system file check.
Start>Run type: sfc /scannow Have
the winxp cd in the cdrom drive.
I cannot find my winxp cd but I did find out that I can
check my files and do the "system tool" activities
through "my computer" - "performance and maintenance" so
the programs are still there. I just want them back in
my program lists?

- Windows XP Setup >> USB device problemsI have a question about my USB devices. All of the USB devices when plugged
have a message pop up telling me that my computer does not recognize my
devices. I have read up a little on this forum and the suggestion to
uninstall and reinstall the software for my camera, mp3 player and phone. I
had reinstalled everythign and found the same problem, my computer doesn't
recognize any device, however my printer which is also plugged into the USB
port works fine and is recognized in any of the 6 ports i plug it into.
Is there anything I can try to do before I take it to a professional??
Thanks

- Windows XP Security >> Sharing with 2000 serverI need help!. I am trying to teach the use of windows XP
in sharing folders in a domain setting. When we go to the
share folder and go to permissions, the only thing that
we see is the local machine name. If we reboot the
computer, sometimes we can see the domain name in the
permissions for a very short time and then it goes away.
Have you ever heard of this and can you give me a hint as
to what the problem could be?
Our domain controller is a windows 2000 server and we are
on a local domain. Windows 2000 clients have no problem
setting up shares but in trying to use Windows XP we can
not get the permissions set.

- Windows XP >> Extended support for XP is a joke just read the fine print.Just days before launching Windows Vista, Microsoft is pretending to
extend the support lifecycle for the consumer versions of its currently
shipping Windows XP system.
Microsoft is now providing five years of "mainstream" support, plus
five years of "extended support" for XP Media Center and XP Home
Edition.
Consequently, consumer versions of XP are now covered under mainstream
support through April 2009, and under extended support through April
2014.
The rip off iof this deal is in mainstream and extended support, the
difference is the way Microsoft treats non-security-focused hotfixes.
Under mainstream support, Microsoft provides these kinds of hotfixes
for free. Under extended, customers are required to pay for
non-security hotfixes and must sign an "extended hotfix agreement,
purchased within 90 days of mainstream support ending."
not so good news for all of those with older or lower powered computers
with Windows XP Home or MCE installed. Those computers will never see
Vista because they can't run it to it's full potential. So this will
only keep those older or lower powered hardware running for another 7
years. I consider 15 to 20 years at least a reasonable life for a
computer before it either breaks down or becomes so obsolete in that it
is no longer no capable of ordinary tasks with then current
applications.
Being out in the real world and still finding people running Win98, I
can guarantee WinXP will probably be around a lot longer than that.
With Vista's hardware requirements being so high, all these lower end
computers that will still be around need to run something. It seems
Microsoft has learned just how long people will use older technology
that still works(as well as any M$ software works) - which makes
abandoning these customers so sickening.
The differences between what's covered by mainstream and extended
support are detailed below. Basically, you have to pay for real support
during the extended support period.
