I suggest you post to one of the Defender newsgroups, or the windows update
newsgroup or both. First look through the messages in those groups for
anything on point, before posting a new question. If you need to post a new
question give specific info on what update this is (KB#).

Microsoft has established separate newsgroups for Windows Defender support
and comments. This is not one of them. See

Hi Darla,
Uninstall the old version and download the new one from the link below:
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

Also do you have Anti-virus Installed, turn the AV OFF when you do the
installation.

Here a lot of scenarios like yours and answers and you can post there if
your issue not been resolved:
http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?&query=Shintaro+Furumoto&lang=en&cr=US&guid=&sloc=en-us&dg=microsoft.private.security.spyware.install&p=1&tid=7645666d-d867-4354-8ad6-6c73c403957f

If all fail try to run the Run command: sfc /scannow and let it run.
Do you get an Error Message, try to look in the event viewer for any error
messages (X) reported in the Error log.
HTH.
