- Windows XP Network >> XP SP1, Fax service, and Proxy 2.0 client don't work togetherThe XP SP1, XP Fax service, and Proxy 2.0 client don't
work together. Any combination of two works fine. But add
any third and the computer continually reboots. I can't
find anything in the knowledge base about it. I have to
use the Proxy client, so my options are to not use the Fax
service or not to install any XP patches. I'm behind a
firewall, so I might just leave off the patches. Unless I
can find a fax servce to use instead of XP Fax. I've
heard that Winfax for XP is nothing but problems so I'd
like to stay away from that.
If you have a good answer, please reply to
keith@pulleninc.com
Thanks

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> won't save my movieHelp says movies can be saved "quickly" but when I try to save mine (which is about 1 1/2 hour long) and leave it going all night, the next morning it's only about 45% completed, and a couple of hours later it's still only 45% completed. What's a reasonable time to wait to save a movie, a week???

Windows XP Update >> Trouble with old SUS client
Hi,
i've updated my domain from SUS to WSUS.
Most of the computers report , download and install correctly.
But i got few ones that don't do anything...they apply the good GPO but no
windows update.log in windows directory, no "C:\WINDOWS\softwareDistribution"
folder
Those computers are all XP SP1, they still got SUS windowsupdate.log.
I checked the proxy for winhttp : OK
Tried all the wuauclt /detectnow : Nothing happened
The computer don't have SUSSID in registry.
So i tried to install WindowsUpdateAgent20-x86.exe
Install : ok, i reboot...then run ClientDiag.exe :
Look at this :

Windows XP Update >> Trouble with old SUS client
Finally i succeed....the problem was : Client had MSI Version 2.0 (and need
3.1)
When i first tried to update MSI...i had an error on Cryptographic
service...(trouble with integrity of update.inf)
Here the solution (And then all my clients auto-updated to WSUS client)
1) run this :
:: Stop the Cryptographic service
%SystemRoot%\System32\net.exe stop CryptSvc
:: Rename all log files in the %SystemRoot%\Security folder
FOR %%a in (%SystemRoot%\Security\*.log) DO move /y %%a %%a.old
:: Rename the %SystemRoot%\System32\CatRoot2 folder
move /y %SystemRoot%\System32\CatRoot2 %SystemRoot%\System32\CatRoot2old
IF not exist %SystemRoot%\System32\CatRoot2 GOTO CONT01
:: In case the folder rename failed because of locked files
:: rename all log files in the %SystemRoot%\System32\CatRoot2 folder
FOR %%a in (%SystemRoot%\System32\CatRoot2\*.log) DO move /y %%a %%a.old
SET catroot2locked=True
:CONT01
:: Unregister DLL files that are associated with Cryptographic Services
CD /D %SystemRoot%\System32
start /wait regsvr32.exe /s /u softpub.dll
start /wait regsvr32.exe /s /u wintrust.dll
start /wait regsvr32.exe /s /u initpki.dll
start /wait regsvr32.exe /s /u dssenh.dll
start /wait regsvr32.exe /s /u rsaenh.dll
start /wait regsvr32.exe /s /u gpkcsp.dll
start /wait regsvr32.exe /s /u sccbase.dll
start /wait regsvr32.exe /s /u slbcsp.dll
start /wait regsvr32.exe /s /u cryptdlg.dll
:: Reregister DLL files that are associated with Cryptographic Services
start /wait regsvr32.exe /s softpub.dll
start /wait regsvr32.exe /s wintrust.dll
start /wait regsvr32.exe /s initpki.dll
start /wait regsvr32.exe /s dssenh.dll
start /wait regsvr32.exe /s rsaenh.dll
start /wait regsvr32.exe /s gpkcsp.dll
start /wait regsvr32.exe /s sccbase.dll
start /wait regsvr32.exe /s slbcsp.dll
start /wait regsvr32.exe /s cryptdlg.dll
:: Configure and start the Cryptographic service
%SystemRoot%\system32\sc.exe config CryptSvc start= auto
:: Start the Cryptographic Service
%SystemRoot%\system32\net.exe start CryptSvc
2) Then install MSI Installer 3.1 (WindowsInstaller-KB893803.exe)
3) Run this :
net stop wuauserv
REG DELETE
"HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update" /v

- Windows XP Hardware >> Xp Hardware upgrade helpI was forced to upgrade my motherboard.
I have two hardrives both with xp sp1.
When I upgraded the motherboard windows now keeps on restarting just as it's
starting to load.
this happens with both hard drives, Also in safe mode.
I know that xp doesn't take to upgrades very well, but do not want to
reinstall XP.
Does anybody have any idea what I can do.
Thanks, James.

- Windows XP Network >> Password Protect 1 folderCan you set up a folder to require a password to access
just that folder over a network. When I password protect
an account, you can't access the computer at all on the
network. I want to share a folder, but require a
password to open it over the network. How is this done?
Thanks.

- Windows XP Network >> MSTSC problemI recently updated my firmware in my linksys wrt54g router and then MSTSC
quit working. I keep getting cannot connect to host computer error message.
I've tried rolling back the firmware and still can't connect. Now I've heard
of problems with other linksys products not being able to be configured if
you update the firmware. however I can still make changes to other programs
through my router. do you think this is a router problem. I am using xp pro
on both machines, and RDC use to work until I updated my firmware. What can I
do to try and fix this?

- Windows XP Network >> Windows Explorer slow when not on office LANMy laptop PC is a member of my office domain, with some drive mappings
pointing to the office server shares. When I work at home, any activity
involving the file system (using Explorer or OpenFile and SaveAs dialogues)
takes ages. Apparently it has something to do with the network settings,
because if I disable the home network connection, the problem is gone.
However, I need to be connected to the network at home. Is there a solution?

Please tell me the solution to
remove the hidden adapter.

I want to share the internet in a lan of 30 system .I

- Windows XP >> Quick launchHi,
I've putted my taskbar on the left of my screen.
However, every now and then, Windows reorders alphabetically the icons
on my quick launch, discarding the order that I've built with drag & drop.
I solved this issue renaming alphabetically the .lnk files of my Quick
Launch folder.
But, if I launch "Windows prompt", on the titlebar I see "24Windows
Prompt", where 24 was the number that I give to the .lnk files.
Any way to resolve this?
Thanks

- Windows XP Network >> XP and Domain issueHere's my issue. I have some XP Pro boxes on my domain and
when I go to install the printer I can't browse the
server/directory for the printer. I can install the
printer via IP address but that's not how I initially had
it set up. The other issue is, if I want to make someone a
local admin to the machine I am unable to browse the
directory to add the person. Under location it will only
show the local machine and not my server. All the XP boxes
are doing this but the 2kPro boxes work just fine.
I've checked the knowledge base and it said that file and
print sharing needed to be installed. Uhhhhh.. yeah of
course :) Any other ideas? Oh yeah.. it also takes the XP
boxes forever to log on to the domain.
Much thanks in advance

- Windows XP Security >> My first time - hope it's not a habitThis is my first visit here. I am past annoyed. I'm
nearly paralyzed here. I'm a writer working on deadline,
needing to receive information which SP2 has decided to
block and I really don't have time to stop and learn
their new system. I just want to do my work and wish I'd
known more about this or I would never have
clicked "next" and allowed it to download.

- Windows XP Network >> XP PC can't read share on DOS PCHi
I have a fairly straightforward TCP/IP peer-to-peer network consisting of 6
x MS DOS 6.2 PCs, various Win9x, and a Win XP Pro machine.
Everything was running well until the introduction of the XP machine. The
XP machine simply cannot see shares on the DOS machines, even though they
are alive, well, and being read from / written to by other PCs on the same
network.
If I type NET VIEW from a DOS prompt in XP I am shown a list of the hosts
that it can see on the network, including those running DOS (they're called
CNC1 through CNC6 as it happens). I can't see them in My Network Places.
Drive C on CNC1 through CNC6 is shared without a username or password.
If I try to browse directly to 'c' on, say, CNC6, I get the following
errors:
If I use IP address: \\10.0.11.9\c --> "The network path cannot be found"
If I use host name: \\cnc6\c --> "The network resource type is not correct"
I can ping any of the DOS PCs from the XP machine - no problem there, so it
can't be a TCP/IP related issue.
Any ideas for help gratefully received, especially from those who have come
across this problem before and found a solution to it! MS support site is
no use to me today, I can't find anything relating to this on there.
Cheers
Jake

- Windows XP >> Service not startedXP Pro SP2
Have installed iTunes. When installing, gets to where it needs to start the
iPodServices.exe, but it always fails. This is not an Apple thing, cause the
exact same program installs perfectly on my laptop with same OS. On Install,
get a message "Cannot start service." (iPod). Have tried to manually start
it, but only runs for maybe a minute, then get the windows error message,
"iPodServices.exe encountered a problem and needs to shut down...." ..."do
you wish to send to MS???"
Have tried completely uninstalling, reinstalling, log in as Administrator,
etc. No luck.
Any ideas???
P.S. The iPodservices.exe is not even listed in Services.

- Windows XP >> HELP!!!! Can't get previosly removed NTFS drives recognised by XP again! Please somebody help...
I'm stillrunning Win XP Pro Corp w/SP1 on most of my machines but have
about 15 or so IDE Hard Drives ranging in size from 80Gig thru to 300Gb
that I removed for one reason or another, either when a system crashed
or to connect up directly to another XP Pro machine... and I now can't
get them to be recognised in Wndows Explorer on any XP or W2K system
and in device manager it just states that the drives are there but are
'unformatted' and offer to format the drives!
These are all Data drives with no operating system on them but have an
enormous amount of recorded digital tv data and photo's etc. on them
which I don't want to lose... like several Terrabytes worth... plus
numerous other downloaded programs etc. that were being stored on the
drives!
PLEASE!!!!!!! How can I get the NTFS partition to again be recognised
by Windows XP/SP1? I can't afford to lose that much data , and can't
afford to buy new hard drives to replace them all in order to use
recovery type software to transfer the data across to as I have
CFS/Fibro Mylagia which leaves me housebound in alot of constant pain
and only on a meager $11,000 (Australian Dollars - or approx. $7.500 US
Dollars) to cover everything including all my medical costs, which
includes paying for a carer 12 hours each day.
Is there any cheap way for me to get Windows XP Pro to again recognise
these drives that have a single NTFS partition on each of them and be
able tp use them again without reformatting and losing all my data?
Hoping for an answer...
Linton. (Downunder in Sydney, Australia)
