- Windows XP >> windows updateIf I go into IE6 and click on the windows update in the Tools tab
I get this information on the web page:
Thank you for your interest in Windows Update
Windows Update is the online extension of Windows that helps you get the
most out of your computer.
You must be running a Microsoft Windows operating system in order to use
Windows Update.
The system is xp pro sp1
Does anyone have a way of rectifying this problem?
Thanks for your time

- Windows XP Hardware >> "Cannot Install This Hardware" "Access is Denied"Hi,
I am unable to enable or update drivers for my display adapter (ATI
Radeon X300).
I have tried several alternatives that were posted on the Internet and
have found the problem (I hope so). However I am unable to overcome
this.
I have enabled logging whenever the operations (enabling of the
display adapter OR updating its driver) into a file C:\WINDOWS
\setupapi.log.
I further tried to set a registry value that would enable registry
updates to be logged too. (changing the value of LogLevel to FFFF).
However, this did not have any effect (the log did not contain any
additional information).
All the setupapi.log had was Error 5: Access is Denied
I suspected that there was a problem updating the registry and found
that a set of values under a group named ati2mtag was blocked. Even
though I am an administrator I could not delete or modify the contents
of this group. It denied me access.
I would really appreciate a solution, to make those set of keys
accessible once again.
Thanks in advance.

- Windows XP Support >> How to get Admin password?Im fixing a Compaq pressario laptop for a friend. its got xp home, and
after installing sp2, it gets the blue screen, error stop c0000135 cant
find winsrv
the best I can do is use another winXP cd and get to the recovery console to
try and apply the fix from Microsoft
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=885523#kb4
on deleting registry entries for the sp2, so it can boot.
Apparently while searching for a note about what the password might be, I
find it was sold at comp usa, and they bought a service plan, unconditional.
But guess what? they dont want to offer support, saying I needed to call
Microsoft to ask them what the Administrator password is.
It was setup by comp usa, who apparently setup the admin password. But they
say we would not know what it is and all the data will be destroyed on the
disk because the only way now is to wipe the disk and install everything
again. But I dont have any windowsXP disks, compusa kept them.
Well who cares, you have to buy xp, office, etc, not our problem. Besides,
its too complicated to work thru the registry, thats only for qualified
people, we cant help you, thats like way advanced or something.
Is there any solution?

I keep getting the blue screen with STOP errors...when I
send the error report to Microsoft, they say the error was
caused by a device driver.
The only thing I've changed lately is my printer. I
uninstalled a Lexmark X73 & installed an HP1100, which I
ended up uninstalling also.
Any ideas??

Before, when he opened up I.E. it always opened up on his home page, Google.ca. Now it opens up to Microsoft Home Search (res://krrfa.dll/index.htmlC#96676), he has repeatedly tried to reset it to google.ca but it keeps reverting back to the Microsoft page. Any help would be appreciated in solving his problem, it has never happened om my computer. Thanks

- customize >> Can user and admin have the same IE?Hi,
I'd like to have my user account and Administrator account
basically use the same IE or same IE "browsing
experience", in other words, have the same toolbar menus,
same Favorites, etc.
Similarly, when I install theGoogle Toolbar as Admin, it
is not installed for my user account. Can this be
accomplished?
(It'd be nice if they could have the same Desktop, too,
but one thing at a time - I'd like XP to appear no
different between these accounts.)

Any suggestions appreciated.

- Windows XP Hardware >> help on Serial port support for Win XPWe are in manufacturing of EMC products.
We control our few equipment through computer. We have
used RS232 (COM1 OR COM2) as interface port. We have
developed our own application to run these equipment in
Visual Basic. Some applicaions are developed in older
versions of VB. We also include graphics server as a
supporting application. We have used graphics server 4.0
(which supports 16 bit windows).
Now our problem is when we connect one of these equipment
through RS232 port in Win 95 and Win 98 it works fine and
RS232 responds fine. But when we connect this equipmnt
through RS232 port in Win XP RS232 port slows down and
equipment do not work.
Please help us.

- Windows XP Setup >> Q: Scheduling Defrag (GUI)Hello all.
I want to run the GUI version of Defrag (DFRG.MSC) as a scheduled task,
but it doesn't work as expected:
Running this .MSC from the "Run..." or DOS box works fine. But if I put
"%WINDIR%\System32\DFRG.MSC" as command-line in a scheduled task, it
just hangs there (presumably awaiting input). Either that, or it starts
and exits right away, depending on the syntax I use.
What I want is for it to run automatically -- and -- perform a disk
analysis of C:
I also tried the following construct, but alas...
"%WINDIR%\System32\CMD.exe" /C START "" /B /I
"%WINDIR%\System32\DFRG.MSC"
(with/out "/I" and "/B")
I know I can use "DEFRAG C: /A", but I want the GUI version. Besides, I
tried that too and it still runs invisibly. Annoying.
Anyone know the magic formula?
Thanks!
M.T.
PS: Please answer within thread -- email is a decoy.

This is nothing to do with Windows but everything to do with the clockset
settings in the BIOS. There should be something in the PC manual to tell
you how to enter the BIOS and adjust.

power saving settings.

The front side bus speed is incorrect. Look into your bios and set it for
133. It is probably set for 100 now. This can happen if you shutdown the
computer during the P.O.S.T. It can cause the FSB to reset to a default
value.
Found this out due to my 4 year old Grandson! (-:

Yup yup. My 2500+ always showed up as a 1700+ because of that stupid
FSB. Also, it never hurts to make sure your BIOS is completely up to date ;)

- Windows XP Network >> Connecting to another computerI hope this is the right area to ask this question, but I am not sure where
else to turn. I am having a problem with one computer and I am sure there is
a setting I am missing.
When we do a connection to other computers on our network (all are XP
machines) by going to Start-Run-\\<computer-name>, most of the computers
respond by throwing up the "Connect to <computer DNS >" box asking for a user
name and password. However, I have one machine that just opens up and shows
all of the shared components (files, printers, etc.). When I try to access
any of the shared folders, it always gives me Access Denied. At no time on
when trying to connect to this machine do I get asked for user name and
password.
Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Thanks - John

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> Can only save part of images but all of musicI need some advise. I worked 4 months on a family movie for x-mas. Now that
I have completed the project I went to save the project to either a CD or my
computer. Neither worked!!
I get a variety of problems each time I try. Either I get the error message
that states "Ensure the destination is valid and the origianl source still
exist, make sure there is enough disk space available" (Something like that)
or I will start to save but the estimated time continues to climb until I
eventually cancel. I actually got a CD to burn a few times, but only some of
my pictures were shown the rest were blank, all the music did record.
I have been on microsoft support line for 3 hours and they are now
escallating this case up. I see many people have this type of error but I
don't know what to do to resolve.
Should I cut the video in half and save twice??? I don't even know how to
do that? The total video is only 188MB which is about 22 minutes of images.

- Windows XP Hardware >> PLEASE ANSWER! How to activate UDMA in WindowsXP ?In a same machine I've installed Win98SE and WinXP Pro, 2 hard disks (both
master) and 1 CDROM drive (secondary slave), that supports UltraDMA2.
Win98SE sees UltraDMA in all drives.
WinXP instead set UltraDMA only for hard disks. CDROM drive is set to PIO
Mode!
The WinXP setting for CDROM drive is correctly "Use DMA if available", but
it works in very slow PIO Mode.
Chipset is VIA KX133 of Asus K7V motherboard.
I upgraded CDROM drive to latest firmware.
How can I activate UltraDMA for CDROM drive in WinXP ?
Thank you very much
