- Windows XP >> Solution to: Windows cannot access the specified deviceIf you get the following message:
desktop message: windows cannot access the specified
device, path, or file. you may not have the apporopriate
permissions to access the item.
Try this:
The run32.dll could be corrupt.
Replace the file run32.dll in the folder c:\windows\system32 with a fresh
file Downloaded
from http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?run32
It worked for me.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Windows Task ManagerOn opening task manager the different tabs at the top of
the window for processes etc are not visible, neither are
the minimize, maximise, close buttons. Even when clicking
in the areas where they are supposed to be does nothing
but select the window behind it. The only way I can exit
out of the task manager is to alt+f4 shortcut. I have run
an anti-virus check and my system is clear of virus' yet
the problem persists. Does anybody know of a solution
that does not include formatting my hdd or returning my
pc to factory settings?
Thank you in advance.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> System Restore will not complete a Restore.A few days ago, System Restore stopped working. It runs
through most of the steps and then reports that it cannot
complete.
I have run the System Restore diagnosis tool and found
the following in the files:
In the SR-Rstrlog.txt file, for RP 185, which was my

\Reader\AXEParser.dll, C:\Config.Msi\82c8fd.rbf,

The AXEPArser.dll file exists, but I guess there is a
problem with the previous command Attrib on file
82c8fd.rbf
In the SR-ChgLog.LOG file, there are entries for:
82c8fc.rbf - create, delete, rename, attribute change
82c8fd.rbf - create, delete, rename, attribute change
82c8fe.rbf - create, delete, create
82c8ff.rbf - create, delete, create
Can anyone advise me what the problem is, and is there
any way I can fix it so that System Restore works again?
I am using Norton System Works and the Norton Protected
Recycle Bin. I recall an error message when I was
deleting some files from the Recycle Bin, and wonder if
this is related. I cannot recall the exact details of the
message, sorry.

- Windows XP Hardware >> Using two mouse: one for lefties, one for rightiesI had no problem getting two mouse (mice) to work together on our PC. I'm trying to find out how I can switch the primary and secondary buttons for just one mouse. It will be used by a left-handed person, while the other mouse will be for the right-handed members of the family. Any idea how to apply this setting for a single mouse instead of all connected mouse
Note: our Windows XP has a single user profile, and I do not wish to set up individual profiles for each family member and make them log in and out just for mouse configuration.
Thanks, Ma

- Windows XP Network >> dhcpNodeTypeI inherited a used Toshiba notebook running XP SP2. After endless
fiddling, I still could not get it to show up in my local, home
workgroup comprising four other XP systems (two XP home, two XP Pro). It
was "visible" in My Network Places, but trying to open it always
reported that the network path was unavailble and questioned whether
permissions were set correctly. I finally tracked the problem down after
much newsgroup searching. One of the NetBT parameters in the registry,
dhcpNodeType, was set to "peer to peer," which from what I read means
the machine had been configured for a WINS domain server environment.
(This makes sense; it had been used in a local university network.)
Changing the registry value to 8, "hybrid" solved the problem. (I
checked the other four machines at home and they all reported "hybrid"
for that parameter.) The questiion is: why didn't re-configuring all the
networking settings change this value? I didn't enable WINS name
resolution.

- Windows XP Setup >> Read only shared filesWe have 2 home PCs running XP Home edition and linked by wireless broadband.
Each 'my documents' folder is shared with the other. If I try to open a file
on computer B (for want of a phrase) that is held on the hard drive of
computer A (or vice versa), it will only open as 'read only'. Please can
someone tell me how I change this so I can access files and update them from
the other computer? I've checked that the file isn't saved as 'read only' on
the source PC. I understand from another newsgroup that this is probably a
security permission set by the operating system. Thanks, Sue.

- Windows XP Network >> Odd Extended File Property behavior--____WKNWMIDVXAQZZTAXLAHN____
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1

First the background:
We have a Windows 2003 Server, holding, among other things, about 100,000 =
TIF document files. In order to ensure that our Sharepoint server =
properly indexes the documents, we copy certain of the TIF tag data to =
extended file property fields automatically, as a part of a document =
"check in" process. We use dsofile.dll, downloaded from Microsoft, to =
maintain the extended file properties (which are stored as alternate data =
streams.) (We COULD enter it manually from the summary window of the file =
properties as well.) The summary fields we update include Title, Subject, =
Category, Keywords, Comments, Source, Author, and Revision Number. Each =
file then has at least two alternate data streams, holding the summary =
data and category data.
As a result of this check-in process, we are able to verify tag presence =
simply by looking at the file properties: Summary Tab from any workstation.=
=20
This is the problem: For the last two+ years, we've been running the =
check-in process from several Windows 2000 workstations. As a part of our =
routine PC replacement process, we've recently replaced one of these =
machines with a Windows XP Pro machine. Now, the Windows XP machine =
cannot see ANY of the file property summaries that were entered with the =
Windows 2000 machines, nor can the Windows 2000 machine see ANY of the =
file property summaries entered by a Windows XP machine.
Does anyone have any ideas as to the cause of this, and how we can address =
the problem? Thanks in advance

- Windows XP >> XP Pro(orig) prob HELP! - Sys folders names change after reboots...System:
XP Pro(orig)
AMDxp2100
1gig RAM
When I reboot, sometimes the folder names for (start)>My Computer and
Network(or Neighborhood) are changed to something different.
They appear to be reg key names/data information.
For instance, right now, "My Computer" says "DirectMusicBand"?!?
Another name that has popped up is "MDhcpClass" but they seem to change
with no apparent pattern - I can rename them and they're fine until a
random number of boots.
Also, when I looked at the registry for these keys, I noticed there are
a vast number of entries that are identical except for the number "1" at
the end.
IE: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{79BA9E00-B6EE-11D1-86BE-
00C04FBF8FEF}\ProgID (Default=Microsoft.DirectMusicBand.1)
There is another entry like this but WITHOUT the ".1"
I'm wondering if these are "duplicate" keys and can they be removed
safely?
I've done an XP over-itself repair but no change.
Very strange prob, eh?
(the Recycle bin icon changes too - I've tried most fixes for this but
no joy)
Anybody heard of this sort of thing before? Driving me nuts.....

- Windows XP Network >> seeing other computers on the networkI have a problem that I hope someone can help me with. I am running an XP
system with service pack 2 and all the updates that I can get from the
microsoft update center.
My problem is before I got a trojan that was named xwinupdaterarx.exe I
could see and connect to other systems on my network. Now I can not connect
or even see other systems but I can stil get on the internet. I was
wondering if that trojan modified something that could have caused my problem
or what. I know when I first got the trojan it went into the registry and
disabled the ability for windows updates to work.
I have ran multiple tools to kill the trojan and my virus scan has killed it
but I still have the problem of not finding any systems.
Any help given here would be greatly appreciated and thank you.

- Windows XP Network >> Incorrect modem installsI bought a HP Pavilion notebook and upgraded XP Home to XP Pro. Since then my Conexant 56k ac link modem does not work for internet connections but does for e-mail connections. I uninctalled it then rebooted the notebook at which time it reported it had detected and installed a new modem however it reports it has installed a PCI device. Could this be why I am unable to create a dial-up connection? If so how would I correct this problem? My modem is an internal device and I believe it should not configure as a PCI device. Is this a result of upgrading to Pro? Lots of questions - anyone got any pointers?

- Windows XP Support >> Constant RefreshingMy pointer switches to an hour glass every 5 or so seconds. It seems to be
timed with the usage increase for the System Idle. This is affecting a lot
of things that I do in Microsoft Office.
Outlook - I could be in a month view, and scrolled down a week or two where
the top week is mid-month. When that hourglass shows up, it will
automatically adjust the calendar in Outlook back to the top of the month
that I'm in the middle of.
I'm adding an item into the calendar, it will let me type for a few seconds,
and then when that hourglass shows up, it cuts me off mid-entry and starts
another entry.
In Excel or Word, if I'm doing a print preview, and "show margins"...it will
show them for a few seconds up until when the pointer switches to an
hourglass. If I double click on the clock/calendar in the lower right, and,
say I go forward a couple of months, it will adjust back within a few seconds.
These are just a few of the things that are going on.
