- Windows XP Security >> WFXMSRVRHey,
Sorry if this is already a thread but my ADD and OCD just won't allow me to troll thru 194 different headings...
I am running XP home and just updated to SP2(beta). Seems quite nice, but one prob I am having is with the windows security center. Each time I go online (dial-up) I get a warning about "WFXMSRVR" of which I can ignore, stop, etc. What is this (excuse my ignorance) and what is the best way to deal with it?
PLEASE do me a big favor and just answer to my email address,... I'm not to good w/ newsgroups! Sorry! :>

- Windows XP >> Send To settingsHello, Whenever I right click on a file in Windows Explorer I get a fly out with "Send To" options. Currently there are 9 places that appear when I click on the Send To fly out. None of the places are what I want. I would like to make a few of the places folders that I need to send the file to. Is there a way or place to remove and/or add places to the "SEND TO" Menu so that I don't need to drag and drop the file into a folder everytime I want to copy or move it ???
Thanks in advance

- Windows XP Network >> NetBEUI network-can't 'see' other Workgroup PCs, but Search findsI'm just wondering if any of the recent MS security patches has affected my,
until lately, properly functioning NetBEUI home Workgroup network by making
NetBIOS over TCP/IP(--> Enabled) mandatory (or ?).
I have tested w & w/o my ZA Free 7.0.733.000 pers. s/w firewall (previous ZA
vers have never been an issue (as one would expect for NetBEUI), as I believe
they are only concerned with TCP/IP traffic).
Per PChuck's Network page, I have also examined:
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters\Hidden -->
'Hidden' key does not exist
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa-restrictanonymous -->0
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanManServer\Parameters-RestrictNullSessAccess --> 'RestrictNullSessAccess' value does not exist
My Computer Browser service is set to Automatic but is typically not Started
when examined initially. FYI - the dependenices: Server & Workstation
services are Started and set to Automatic. Even if I manually Start the
Computer Browser service, NetBEUI connectivity is not restored.
Network details:
I'm using NetBEUI for an XP SP2/Win98 home network with Client for Microsoft
Networks and File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks bound to NetBEUI
only.
I have QoS & TCP/IP installed with NetBIOS over TCP/IP-->Disabled (on
purpose).
My ADSL modem connects to a 10Mbps 4-port hub, then to a BEFW11S4 wireless-B
broadband router that has four 10/100 RJ-45 + WAN ports. Port 1 connects to
a 'cascaded' SMC7008BR broadband router (seven 10/100 RJ-45 + WAN ports)
using a CAT5 crossover cable to Port 7 (not the WAN). Both routers support
several PCs.
As my ISP allows 2 dynamic IPs, I connect my main workstation to the 4-port
hub directly using a 10Mbps NIC with only TCP/IP bound and a separate 100Mbps
NIC with only NetBEUI bound which connects to the SMC7008BR and my home
Workgroup network.
The other IP from my ISP goes to the BEFW11S4 and it distributes private IPs
to all other PCs on my home Workgroup network.

- Windows XP Update >> Windows Update KB898461Hi,
I am unable to download the recent update KB898461. I have got automatic
updates configured. When downloading it starts and the comes back with a
message saying update not successful. I have tried downloading the file
directly from the KB Info screen and it starts to backup registry and install
files but then comes back with a set-up cancelled message. I get no error
messages. Do I need to install it ?

- Windows XP Support >> CMI8738 6 channel surround sound problemsI recently purchased a C-media 6 channel surround sound card off ebay.
It didn't come with any drivers, so I downloaded these off the C-media
website (http://www.cmedia.com.tw/?q=en/driver). After installation,
the sound card works, but I only get audio in the front speakers
('audio out'). I get no sound in the rear speakers, or in the
subwoofer/centre speakers.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

- Windows XP Support >> Hard drive crash with no recovery diskMy HD suffered a mechanical failure and I cannot find the system recovery
disk (*&!). The PC had a manufacturer-installed Home edition of XP
(registration number is on the case) and I paid for the Pro upgrade (for
which I have the disks). I'm going to replace the HD and load everything
from scratch, but I don't have XP home disks. The system recovery disk for
my pc (HP pavilion 7955) is nowhere to be found on the web (or at HP)(*&!).
What are my best (least expensive) options for getting and loading an
authentic version of XP home on this new HD?
Thanks!

Windows XP Security >> Locking Specific Folders With A Passord
I want to limit acess to a ceratain folder. I have tried
Hiding but I need more security. Also, Zipping and then
adding a password is not safe. The Zipped Folder Can Be
Deleted. Originals must be kept unprotected. Is there
anyway I can keep my folder and put a secure pass lock on
it without additional software?

Use NTFS permissions to control what
accounts can access and in what ways (like
read but not write/delete). All accounts not
granted any access will have no access.

Windows XP Security >> Locking Specific Folders With A Passord
Greetings --
WinXP's file security paradigm doesn't rely on, or allow, the
cumbersome method of password protection for individual files or
folders. Instead, it uses the superior method of explicitly assigning
file/folder permissions to individual users and/or groups.
HOW TO Set, View, Change, or Remove File and Folder Permissions
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q308418
As a work-around, you can place the file in a compressed folder,
and set a password to uncompress the folder to view/access its
contents.

- Windows XP Security >> Starting XP with user that is not in the Admin group.I can not start Windows XP with a user that is not in the administrators group. I have tired both the user and power user group. This started after I tried to change the security settings in the registry for a program that has to update a registry key when starting up. I do not have a back up. I create a user, joined them to the user group, went in to the registry, found the three entries for the program and added the user group with full control to those keys. This did not work so I went back to the three keys and removed the user group. Now when I try to log on using that user I get the start up sound but nothing on the desktop In task manager the only service I can stop is the taskmgr for the user I am trying to log on. I also can not start a tast through task manager like say Explorer. When using a user that is in the admin group everything works fine. Any ideas? Thanks in advance

- Windows XP >> RPC Disable Now Enabled and computer is sooo SLow HELP??Greetings
I had the NT Authority virus (it restarted my PC every 15 mins).
...................................................................
Scenario
I did the following:
selected the Remote Access Connection Manager with the secondary
mouse button and select Properties. Then set the Startup Type
to "Disabled" and then "Stop" the service. Remember to Apply these
new settings (just click Apply or OK)
Then Went to Remote Procedure Call (RPC). Again go to the Properties
for
this service. I selected the "Log On" tab at the
top of the small window that popped up when Properties was selected.
Now go down to the area labeled 'You can enable or disable this
service
for
the hardware profiles listed below' and click on Profile 1 and
"Disable" this service.
....................................................................
Now I could not manage to enable the RPC services back again, hence I
did it in
Regedit, by going to current control set, servics.
In fact anything that should be accessed through right clicks isn't
working anymore. I cannot run defrag on my machine, my only hope was
to try system restore, and now it is not working. I tried running
Repair in Windows XP
the process stopped at C:\Windows...
Any ideas on how I could fix this?
Cheers

- Windows XP >> IN NEED OF SERIOUS HELP - MANY PROBLEMSFirst of all, I have quite a list of viruses I found on my computer, there all unable to be removed, and have been found and contained by an Avast! Antivirus. I am the host of a wireless network, and am afraid that the viruses can spread to the other computers, is that possible? Here is a list of the viruses I have seen so far.
JS: Ezploit-Bytverify-2 x4
JS: ClassLoader-1
Win32: Kuang2
Win95: Matyas x2
Next, my Microsoft Word still has some problem and shuts down after 50 seconds of being used; I have much to do with this and must have it fixed ASAP.
I also detected some bugs in the registry via Ad-aware 6.0 that couldn't be removed a while ago, but when I scanned today to show in this letter it was gone. Is that possible ether?
I must have these problems addressed as soon as possible, help will be gratefully appreciated. If anyone has any information that can help me with this, or needs more detailed information may email me.

- Windows XP >> Unable to delete read-only folders - access deniedHi,
I've been trying to remove quite a few (>10) read-only folders & their
subfolders by following the workaround instructions found at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/256614, but I'm still unable to remove the
folders.
I created a new registry key UseSystemForSystemFolders and modified the new
value to Type 1 in Registry Editor. Then I tried to use the attrib command
prompt to change the read-only attribute by using attrib -r +s C:\V\Vids. But
it says Access denied.
What else can I do to get rid of these folders? Someone please help me out,
thanks very much in advance!
Sincerely,
Regine

- Windows XP Network >> Upgrade from ME produces no internet and no soundcardHi,
After years of insisting that my Windows ME was just fine to get me what I
needed, I broke down and upgraded after finding out that my school sold XP
pro for $5.
Anyways, the installation was fine, except that now I cannot access the
internet and it says that my soundcard is not installed, though both worked
perfectly with ME.
When I try an autofix with the network (my apartment's T1 line), it
recognizes the server but says that it cannot get the server to send my
computer a new IP address.
Any suggestions?
