- Windows XP Security >> How to Enable Stored User Names and Passwords in XP SP1Hi All,
I have a XP SP1 with a hardened configuration that has disabled stored user
names and passwords (from the manage users control panel app). There is no
"Add" button. Whenever I access a network resource (when I am not logged on
to the domain) I am prompted for U/P, but there is not check box to remember
password.
I assume (perhaps incorrectly) that I can enable this functionality via the
registry. Does anyone have instructions on how to do so?
Thanks,
Scott

- Windows XP Network >> Weird (port-based?) connection/web access problemI can connect to the web with MS:ie6 Ok, but not with ie7 or Firefox. Also
can't connect with Thunderbird or Skype, nor connect to Microsoft to register
new software.
Mail (outlook express) will send (SMTP, port 25), but won't receive (POP3,
port 110) unless I run telnet, port 110 TWICE (yes, once alone won't work) (I
found this by chance when trying a colleague's suggestion). then it's OK.
I connect (when I can) via a direct LAN connection to a 3com wireless ADSL
router with inbuilt firewall.
I have shut down (Zonealarm) firewall and (temporarily, to test) AV software.
I occasionally run Spybot, and have tried checking and fixing Winsock, in
case that was the cause.
Some very clever colleagues are foxed by this. I sense it must be something
to do with ports, which I don't really understand, and I worry that it might
signal some malicious intervention.
I think it all started around the time I accepted an invitation to 'upgrade'
my Skype (which I have now uninstalled), but can't say for sure.
Any suggestions, please?

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Win XP Secutiry UPdate KB908531I have recently installed (4/16/06) a number of Windows Updates. After
completion I notice that there were a couple of problems:
1.) In Windows Explorer the left pane of windows explorer(directory tree)
would only display the 1st level of the directory struture. All lower levels
could be acccessed in the right pane by double clicking on the folder. When
the "+" was clicked int the left pane nothing happened and the hourglass
cursor appaered but never went away.
2.) In IE 6.029 with SP2 web sites could be accessed by selecting from the
list of favorites however, when typing the address in the address bar nothing
happened.
Another rather curious symptom was that on the computer I use at home with 5
users defined - 1 user did not see the above problems, all others did. When I
unistalled one update (KB908531) the problem went away. The other updates
installed at this same time were:
KB890830, KB911567, KB912812, KB911565, KB914454, KB911562
I installed the updates one at a time once I found the problem so I know
that KB908531 is the problem item.
Since I bought Windows thru Dell with my computer I haven't found an easy
way to report this to Microsoft for possible solution (without paying that
is). Has anyone seen/heard or have any understanding of this problem.
If I'm in the wrong discussion group I apologixe in advance. Looking forward
to hearing/reading your commenst

Windows XP >> defrag not removing red
I moved into new office with computers already in place. Running xp pro. I
have tried to defrag but defrag will not remove all the red lines that
indicate fragmented areas and go to blue like defrag usually does. It will
derag only about half the bar and leave half in red. Can anyone tell me why,
and can I fix this. The computer is working fine, but sometimes hangs up a
little.

What does the defrag report say?
The report includes a list of files that remain fragmented
(having two or more fragments).
Do you have at least 15% free space on the drive?

adequately defragment it. Defrag uses this space as a sorting area for file
fragments. If a volume has less than 15% free space, defrag will only

unneeded files or move them to another disk. ]]

Windows XP >> defrag not removing red
Hi Wesley
disk capacity 14.25 GB
Free space 2.8 GB
Free Space 19%
Defrag report showed some files could not be defraged are *.zip and *.exe
files of some programs already in use. I could delete these if my programs
will run OK. Also, largest file is: \undo\Back.cab. What is this and can I
delete it?
Thanks

I have had good success using Power Defragmenter
(http://www.excessive-software.tk/) before using the XP defrag program.
Power Defragmenter is a free GUI for the Contig program from
sysinternals.com. Contig is a command line /file/ defragmenter. By using
this combination, each fragmented file is individually defragmented. The
XP defragmenter than only has to worry about optimizing the file locations
on the hard drive.

I've read it before, and I've heard it several times, but

Yep. I discovered a neat little thing called "Reg Cleaner"
several years ago. I run it daily. Then I stumbled over
SpyBot, and LOVED it about a year ago. Found AdAware Pro,
and loved it. Found SpySweeper (the only thing I've bought
besides Windows XP Pro in awhile.
I was having driver problems, and stumbled upon Driver
Magic. Take that back about buying things! I bought Driver
Magic, and it ate my computer!
Then I found Driver Genius, and LOVE it! It gave me SEVERAL
new drivers, and it was free!
People who tell me they "simply don't download' are running
some piss-poor hardware/software.
There is just so much stuff out there to enhance your
computer!
Someone mentioned "Crap Cleaner" ("CCleaner") the other day.
Now I have that, and it is amazing!
I probably use 10 different things to clean maintain my
computer these days. (I like my system SQUEAKY clean).
And if it even begins to stutter-- mouse is erratic, a
keyboard error, that window won't open...
If it won't clean up in an hour or two, it's
Fdisk/format time!
Later!
Good luck!

If you like Spysweeper, you will love Ewido. Since I have been using it,
SpyBot S&D and AdAware rarely find anything and I didn't renew SpySweeper.

- Windows XP Support >> reformat and slave driveI just received the nice news that my registry is corrupt and that Windows
can't start. After some research, I see that with the OEM copy I have, I
have no other choice than to reformat.
My question..the drive itself is fine, it's Windows that has a problem. Can
I install a new hard drive, install Windows on that, then install the
original drive as a slave so that I can retrieve my files. I know, should
have backed up more often.
Will that work, and are there any special procedures other than setting the
jumper to slave and restarting Windows so that it will recognize the new
drive?
Thanks!

- Windows XP Network >> Out of room on my D: driveMy laptop is partitioned in two drives, C: (6.53 gig
capacity, used 3.59 gigs) and D: (21.4 gig capacity, used
20.6 gigs).
Odd thing is, if I actually add up the contents of the
folders on D:, their total is just under 4 gigs. I only
reformatted and reinstalled everything last week and I
have very little in the way of files on this machine. I
have had to do about 15 system rollbacks (restores?) in
the past 24 hours and I'm wondering if (and where) XP has
dumped all the extra files (and can I delete them???)...
Any clues how I can lighten things to 4 Gigs again, I'd
hate to have to reformat...
thanks.

- Windows XP Hardware >> Computer Shuts off Randomly! Please someone help!
My computer keeps shutting itself off, i don't mean shut down its like the
power cuts out. Some time in won't do it for days and then it will do it 2-3
times in one day.
I tried reinstalling xp but it won't let me, it gets to the F8 I AGREE page
or a bit further then cuts out. I have tried reinstalling 20times and same
thing happens.
I tried different ram but that didnt make a difference.
Some please im going mad with this.
Specs are:
AMD athlon 1700
512RAm
128mb Nivida graphics
Win XP SP2
I know it can't be overheating as i can leave it off for days and then turn
on to install xp and it will turn off even though its only been on a minute.
Also the heatsink fan and power supply fans are working fine plus i have 3
extra fans and the side of the case is off.

- Windows XP Support >> USB Problem...HELP!hi all, i have a very frustrating usb issue. out of the blue my ipod
stopped working on my computer. at first i assumed its was a itunes/ipod
issue. but then i realized that other usb devices were not working either.
strange thing is my mouse and keyboard are usb. i tried swaping ports. mouse
and keyboard work anywhere. but my ipod and my western digital external hard
drive don't work anywhere.
i have windows xp sp2 with all current updates. i've tried disabling ports
,deleting drivers and rebooting amungst many other suggestions. now i should
mention that i have a second pc with xp home and all current updates and
these devices work fine. on my main pc i get a usb error that reads : USB
DEVICE NOT REGCOGNIZED
one of the usb devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and
windows does not recognize it. under device manager both devices just
show up as unknown device. now this morning a idea hit me and i
thought i was on to somthing. i hooked up my ipod and my external drive to
my second pc. went to device manager and looked at what driver windows used
for those two devices.
both of them used USBSTOR.SYS . so i figured i could just manually pic
that driver. wrong! on my main computer when i try and pic the driver i go
as far as
C:\windows\system32\drivers\..thats it the only thing that shows up is two
folders
entittled disdn & etc. so i tried to just manually type in the driver i
wanted alone with its directory, just as it was written on my other computer
and that didn't work either. and to top it off i found a thumb drive and it
works fine! so i went into device manager and checked out what driver windows
used for the thumb drive. guess what the little piece of s*@# was using
USBSTOR.SYS so i am stumped. if you mangaed to read this far and have any
suggestions.. it would be greatly appreciated

- Windows XP Hardware >> Sudden loss of soundHi...my system has been functioning great for 3 years now, I have a Compaq
Presario 5310us system with 40 Gif HD and 256 RAM, I have XP Home Edition
and over a month ago updated to SP2 with no problems.
About a week ago ( I can't remember what I was doing when it happened) my
speakers made weird screaming , popping and squelching sounds. I muted the
speakers. I don't know when the sound went out. My husband swears he heard
game sounds when I was playing Red Faction a few days ago. I went to play
today and no sound. I haven't really noticed the sound being gone until
today ( I tune the system sounds out I guess).
I have checked Devices, drivers, and everything says enabled and working. I
disconnected the speakers and tested them with other audio equipment and
they work fine. I don't know where else to look. Nothing has changed, there
are no new programs, I run virus checks and spyware checks every few days. I
don't know why the sound has just stopped working.
Any suggestions?
( I did delete Yahoo downloaded chat software last week, it's the only thing
I can think of even remotely connected to sound changes)

- Windows XP Hardware >> Adaptec 1200A ATA RAID Card and File CorruptionI am asking this question to the community because I was
unable to find an answer on Adaptec's web-site. A couple
weeks ago, I installed a new pc, running xp pro, 1GB Ram,
my main hard drive is a 80GB Western Digital Caviar with
8MB cache, I have a second hard drive that is a 40GB WD,
not doing anything yet, it's idle. I have an ADAPTEC
1200A Raid card with 2 WD 80GB JB 8MB hard drives
attached. One is attached to channel a and the other is
attached to channel B. I have the raid device set up a
drive which is labeled as "G" Anyway, yesterday, I tried
opening a few files and noticed that they cannot open, I
get a message indicating that the files and directory
structure is corrupted and to run chkdsk. I go to
hardware manager, etc. and I am not able to run chdksk on
the raid device.....any ideas as to how to solve this
corruption problem? and how to run chkdsk or equivalent on
a raid array?
thanks in advance.

- Windows XP Network >> possible to bind user account to domain or workgroup?Hello,
I use my laptop on my home network and at work. At home I
use a wireless NIC and connect to a workgroup. At work I
use my integrated ethernet NIC and connect to a domain.
I'd like to be able to choose at the login screen which
domain or workgroup I want to login to. What I have to do
right now is login to the local computer, switch from
workgroup to domain, and reboot just to login where I
want to login.
At the login screen you can switch between domains IF you
are on a domain. That would work fine if my home
workgroup could be listed there as well.
Any hel would be great. Thanks.
