- Windows XP Support >> XP Pro driversI have a sony Mavica dig camera, i can download pictures on my laptop that is
using XP home, but not on tower that is using XP Pro. The camera seems to
start connecting and is given a drive letter, however if I select that drive
I get the message "G:\ is not accessible -- incorect function". When the
camera is connected both XP Pro and XP home list 6 commonn drivers. XP Home
but not XP Pro, list dvmcdb.sys, pwd_2k.sys. XP pro but not XP home lists
InCDPass.sys and InCDRm.sys. Should I copy the drivers used by XP Home over
to the XP Pro?? Or is there a setting in XP Pro I need to change?? The
install software for the dig camera is incompatable with XP so the downloaded
drivers came from microsoft.

- Windows XP Basic >> phantom emailsHi,
Can someone please explain to me exactly how to stop my log on screen from
telling me I have 1 unread email? I most definitely do not have ANY unread
emails in ANY folder. I realise I could just learn to live with it, but it's
very irritating!

- Windows XP >> UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUMEHad a power failure yesterday and when I rebooted I got the "sorry you
have a problem" screen followed by the UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME screen.
I could not go anywhere!
I called DELL tech support and did the following which resolved the
problem:
1) Installed Windows XP istallation disk into cd drive
2) Started computer and pressed F12 during startup
3) Select option #4 IDE.... followed imediately by hitting any key
4)Push key "R" at next command
5) At "C" prompt Type: CHKDSK /R (space between K and front
slash)
6) This test/repair take approx 45 minutes
7) upon completion, type "exit"
My computer rebooted and all was repaired, no files/data lost.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Update destroyed my system ( temporarily)I make a habit of Updating Windows XP whenever a new
security issue is known. I installed the newest update (
August 2004) on the date of this message. Everything
appeared OK but when I attempted to turn on the computer
the next day all the Icons on the desktop were gone. I
restored to a point before the Update and It is now ok.
Should I reinstall this update? Was it the cause of this
issue? Does the update survive even the restore? I lost
time and productivity repairing this.

- Windows XP Support >> CPU Usage Peaks at >95% upon switching usersI have what I hope is a simple problem. I have Windows XP Professional.
When one person logs off the computer and another person logs on, the
explorer.exe peaks at greater than 95% when viewed from the windows task
manager, thus slowing down all other applications when using the computer.
The only way I found to stop this is physically turn off, then turn on the
computer... which has become an annoyance. However, recently I have needed
to turn the computer off and on several times so explorer.exe does not go up
to almost 100% CPU Usage. Does anyone have any suggestions to solve this
problem?

ICS . I need to open the following TCP Port 6801,6801 and
UDP port 6801 for my VOIP equipment.

- Windows XP Setup >> Welcom screen gone...I just reformatted my HD and re-installed XP Pro. In the
process I inadvertently set it up for a domain (because I
had been installing XP at work and that's what I do
there!). But this computer is at home and not on a
network.
Now, I cannot get the welcome screen to come up and it
appears to be because I'm "assigned" to a domain. How do
I undo that?
(The welcome screen is the opening window that shows all
the users with their little icons and you pick which one
to logon.)

- Windows XP >> Hiding folders from other users...Is there any way to hide folders (better yet, entire drives) from other
users on the same XP machine. Windows says that you can only hide folders in
the "your documents" folder on an NTFS partitioned drive. Is there any way
around this? perhaps third party software...

- Windows XP >> dpvsetup error when running voice setupi found an old article that has the exact problem i'm
having but it just states to turn up the hardware
excelleration for the voice output. I can't go any
higher. Upon reinstalling windows xp pro it fixed the
problem. Then i downloaded all the service packs and
such and not AGAIN i have the same problem. I always get
error code 80004005 after the message. It has disabled
my mic with voice programs and i do not wish to reinstall
xp again because i do not know which update breaks it for
me. I have tried several sound cards but that doesn't
seem to be the problem, cause i get the same error no
matter what i'm using. Any ideas?

- Windows XP Update >> WindowsXP fails to start after Automatic UpdateIn the afternoon of 2006-04-13 the download manager installed new updates. I
delayed the restart until evening, whereafter WindowsXP failed to start (both
"services.exe" and "lsass.exe" with "Application Error: The application
failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005).").
When looking at WindowsUpdate.log it seems as the following updates were
downloaded: KB911565, KB912812, KB890830, KB911562, and KB908531.
Is there any way to either
- undo/uninstall the updates or
- fix the problem
from within the console after booting with the setup CD and choosing the
repair option?

- Windows XP Hardware >> Duplicate USB Floppy Drive LetterI recently purchased a Imation USB 3.5 Floppy Drive.
After rebooting, Win XP assignes a duplicate Drive
letter "A". If you use the Win XP Icon to remove
hardware, when you plug the drive back in, it either
fixes the problem or creates a driver letter "B".

- Windows XP Support >> deleting logical disk using disk managementi would like to use disk management to delete my D: drive which is listed as
a logical drive and has most of the hard disk space. to the best of my
knowledge, I did not set it up this way. If I delete it, will my computer
just recognize drive c with all the hard disk space available? Basically, C
drive has 14 G space with 11 G used, the D: drive has approx 36 G of Free
space. Wanted to burn a dvd and kept getting error that there wasn't enough
space .... i'm assuming that the program was looking for space on the c
drive. I needed 5 G space and only 3 G was available on C. Can anyone help,
i'm a novice and just wanted to use dvd burn to copy my movies. any insight
will be appreciated. Thanks All.

Windows XP >> Auto printers in the printer section
Hi,
When you connect a Windows XP System to a network you start getting printers
with Auto in front of them. Some are good and show as connected others
don't work.
1: Why do they show up
2: How do you stop them from showing up on the PC
3: I assume that you can just delete them and connect to your printers
normally

- Windows XP Support >> Backup DefragmentI backup my C Drive to an external hard drive weekly. When I use
defragment/analyze I'm told it needs defragmented. I run the defragment and
when it completes the report says that all of the files in the backup could
not be defragmented. What would the effect of the fragmented backup file(s)
be if I needed to restore from the backup? Is there a way to defragment these
files that I'm not aware of?

Have a malfunctioning Windows XP SP2 "search function".
At some point in the search it will become stuck in a sub
folder. When the stop button is clicked the program will not stop.
Use Ctrl-Atl-Delete and stop process, program window will go but the
Explorer.exe will continue (50% + cpu use). Need to reboot to stop.
Used sfc /scannow. Did not change search behavior.
No other known problems.

- Windows XP Security >> reboot loop??My mother just called me, and their XP Home is caught in
a logon loop. 1. they never had to logon before..they
only have the one profile, and since installing xp,
they've never had a logon screen. Suddenly, this logon
screen comes up...when they click on the one profile (no
psswrd on it) explorer starts up, then boots them back
out to the logon on screen (says loggin out, saving your
settings, etc.)
This happens over and over and over...and they can't get
into windows.
I've had my father load in safe mode...it won't load with
safe mode w/networking...only safe mode. another funny
thing is the computer will load up in safe mode under
Administrator...but not under his profile. So I had him
add a new profile...still doesn't work...had him go into
msconfig...turn off everything but required
services...still doesn't work.
I told them they *must* have changes something recently,
and they said the only thing they did was perform a
security update from MS. So next I had them do a system
restore to before that update...still doesn't work.
I'm at a loss...anyone heard of this or hopefully have
some suggestions/answers?

Have random clients on the network pick up an old dns ip address of
192.168.1.6. This setting overrides all other settings to define dns servers
such as dhcp server options, dhcp scope options and suprisingly GPO (domain).
Don't understand why these clients are pcking up this old dns IP even when
scope tions and GPO specify main DNS server (192.168.1.8).
NO DNS/DHCP services runniong on 192.168.1.6.
Not sure what puts this entry on the registry, under local
machines,software,polcies, microsoft,windowsnt,dnsclient ?
Tried to run gpudate on XP SP2 machines but they hold onto the 192.168.1.6
address inn registry under dnsclient key even though GPO specify 192.168.1.8.
This part of the GPO doesn't seem to work if there is data under this key
(DNSClient)
Any help please

automatically wants to install to drive ' C: '. I have another drive, drive '
D: ', and was wondering if there was any way to make it so whenever i want to
install something it's default install drive is drive ' D: '.

need expert help.
I'll try to make the details short, as I am not a novice. I am running an
ECS D6VAA with dual PIII 933's, the board has an onboard second IDE
controller, a Highpoint HPT370. I am running win xp pro SP2 embedded. This
is my old board, I have already migrated everything to a PD 805, but now want
to use the old one as a server. I have the orignal MB CD, and have d/l every
other driver known to man, every where all over the world.
My problem is that I can't get my current (validated) install of windows to
load the driver for the HPT370. the sessage I get while trying is:
"The driver installation file for this device is missing a nessessary
entry. This may be because the INF was written for Windows 95 or later.
Please contact your hardware vendor"
OK, the board I mentioned is no longer supported by ECS, however I have had
this board and onboard HPT370 working before with about two or three previous
intalls of win xp pro.
Another curious thing is that the bios sees the controller, the controller's
bios sees the drives, and when I boot from a CD, namely a Western Digital
Data Lifeguard CD, it will see the controller, and give me the names I gave
these drives when they were active on this MB before.
So, in closing, are there any REAL pros out here, or do I have to take my
chances with re-installing from my OEM disk and have a "too many activation"
message, or should I just go ahead and install Linux and say to heck with it?
p.s. Yeah, I wanna try Linux, but wanted to get it all working with win b4

- Windows XP >> monitor not powering on during bootjust installed 64 bit, installed motherboard drivers..video drivers..then
restarted..installed updates..restarted.. now my monitor will not turn on,
the computer boots, i can hear it go through everything but i have no visual
on my monitor, i tried a different monitor, i checked everything to make sure
it was plugged in. does anyone have any suggestions?

- Windows XP >> Computer turns on by itself when the phone rings.A friend just got a new pc. The computer can be
completely shut down but when he uses the phone or
receives a call the computer will turn on. I am
suspecting the fax program but haven't been to check out
the configuration. Does anyone have any suggestions? I
think he is running XP.

When one of our machines sends an email, and if the email is over maybe
1 mb it stays in the outbox and send multiple copies of the mail.
I had this once before and somehow i altered some time out settings but
can not remember what I did.
Has anyone any idea if this is a Outlook issue or an XP issue and how
to solve it.
We are on adsl
