- Windows XP Security >> Remote Attacker?I was using my computer off-line when the phone rang and through my speakers
I heard the modem pick-up & a computer/fax signal.
(I have a Dell Win. XP SP-2, with a dial-up connection and CA eTrust
Personal Firewall.)
When I checked the eTrust logs, I found that several inbound communications
had been blocked including two attempts made (at about the same time as I
heard my modem pick up) originating from DNS source:
"dedicated67.fastcolocation.net".
I was concerned when I heard my modem respond without my log on.
Apparently, the etrust firewall blocked it, but why was another computer able
to call my machine and have it pick-up the phone? Is this a symptom of a
greater security threat?

- Windows XP Network >> WindowsXPWhen I log onto AOL, I am getting poppups continually.
Internet Explorer keeps coming up and I am getting others
and I am wondering if there is a fix or a Web page to
browse through for answers. Am tired of trying to look up
something or try to read while on-line and trying to deal
with these problems. I have tried AOL pop up blockers and
does not seem to fix this problem. Thanks for your time
and help. I have seen ads for downloading products that
will fix the problem but am not sure if this is a good
idea or what exactly to look for. Thanks again.

- Windows XP >> Cleaning Out Temp FilesHello,
When cleaning out temp files from my system, should I clear both the Temp
folder in Documents and Settings and the one in the Windows folder?
Are there any other temp or other files that should be cleaned out

- Windows XP Support >> Computer Startup?I recieved a request from a family member to help fix thier computer. The
problems simple, but the awnsers alludes me.
Each time the computer starts up (after the boot title and the WIN XP splash
screen)
The computer just resets itself. I've tried to access safe mode and the
command prompt, but to no avail. Each time I try to acces any part of the
WIN XP components it just resets it self over and over again.
I have the windows recovery console and used both virus/spyware tools along
with diagnostics but nothing. I even got desperate and use advance "bootcfg"
and "fixboot" among others. I gave up and reformated the hard drive and
reset the bios three times after I thought the problem was resolved, but
after only three or four days the same thing happens again.

- Windows XP Update >> NetscapeI am trying to download your free netscape navigator 7.2 download and it
gets to a certain point in the download with this error message:
"Setup has encountered a network problem and has paused the download.
If you've just lost your connection, please click Resume once your network
has been
reestablished". I've never lost my connection and everytime I hit Resume
I get this message again. What is the problem?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
When replying I need step by step instructions on what I need to do. don't
just say for example "That's usually a profile-related problem - dig around
in your
C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\ directory for the profile and rename it.
Or run Netscape's profile Manager and create a new one".
In this case, what profile? How would I run Netscapes profile's Mgr.?

- Windows XP >> stop laptop suspending when battery gets lowHi,
I have a sony TR5 laptop which is about 3 years old now. Although the
battery will last a good 2 hours, the battery meter drops to 0% after about
1/2 that time.
That's not a problem in itself - I've seen it on other laptops before. I
simply went on to the "alarms" section of the power control panel and made
sure that it didn't hibernate when the battery level goes below 3%. I have
to suffer the occasional unexpected shutdown when the battery actually runs
out but I can live with that.
That was fine until I reinstalled windows XP and now the PC always
hibernates when it thinks the battery is low i.e. after an hour, regardless
of how I configure the low battery alarms.
is there something else that is taking priority over these settings. It's a
PITA only being able to use 1/2 the battery life of the laptop.
TIA
Andy

- Windows XP Support >> FAST helpI did a backup with the FAST wizard and now want to restore the data to
a new computer. The 2 systems are connected with an ethernet cable and
on my old system I selected the folder with the *.dat files that are my
backup. When I started the transfer it started re-compressing the
files in my user account folders.
How do I transfer the files since they are already backed up and
restore them on the new computer?
Thanks!!

- Windows XP Support >> Finalizing my DVD-RW in Easy CD CreatorHi everyone! First time here, hope to get some answers.
I'm saving picture and video files on separate DVD-RWs. I have Easy CD
Creator 5x basic that came w/ the computer and updated it with the patch
5.3.5.10_basic. I pulled my first DVD from a year ago out and added pictures
onto it from this year's trip. Original files were there as expected and
additions were no problem. Secondly, I started a 2nd disc of all video wmv
files. I filled that one to the hilt and do not wish to add to what little
room is left.
My settings are set thusly: "The selected Record Method finalizes the
session. The CD itself is not finalized so additional sessions can be added
later. To change this setting click options."
Actually, this is the setting I prefer, but in the case of the second disc,
it's full for me now and if I wish to possibly play it on my DVD player it
needs to be finalized.
Problem is, this option isn't available (appears all faded-out) when I click
on file, and appears the same to the lower right when I'm looking at disc
properties. Only real option in bold black at these times is ERASE, and I
don't want to do that! The discs play great on my computer, all material is
recognized, etc., but this inability to finalize has me confused. Certainly
in theory, a RW disc by its nature will never be truly finalized. Is that
what's holding things up? I do believe I should be able to finalize these,
true?
As for now, I feel good having these files backed up, playable, etc., just
would like to possible have the option of popping them into my relatively new
DVD player.
Thanks a bunch,

Just a guess, but did you archive it? Try the Outlook Help and Archive.

Did you somehow set automatic archive? Go to tools-options-other. Also do
a help search for -archive-.
The data is probably still there. You just need to restore it.

- Windows XP Setup >> Corrupt WinXPHome startup files; Ways to RecoverProblem:
When starting up WinXPHome Toshiba laptop, it keeps going
around in circles between WinXP Welcome screen and
rebooting. I believe that some start-up files have been
corrupted.
History:
During a SVCPak1 installation from CDROM while on battery
power, the battery power ran out (my wife couldn't find
her AC power cord) and the computer shut down during the
installation. I believe she probably tried to restart it
a few times, but there wasn't enough battery power left.
Upon finding AC power cord, she observed symptoms listed
above when restarting.
Same Welcome Win -> Reboot cycle occured when I had her
try to start up in SafeMode or Last Known Config.
She called CompUSA Tech Support which came with computer
purchase and they basically told her that she either
needed a full copy of WinXP to recover or she would need
to use her Tohsiba Recovery Disk which would result in
her loosing all of her data. One problem is that since
the computer was purchased with WinXPHome on it, it
didn't come with the actual WinXPHome installation disks.
Questions:
1. I also have a Toshiba laptop running WinXPProf
(different laptop model than the hers). Can I create
some kind of recovery disk that would help her boot up
her system and repair the corrupted files?
If the WinXPHome recovery disk thing will work, I also
have access to someone running WinXPHome on their desktop.
If this will work, how do I create a WinXP recovery disk
and is it computer manufacturer independant?
2. My copy of WinXPProf is an upgrade copy. Would this
upgrade installation disk be able to help her out or do I
need an actual WinXPHome installation disk to make things
work?
Is there any cross licensing issues that I would need to
be concerned with if I did this [Both copies are licensed
but to different computers]
3. Any other suggestions? Was the CompUSA guy correct
when he told her that the Toshiba Recovery disk would
wipe out all of her data if she were to run it, as a last
resort?
Thank you and sorry for the length of the post!

- Windows XP Support >> How do you delete an Old OS in a Dual OS machine?I have two operating systems in my computer. W 98 and W XP Home. This is
because I upgraded my system from W 98 to W XP.
I have my system Hard drive set up, where I have two partitions (C & D). W
98 is located in Drive C which is formatted as FAT32 and W XP home is in D
formatted as NTFS. Now, when I boot up my system, it goes thru an initial
Black screen asking me which OS do I want to boot with, and I always pick XP.
This has been a bit annoying but I have learned to ignore it. However, it
does slow down the initial start up process.
My question is can I delete W98 from my machine since I don't need it anymore?
What is the best way to do this?
Can I just go to the C Drive and delete the Windows folder?
I am concerned that if I delete W98, there may be some shared folders that
might be needed for W XP to operate properly. I am concerned that my computer
will not boot up or work properly after the deletion of W 98.
All comments and advises are welcome.
Best regards,
Frank

- Windows XP >> "Windows Genuine Advantage...." System Update?Just re-imaged my home PC and a Windows update that I've been
avoiding all year slipped through.
Something like "Windows Genuine Advantage something-or-other"
Just the name sounds ominous to me - practically pegs my BS

Am I worrying over nothing?
Can anybody elucidate?
