- Windows XP Network >> DNSClient in registryHi All,
Have random clients on the network pick up an old dns ip address of
192.168.1.6. This setting overrides all other settings to define dns servers
such as dhcp server options, dhcp scope options and suprisingly GPO (domain).
Don't understand why these clients are pcking up this old dns IP even when
scope tions and GPO specify main DNS server (192.168.1.8).
NO DNS/DHCP services runniong on 192.168.1.6.
Not sure what puts this entry on the registry, under local
machines,software,polcies, microsoft,windowsnt,dnsclient ?
Tried to run gpudate on XP SP2 machines but they hold onto the 192.168.1.6
address inn registry under dnsclient key even though GPO specify 192.168.1.8.
This part of the GPO doesn't seem to work if there is data under this key
(DNSClient)
Any help please
Thanks

- Windows XP Support >> Backup DefragmentI backup my C Drive to an external hard drive weekly. When I use
defragment/analyze I'm told it needs defragmented. I run the defragment and
when it completes the report says that all of the files in the backup could
not be defragmented. What would the effect of the fragmented backup file(s)
be if I needed to restore from the backup? Is there a way to defragment these
files that I'm not aware of?
Thanks for the help.

made a 7.5 min. clip of a party. File is about 24MB.
I tried to zip it and it barely makes a dent in the size. Seems I can not
email anything larger than 20MB. Is there a way to cut this file by maybe
25% or so? File was created w/Windows Movie Maker on XP Pro. sp2. w/Vz. as

- Windows XP Security >> reboot loop??My mother just called me, and their XP Home is caught in
a logon loop. 1. they never had to logon before..they
only have the one profile, and since installing xp,
they've never had a logon screen. Suddenly, this logon
screen comes up...when they click on the one profile (no
psswrd on it) explorer starts up, then boots them back
out to the logon on screen (says loggin out, saving your
settings, etc.)
This happens over and over and over...and they can't get
into windows.
I've had my father load in safe mode...it won't load with
safe mode w/networking...only safe mode. another funny
thing is the computer will load up in safe mode under
Administrator...but not under his profile. So I had him
add a new profile...still doesn't work...had him go into
msconfig...turn off everything but required
services...still doesn't work.
I told them they *must* have changes something recently,
and they said the only thing they did was perform a
security update from MS. So next I had them do a system
restore to before that update...still doesn't work.
I'm at a loss...anyone heard of this or hopefully have
some suggestions/answers?
thanks

At some point in the search it will become stuck in a sub

Use Ctrl-Atl-Delete and stop process, program window will go but the
Explorer.exe will continue (50% + cpu use). Need to reboot to stop.
Used sfc /scannow. Did not change search behavior.
No other known problems.
Appreciate assistance.
Thank You.

- Windows XP Security >> Copy user profile disabled?I have a brand new XP prefessional system. When I first started it, I
created a user account, say ua. By default, it is administrator. Later, I
created another two accounts: ub and uc, both are administrator. I try to
copy ua's profile to ub account. I log in as uc, then go to Control Panel --
System -- Advanced, then click Settings for "User Profiles". In the opened
"User Profiles" window, I see 4 user profiles stored in this system:
Administrator, ua, ub, and uc.
When I select Administrator or ub profile, the button "Copy To" is enabled
and I can copy its profile to other account. However, when I select ua
profile, the button "Copy To" becomes disabled. So, I cannot copy ua's
profile to account ub although I logged in as user uc that is the
administrtor.
I tried to create more accounts, and found that only the very first account
created during the initial starting process of the brand new system is always
disabled in profie copy.
Can somebody explain why? I really want to copy the first account's profile
to a new account including all the data and settings (like word macro,
outlook account and data etc.). How to do it?
Thanks!

Windows XP Support >> hp 700 series
We have a HP 720 working under Windows XP --- We spent a lot of time on the
HP web site getting the CORRECT drivers so that all features of the HP 720
would work properly.
HP is adament (sp?) about following their very specific procedure when using
the 700 series printers with Windows XP, 2000 or NT.
GO to their web site first and see if they can help resolve the problem.

Windows XP Support >> hp 700 series
I'm having the same problem. I just updated my Java platform and the printer
seemed to stop working right after that.
Scanner Failure and it says turn machine off then on again.
That didn't work.
When I reload the software, I get a message about Java Virtual Machine
during the install.
I went to HP home page and it said I needed MSJVM to install printer.
Went to Java home page and looked for MSJVM. It said if I didn't have it,
to download it.
I started to download it and it said I already have it.
Checked with Microsoft Java Virtual Machine diognostic tool. It said I
didn't have MSJVM.
I don't have MSJVM in my IE Properties anymore.
Do I need to have MSJVM to load the HP 750 all-in-one printer? It seems as
if I do.
If the printer needs MSJVM in order to load and I don't have it, how do I
get it? Obviously, upgrading to Jave to 5.0 did something to remove MSJVM.
Bottom line: Do I now have to purchase another printer that doesn't rely on
MSJVM to run?
Am I confused?
I'd say.

Windows XP Support >> hp 700 series
Hello Michael BN:
I remember having a ton of trouble with the JVM updates on both my Windows
98 and Windows 2000 machines, but not on my XP machine.
Just a word of caution here:
Have you installed all of the updates, etc. from Microsoft's Windows Update
site?
Be sure you are up-to-date before updating any componentry or softwares!!
My experience with using Windows XP and any peripherals that are older in
design (like my HP 720c Deskjet all in one printer, scanner, fax); is that
whenever I do cetain updates or install new software, I would often encounter
a problem with the printer in some manner, causing me to have to uninstall
the darn thing (the printer) and ther re-install it again.
This furiates me as I lose any data saved in the HP folders like my fax
address book and previous saved fax data. (So I am smarter and wiser now and
keep those critical files elsewhere and also I unplug the printer from the pc
whenever installing any new now - also - HP isn't much help under these
pretenses as they do not want to have to tell you your printer needs a tomb
and you need a new printer - so they give you a run around about
un-installing and re-installing your printer to solve the problem-s-!)
Nonetheless, this seems to work for me:
But please make sure your Windows Updates are current!
dump whatever you have already downloaded and restart the pc.
-Repeat the update download or install -- AND -- be certain to re-start the
computer immediately to follow.
----if a problem develops----
1st:
Re-start the pc in SAFE-mode ...this is bit tricky, you have to be
repeatedly tapping on the F8 key while the machine is restarting, if it goes
to normal mode, you missed it, you have to do it again and be sure you are on
that F8 key pronto!
Just the mere action of starting in SAFE MODE sometimes "cures" your problem;
if not... then: (while you are in safe mode) go to the device manager (right
-click:"My Computer", "Properties", "Hardware")
scroll down to the PORTS and seelct the ECP (or lpt port) and right click -
and then select from the tabs at the top "Driver" and then select "Re-Install
Driver".
Then re-start your computer (let it go to normal mode).
Still have a problem?
(2nd:)
Try uninstalling the printer (be sure to do this from the Device Manager -
see steps to get there noted above) and re-start the computer ...
The re-start should activate the Wizard to finding new Hardware and let it
re-install the printer.
If the Wizard does NOT find "New Hardware" - re-start computer by doing a
complete "Shut Down".
Let the Wizard install the drivers (do not use your disk), because XP's
drivers should be correct by now -
If you do use your disk, then be sure to visit Hewlett Packards web site to
get the latest driver download (if there is one!)
Hope that helps.
But I am inclined to think that you should not be having problems if all
your Windows Updates and Browser updates are complete.
