- Windows XP MovieMaker >> movies are not loading from camcorderI have a JVC GR-D33U mini dv camcorder and an E-Machine T3085. I am running
XP home with service pack 2 and all current updates are loaded from
Microsoft. I am tring to download a movie from my camcorder and Moviemaker 2
is not downloading the movie. The software recognizes the camcorder because I
can control the camcorder with the software. I get nothing in the preview
window of the software and when I try to save it after the tape has finished
running it tells me there was an error and the movie did not upload properly,
check the configuration of the camcorder or the software. I cannot find any
help online for this.
Any ideas?????

- Windows XP Support >> could be virus?my friend has windows xp home on an HP computer. recently, she is not able
to sign in as system administrator, the page that usually shows user accounts
only has one account and should have 4. I understand that the administrator
account cannot be deleted but it appears that it has, so maybe a virus? She
is unable to add programs (virus programs, i.e. McAfee) because only the
administrator is able to do this. She cannot run System Recovery to reset.
Can anyone help with this?

- Windows XP Hardware >> USB Storage Device Problem - Help!My daughter has a PQI (I think!) USB "Intelligent Stick" 64 mb Memory
device - basically an external pen memory - for school use. I cannot get
Windows XP to recognise this, despite downloading the driver from the PQI
site, and asking Windows to scan for it. In theory it should simply
recognise it as an external storage device in My Computer, but it does not.
Any suggestions??
Thanks in advance.

I overclock like the dickens so I can't protest too much, but sometimes
overclocking will illuminate problem areas. I have the hardware under
control and have researched several discussions (mainly those of ignorant
overclockers like myself) to no firm resolution.
My question here is -- is there a known bug in windows XP home edition sp2
that may be partially responsible?
Also, I have all the settings right to create mini-dumps but rarely will a
blue screen create a mini-dump and when it does it overwrites an older one.
I use windbg to analyze a dump, that being the extent of my knowledge on the
use of windbg.

- Windows XP Security >> Microsoft Warns of PowerPoint AttackMicrosoft Warns of PowerPoint Attack
"narramissic writes to let us know about yet another PowerPoint flaw, this
one affecting PowerPoint 2000, 2002, and 2003, soon after Microsoft issued
a record number of patches to fix numerous Office vulnerabilities (among
others). The new problem came to light in a blog posting by Microsoft
Security Program Manager Alexandra Huft, but the coverage at ITWorld has
more detail. Huft writes, "We've been made aware of proof of concept code
published publicly affecting Microsoft Office 2003 PowerPoint," and goes on
to say that Microsoft is not aware of any attacks that exploit the bug."

- Windows XP Network >> "TCP/IP CP reported error 2", no LMHOSTS option, no available restWierd one, folks! This weekend I started up my computer which was working
just fine Friday and found that I cannot connect using Dial-Up Networking
(Message is above plus "The system cannot find the file specified" and shows
up after dialing and connecting). I figured - oh, well - let's check out
settings - went to configure my connection and found that the "LMHOSTS"
option is grayed out - can't be selected. So, I said "things are hosed up
pretty bad - maybe I should restore from a couple of days ago" and started up
the restore wizard only to be greated by a message stating that there are no
available restore points.
Now - here's the only major thing I changed recently: I installed a test
copy of Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition in dual-boot mode, so I could
take a look at the options available - and installed the release candidate of
Service Pack 1 for it. After that - everything was working fine for several
days, though...
I'm afraid it looks like I'm stuck with a "System Repair" at this point.
Any other ideas?

- Windows XP Setup >> Found no antivirus softwareI installed service pack2 for windows xp, and now at startup
I get the message that my computer is not protected.
When I check, I see that my antivirussoftware is not

list of windows as antivirussoftware it can detect.
What can I do so that the AVG virusscanner is detected?

- Windows XP >> Old HD new motherboardHi,
It looks like the computers MB has failed, no video, power comes on but
nothing happens. Tried pulling cards, installed different ram and tried
new power supply.
I want to install a new MB and put the old HD back so all programs work
how they used to.
It looks like the computer won't boot on the HD but if I put the HD in
another computer I can see all the files. It looks like the OS sees the
computer as different and so won't boot.
Is there any clean way around this?
Thanks Dave

- Windows XP Setup >> WMI: Access is Denied after Win2K to XP UpgradeI have just upgraded a laptop from Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 to Windows XP
Service Pack 2 and since doing so I cannot get access to WMI data. I've also
noted the following symptoms:
- Can't see any Network Connections in the Network Connections folder.
- Receive an error 0x800A0046 when running Windows Updates.
- Receive the message WMI: Access is denied when looking at service
dependencies.
- Receive the message "Can't collect information" when using MSinfo.
- Receive the message "WMI: Access is Denied" when looking at the properties
of WMI Control under Computer Management.
So far I've:
- Done everything in Knowledge Base articles 254631 and 823775
- I've run the command "rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection WBEM 132
%windir%\inf\wbemoc.inf" to rebuild the WMI database.
- I've reregistered all the WMI components.
- I've deleted the repository folder (and saw that it was recreated).
- I've checked that the SERVICE account has the "Impersonate a client after
authenitcation" permission.
- I've checked that all necessary services are running with the correct
credentials.
- I've checked the DCOM default impersonate and authenication levels.
- I've removed the machine from the domain.
- I've checked and compared the registry permissions to a working machine
using AccessEnum for SysInternals.
- I've run an inplace upgrade (repair) install, starting from Windows and
starting from booting from the CD.
I'm pretty sure this is simply a permissions problem, but can't for the life
of me find where the problem is. Is there anything else to try before a
clean install?
Thanks

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> audio playback problem solved!I have had the problem reported by some here that when
playing the timeline, sometimes the audio doesn't for 5 to
20 seconds after the start of the video, if it starts at
all. In fact, if I saved a project, I could successfully
play the timeline once, immediately after opening the
project, but attempts to rewind the timeline and play it
again would result in delayed audio start, or no audio at
all.
Looking through the notes on papajohn.org, I saw reports
about audio playback difficulties associated with WinDVD
version 4, which came preinstalled on my Dell notebook.
The reported symptoms were different than mine
(e.g. "chipmunk sounds", clipping sounds), but the fix is
the same -- I uninstalled WinDVD and my problem is
solved. I have not yet tried installing WinDVD version 5
which reportedly resolves the underlying issue(s).

- Windows XP Setup >> Activation on Several ComputersI recently bought a copy (only one because of the
extremely high cost) of XP Professional with the view of
installing on my three home computers which I have already
upgraded hardware wise. Now I find that some sort of
activation is requuired after installation. This
activation seems as if it will limit installation of my
one copy of XP Pro to one computer.
What steps can I take in order to install my copy of SP
Pro on my three home computers?
Thanks for any advice.

- Windows XP Hardware >> Puzzling USB Flash Drive BehaviorHi and thank you for reading.
I have twp XP computers and 4 Flash drives.
Computer A is my employers; a Dell Lattitute and is assigned to a domain, XP
Pro.
Computer B is my wife's, a HP Media Center, new in December 2005, XP Media.
We shasre a router at home; but the PCs don't share files, etc. because of
my employers security issues. That's fine: we share on the necessary data on
USB 2.0 flash memory sticks.
Both computers have rear (full 2.0) USB ports, from ports (who knows?) and
powered Belkin 7 port hubs.
Flash Drive 1 is generic, USB 2.0, holds our Quicken files, works on both
PCs, both powered hubs no problem. Is assigned drive letter Q on both
machines. (somestimes I pay the bills, sometime she does.)
Flash Drive 2 is generic, USB 2.0, holds our Filemaker Pro addressbooks.
Great for Chistmas cards. Is assigned drive letter X on both machines.
Flash Drive 3 is new. USB 2.0. PNY 512K. Works fine on my Dell. Both in
real ports and on the hub. Is assigned drive letter T on the Dell.
Flash Drive 4 is new. USB 2.0. Sony 128K. Works fine on my Dell. Both in
real ports and on the hub. Is assigned drive letter Y on the Dell.
Problem: Same for both Flash Drive 3 and 4, but not 1 and 2: 1and 2 work
fine on the HP.
* The HP with XP Media recognizes and identifies the PNY and Sony Flash
drives correctly, but seeks and fails to find a driver for them (although
drive 1 and 2 are using the USB 2 Mass Storage diver.) It cannot find a
driver in D:\i386, where Windows was placed by HP, nor on E:\i386, the
Windows CD, nor anywhere else I send it to look.
* I have located Win98 drivers for both drives, but am reluctant to try to
install them.
* There are tons of other USB peripherals attached and working fine:
scanner, Wacom tablet, two printers, Palm synch, cameras, wireless keyboard &
mouse, bluethooth adaptor et cetera.
* I have tried them carefully in the rear ports, the from ports, and the
powered hub. Same result.
* Both show the yellow circle, not under USB controllers, but, I think,
under storage devices or USB devices in the Device manager. (I'm not at that
Pc as I write.)
This seems like something odd I've done that I should be able to fix.
-> Does not seem likely that the driver would have a limit of 2 devices.
-> Perhaps by assigning a letter on PC A I've confused PB B? Can I unassign
cleanly? would that work?
-> Can I "wrap" the driver in an INF file and direct the seeking installer
to it?
Really, it isn't terribly important. We can get by with the drives that do
work. But it is terribly puzzling, and I'd love to understand what is going
on.
Thank you for any suggestions anf help!
