- Windows XP >> Computer change and Windows XP ActivationHello,
I recently swapped-out a variety of components on the
computer I built a couple months ago due to quality
problems with the original components. As a result, I
had to reinstall Windows XP using the same OEM license I
purchased when I originally bought the components to
build the computer.
When I attempted to install and reactivate the XP
installation, I received an error message that stated
that I was exceeding the licensed number of
installations. Obviously, MSFT thinks I am trying to
defraud them but I cannot find any resource on MSFT.com
that will help me correct this situation.
Any suggestions on how to fix this?
Thanks a million.

- Windows XP Setup >> Workgroup sharing and browsingI have two WINXP Pro machines. Fully up to date with patches. They connect
via a Netgear FM114P. One is wired, the other is wireless. The SSID matches
the workgroup name, the workgroup names match, file and print sharing is
enabled, shares are enabled, but I cannot browse the workgroup or connect to
the other machine. I always get that the workgroup cannot be accessed.
With network neighborhood the wired station can see itself and its own
shares. With network neighborhood the wireless station can see neither
itself nor the wired station.
Using start-run \\computername the wired station can see itself and its own
shares but not the wired station. Usining start-run \\computername the
wireless station can see itself and its own shares but not the wired
station.
I tried both with and without WEP enabled. Each station on its own seems to
work fine and can find its own shares.
Can anyone help me out?

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> I need to change Frame/sec to 29.97I'm partial to using Pinnacle Studios to edit my home movies and burn to DVD. However, I need for the videos to be 29.97 frames per second. Everytime I go into video settings, and manually change the frames/sec to 29.97, WMM2 still captures at 30, and I get an error in Pinnacle when I try and work with the clips. I, of course, have to convert the video to avi before pinnacle will recognize it, but that's not where the problem lies (at least I don't think so). Help?

- Windows XP Network >> XP Pro ignoring WINS, NetBIOS naming, won't see networkI have an odd problem, hope someone knows what to do. Basically I can't get
the XP system to use any kind of name resolution on local network.
I have an existing network with:
1 NT4/SP6a PDC (all security patches)
1 W2K/SP4 Pro
1 Suse Linux
1 XP Pro/SP1a
I had to restore the NT4 system from an old image, the image was created
before the XP Pro computer had joined the domain. I was able to recreate the
COMPUTER NAME for the W2K system. The W2K system can log in and see shares
in Network Neighborhood on the NT4 server. The Linux box is running Samba
and can access shares on the W2K and NT4 systems.
However, I can't get the XP system to play with the other computers. I
created the COMPUTER ACCOUNT in server Manager in NT4 for the XP system. I
logged in as administrator on the XP system, changed from Domain to
Workgroup, restarted. I logged in again as administrator, and attempted to
join the domain. I got a message that the Domain Controller cannot be found.
I then discover that:
1) I can't ping using NAME
2) I can ping all systems using IP
3) I can access Internet through the MS Proxy 2 on the NT4 PDC.
I am using DHCP on the XP system. It is getting the IP, WINS, DNS info, it
shows up in ipconfig /all. I have NetBIOS enabled over TCP/IP. (I tried all
3 options in my desperation, though the default should work) I tried setting
the NetBIOS node type to 0x4, and 0x8. Although the XP system is creating
entries in the WINS database, it will not find any other system using
broadcast OR WINS. If I add entry in LMHOSTS.SAM or HOSTS file, I can then
PING by NAME. But, I can't see network at all. I have tried connecting via
\\servername and \\serverip . I get message 'Network path cannot be found'
I don't remember having this much trouble when I set up XP with the NT4 PDC
before.
Any ideas?

- Windows XP Setup >> No color in Lotus 1-2-3 v5 with WindowsXPEver since switching to WindowsXP my Lotus 1-2-3 v5 has
lost color (except blue font in unprotected cells). This
is true for all new files as well as any old Windows98
files. Color in old files is still there, but cannot be
modified in any way. Color in OfficeXP (Word and Excel)
works fine. IBM/Lotus has no visible help and apparently
does not support this product anymore.
Is there any known fix? Does anyone else have this same
problem?

- Windows XP Update >> Multiple installationsHi
I have got a computer with Windows XP home edition pre installed -- That
would make it an OEM installation. I have a previous computer with an Windows
ME (OEM) installed and I want to install XP on this computer as well.
My question is: can I use the same installation disk as to my new computer
or do I have to by a new one? Can I upgrade my XP licens so that I can use it
to both my computers?
Best regards

- Windows XP >> Very slow unzipUnzipping compressed archives takes an age on my PC - well several minutes
for an operation that takes just a few seconds with WinZip. I've tried
defragging my hard drives, copying the archive to a near-empty partitition,
disabling windows defender, disabling AVG antivirus, but with no significant
improvement. During the Extract,CPU usage is normally 98% or higher. Any
thoughts on how I might investigate the problem further ?
Thanks,

Windows XP >> I can't open any MS-DOS executables
When I try to open any DOS executable, nothing at all
happens. No error message, no warning. Just absolutely
nothing. When I go to try and open them in the command
prompt, it says something similar to "Windows cannot find
the specified file."

- Windows XP Support >> Reinstalling windows xpHi - I am having all sorts of anoying little problems such as failing
screen savers, slow printers, missing files when trying to remove
programs, restarting for no reason etc etc. Taken one at a time I
could live with it but the cumulation is causing me grief!! I have
done several system restores and also have to admit to using a couple
of registry clean up tools too.
I think I have reached the stage of having to reinstall windows xp but
need to know 2 things please -
1. Can you give me an indication of how to actually do it (do I need to
format drive etc)? I have the original Novatec "Recovery CD" for XP
Home edition SP2, the Recovery CD-ROM says that "The software included
on this recovery cd rom was preinstalled on my hard drive at the
factory and may only be used for backup and recovery of your Novatech
PC system."
2. Will that clear out all the old registry settings?

- Windows XP Security >> Homepage Reset Blocked!I just had the Windows SP2 installed which made all kinds
of security settings and changes. (nice by the way) My
problem is that my homepage has been reset to MSN.com
which is not what I want. I know how to change this
browser setting (tools> internet options> general >
homepage) BUT it has been disabled and "grayed out" so
that I cannot change it back. I have searched high and
low about correcting this. I had this happen to me once
before and I caused it, so I knew how to fix it...but I
can't remember how! Any advice welcome and thanx for
reading.

- Windows XP Security >> Allow users to enable/disable hibernation? Is there any way to give regular users permission to enable/disable
hibernation on Windows 2000 domain computers? I have searched through
gpo and the registry, and all I can find is how to give users
permission to change active power profiles (by changing permissions on
some registry keys). I can't find anything on hibernation though. Any
help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

- Windows XP Hardware >> Clicking Sound From Hard DriveHello All,
I installed a new hard drive in my Dell notebook last week end. As well I
did a clean install of XP Pro. Everything runs OK but I keep hearing a
clicking sound coming from within the notebook which can only be the hard
drive. This can happen when the computer is idle.
The other drive didn't do this, and I don't think that it's a faulty drive
so is there something is the XP setup that could be causing this?
Thanks

- Windows XP >> Access 97 problems after Win XP Pro SP1a Install. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Has anyone
else come across this problem?
I just upgraded my Win XP Pro to SP1a. Access 97 ran fine
until the upgrade. After the upgrade the following
message keeps appearing when trying to print to a preview
screen:
"The format specification for 'xxxxx' is invalid. You
can't save output data to a file in this format until you
correct the setting for the format in the Windows
Registry. Run Setup to reinstall 'programme name' or, if
you're familiar with the settings in the Registry, try to
correct them yourself. For more information on the
Registry, click Help."
This message comes up 2 - 6 times before the actual print
preview screen (with report) comes up on the monitor.
The 'xxxxx' varies in length and seems to be part of the
report SQL and part of the actual object name. For eg:
[Payroll_Group_No] shows as 'oll_Group_No]' and the
object name repWklyTimeSheet shows as 'eSheet'.
Is it a setting in the Registry? If so where would i find
it? (I "Reinstalled" Access 97 ... didn't have any
affect) Any help or ideas would be much appreciated,
Thanks Leroy

- Windows XP >> Desktop icons go missingI'm using Windows XP service pack2. I have McAfee Virusscan 7 plus installed.
The
problem is that when I put on my laptop, only the desktop is shown without
the icons, taskbar and buttons. I had to restart 2-3 times to get the desktop
and others normally. Nowadays I press ctrl+alt+del to bring up the task
manager, then close the explorer.exe already running and run explorer.exe
freshly and everything works fine. There are days when my comp boots normally
also. This thing started happening after I connected my laptop to a new
broadband connection. The modem is connected to my comp via a USB cable. How
can I correct this annoyance. Please help. Thank you.
