- Windows XP Security >> RPC Service ProblemWhile troubleshooting an issue, I very stupidly changed the RPC service Logon
Account from the default account to 'Local System Account'.
Since then, I've been getting various DCOM, COM+, etc, errors in my event
log, and some programs are bombing out trying to run.
Does anybody know a way I can get the RPC service back to the way it was? I
don't remember the account it uses by default, and I wouldn't know the
password for it if I did (though I do faintly recall a program that can give
you this info).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Thomas Foster

- Windows XP Network >> WebDAV folder from command lineThis is related to my last question, but slightly
different. On Microsoft's support web site, I find this
quotation:
====
Windows clients (Windows 2000 and Windows XP): Connect to
a WebDAV directory by adding the directory to the list of
Network Places and display the contents as if it were part
of the same file system on your local computer. Once
connected, you can drag and drop files, retrieve and
modify file properties, and complete many other file-
system tasks. You can also connect using the command-line
client (known as WebDAV Redirector). This client allows
you to use existing applications across the Web and share
files through firewalls and proxy servers.
====
How do you "connect using the command-line client known as
WebDAV Redirector"? Is there a webdav executable? How do
you reference the WebDAV folder? What's the syntax?
WebClient services are running.
Thanks,

- Windows XP Network >> Windows Sockets initialization failedAfter I ran ad-aware standard and deleted all the objects
found, I turned off my pc. When next I started it, I
could not log back on to my user site. I re-installed my
system from the back-up disks that came with the
computer. I still get the error message: Precision
Time; Windows Sockets initialization failed. Does anyone
know of this and how it can be rectified?

- Windows XP Basic >> Scheduling a task to open a web pageHi
I use the Windows Task scheduler to run a variety of tasks, principally
anti-spy scans, on a daily basis. However, it seems that the scheduler
cannot be encouraged to launch a web page at a given time.
Does anyone know if Task Scheduler can be configured to do this?
If not, is it possible to write a small batch file to open the web page
which I can then schedule via Task Scheduler?
I know I can use software such as AlarmWiz to do this for me but I
would like to know if this is a genuine limitation of the Windows Task
Sceduler or not.
Thanks for any suggestions you may have.

- Windows XP >> Adobe Reader "speed launcher" in Start MenuFor information:
I have Adobe Reader 7 installed on my computer. By default, it had put
a shortcut for Adobe Speed Launcher in "Start Up" menu. It seems to
serve no purpose, and I decided to remove it from Start Up.
Adobe Web site says: "To disable the Speed Launcher, remove the Speed
Launcher icon from your Startup folder." I tried *deleting* the
shortcut in Start Up, but it would not work.On opening the "Start Up"
folder, the only item I could see was desktop.ini. Finally, I got rid
of it by dragging the icon on to the desktop with the mouse, and then
deleting it.

- Windows XP >> Chinese to English? My son is in China and has the use of a XP Pro PC. Unfortunatly it is in
Chinese. How does he go about changing it to English. Following is a quote
from him
Most of windows is in chinese characters (control panel, start menu,
microsoft word - when you type in word chinese characters appear). The
language toolbar is installed and as far as I can tell has english selected
(I picked it out from what I think was the regional language menu, again
its hard to say because it was in Chinese). The letters 'EN' appear at the
bottom right of the screen, when i click on them there are also options for
CH and JP. All three options are followed by chinese characters, the EN
one I believe is followed by the 2 characters for english, then the 3
characters for canadian in brackets.
Can any one help?

- Windows XP >> Problem with System RestoreI am running XP Pro ver.5.1, service pack 2. Also McAfee virusscan 10.
After running system restore when the computer reboots I get the error
message "Some components of ActiveShield are either missing or might not have
been installed properly." I then have to reinstall McAfee VirusScan
(downloading about 14 MB from the internet) which is a bit of a pain. Can
this problem be avoided? Help to do so would be appreciated.
Thanks

- Windows XP >> folder thumbnail problemFor a folder containing images, I used the folder
properties to choose one image to appear on the thumbnail
view of the folder. Unfortunately, this image has shown
up on the thumbnails of other folders as well. Whatever
image I assign to any of these folders, the other folders
use the same image.
How can I fix this?

Windows XP Hardware >> Inventoring my Windows
I have several Windows XP disks around my house - and a couple of
Windows machines and a Mac with Parallels.
I'm going to upgrade my main computer and give my oldest away to my
grandson - I'll probably format that first and reinstall Windows.
But I need to inventory my machines and find out which machine is
using which version of Windows.
How do I do that?

- Windows XP Hardware >> GAMES CRASHING XP? XP UPDATES TO BLAME?This problem has happened in the past few months. Around
the time microsoft started releasing those updates for the
sobig worm and such. I downloaded old ones they said were
critical also, and ever since then every time i play
computer games the computer crashes. This happens with
games that are in first person. Games like Mafia do not
crash, and thats a third person game. Games like counter-
strike or battle field crash. I would be playing one time
maybe 30 minutes. THen screen go black, then go back to
what i last saw and then the computer will be jammed
making me have to reset it using hte power switch. This is
very annoying. THe next time i got back, it will take less
than 10 minutes to do the same thing over. I tried
everything you guys said on stuff related, about msconfig,
about setting hardware acc to two to the left, turning off
anti alias, all sorts of things. And these problems arent
caused by my video card because I was using the same
drivers for over 6 months then I get this problem so I
update drivers for card and no luck still. Computer is not
overheating, I check bios its 120-125 degrees farenheit.
System:
HP Pavillion
Windows XP Home
1.67 ghz
512 mb ram
80 GB HD
cd-rw
32 mb nvidia geforce2 integrated gpu
I even used a virus scanner from a site you gave and I
found three minor trojans that would not cause this
because this has been happening before I got them. What is
the problem? I suspect its something in the updates. Or,
my computer IS overheating, I looked inside, no dust, fans
working well, evrything is fine. I have latest directx and
have since it came out. My power surge protector is where
I have plugged computer in for long time, since my old
computer and I dont think it has to do with power supply.
Same cords since beginning when I got computer. Computer
is about 3 years old little younger and problem happening
since 6 or so months, around late july. What is the
problem? Thanks

- Windows XP Hardware >> Posts Overlooked?I have posted this 3 different times over the past 2 weeks
and no one at all has responded. By chance were my posts
overlooked or is it not that common of a problem?
My startup screen halts when i try to load windows. I just
reformated the drive and reloaded windows on it. It works
in another computer but not in this one. No matter if i
choose start from last known config ect.. I have changed
nothing in the bios and it has worked on this same
computer before. When i choose to load in safe mode it
stops at this
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition\WINDOWS\System32
\Drivers\Mup.sys
what is Mup.sys and how could i solve this probleM?
.
now there are updates to this post...
I have formated and reinstalled windows on the same hd..
does not fix the problem and the hd works on another
computer so its not the hd. I have turned off usb support
didnt fix it so i turned it back on. I also removed and
reinserted many of these to see if it was the problem.
Ram 1 stick at a time, cdrom and dvdroms both, removed the
usb cords from the motherboard. I have tried everything
that i can think of.. can anyone help?

- Windows XP >> Password on StartupI just upgraded to XP Pro. For a couple of days, I could start it up
without any password, the way I did with WinMe. Today, at startup it
brings up a password dialog box. I suspect it is a result of my
installing last night MS Office XP &/or its media disk or its
interactive tutorial.
Whenever the password dialog has come up, I have just pressed OK. But I
would like to eliminate that step as I did in WinMe. I am the only
one using the computer and it is in my home. So, I do not need the
security of the password. Can someone tell me how to get rid of the
password dialog box? Thanks.
