My USB flash drive doesn't get listed in My Computer with the hard drives
and CD Rom drives. Windows XP recorgnized the flash drive model and loaded
correct driver, the message said the device is installed and ready to use but
when I check My Computer drive list it is not there. What else I need to set
or change to see my flash drive to access the files on it ? Please help.

- Windows XP >> Windows XP is entirely a pile excrementSlow bloated and full of annoying bugs.
Performance is dismal and so frustrating
I will end up putting 98 or me on because xp is utterly crap.....and on a
2.4GHZ P4 with 256GB ram running service pack 1.
Hopeless piece of crap from microsoft and I cannot believe HP sold me a
combo like this. It is a disgrace.
Have tried every performance tweak available on the net and have made some
small improvements but I am so jacked off with XP and its shitty bugs and
hold-ups and plain in your face annoyance value.
Am I the ONLY one to have found this ???
Why do you all carry on as if XP was actually worth the trouble???
Please comment

- Windows XP >> I have had enough of this CRAP! I reformat and still have the same trouble!!!!!!My previous posts were about a problem with Windows Explorer, and not
being able to use the directory tree in the left pane, after it's been
open for a while.
After getting some ideas about what the problem might be, I
reformatted the HD today and started to reinstall things. Would you
believe that in the midst of some of the preliminary installs, from
files on a DVD.............. I GOT THE SAME FREAKING PROBLEM WITH
WINDOWS EXPLORER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When I click on the folders in the directory tree, they won't open, I
get a message saying the path statement is wrong and the files aren't
available. When I close Explorer and start a new instance of it, it
works for a while then does the same damned thing.
I would sure appreciate anyone's help at this point. I don't intend to
waste any more time installing apps until this thing is fixed once and
for all.
The OS is XP Pro, the machine is a Gateway, with a 120GB HD, 1GB RAM,
Soundblaster Audigy card, NVIDIA ti 4600 graphics card, Sony DRU 500
DVD burner, Lite On CD burner.
Thank you ..... I am about to go back to my old Athlon 1.8 Ghz machine
that never gave me any of this crap.

- Windows XP Setup >> Prestaging Computer Objects....Hi Everyone,
I am trying to prestage account for deployment. I get the GUID
identifer and put that into Active Directory when I manually create a
computer object along wtih applying the correct permissions to edit the
computer accout. When the machine builds, it still takes a random name. It
ignores the prestaged account that I had setup for it. I doubled checked the
permissions for editing that computer object and made sure I did not make a
typo when putting in the GUID, they are all correct. What is going on with
it?
Thanks,

- Windows XP Security >> W2k logons fail after XP upgradeI have two computers on a workgroup LAN behind a cable
modem.
Each has a shared printer and several shared folders.
I upgraded one computer to Win XP Pro earlier today.
The second computer is running W2k and can no longer
access any of the shared folders on the XP machine, nor
can the W2k system print to the shared laserjet on
the XP machine.
Error messages are "logon failed: user account
restriction" or "access denied"
The XP machine can access all shared folders and the
epson printer on the W2k machine, so one way is working.
I've been all over the knowledgebase and newsgroups
because I am sure this is something simple!
Thanks for your help.

- Windows XP Support >> Restricting user rights on Windows Xp ProHi folks,
I do some volunatary work for a local youth group. As you can imagine
they are prone to messing about with the settings on the computers, as
a result I am constantly trying to get them back into working order.
I've been looking into the possibility of restricting their access to
such things as drives, task mgr (they disable net nanny etc), desktop
settings, ability to save to the C: drive, and download permissions. Is
there a way in which I can cofigure these settings for the youth users?
(Without having to edit the registry) By the way they all log on as the
one user : Youth User:
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

- Windows XP >> Task Manager behaving stranglyIf I start the Task Manager from a limited access account, it
only shows the Cpu Usage and the Cpu Usage History windows.
The Title Bar, the Menu Bar, the tabs, the Cpu Usage,
the Cpu Usage History, thePf Usage, the Page File Usage History,
the Totals, the Physical memory, the Commit Charge,
the Kernel Memory windows and the Status bar can not be seen.
And of course I can not change tab.
If I start the Task Manager from my Administrator account, it runs
just OK.
I have done a full scan for malware with Kaspersky Anti-Virus

What can I do?

I have a serious problem. My computer, running XP,

- Windows XP Security >> Firewall and Anti Virus problemI have to have Symantec Client Security Firewall/anti-virus on my PC since it
is the same as what is on our PCs at work. Don't know what happened but the
Windows firewall and AV came back on and I can't turn them off. I am an
Adminuser on the system and even logged on using the "ADMIN" user ID. I can
get into the Security Center fine but when I select the firewall the options
are "greyed out", I can't select to turn it off, or on for that matter. It
tells me taht I have 2 firewalls running but the recommendations are not
there either. Tried disabling stuff using the Sercives.msc option, but that
didn't help.
Can anyone advise me what to try next. System performance is suffering.
Thanks

- Windows XP Network >> losing mapped drives with wirelessI am having problem in my new school lab keeping mapped
drives over a wireless network with the clients running XP
pro. The drives I am mapping to are on a w2k server that
is not wireless. This is a simple network with no domain.
The access point is in the same room and the signal is
strong. Even though I get an error message from the
clients at startup that says the client is unable to
connect to the mapped drive, I have found that this is not
100% true. I am still able to run some programs on the
client that require the use of the mapped drive. However,
one of the programs, that perhaps is requiring more
network usage, often fails. The access point
(Proxim/Orinoco AP600) is connected to the same switch
that the server is connected to, so it isn't a problem
with too many hops. I have upgraded the firmware on the
access point and I have downloaded XP pro updates as well.
If I hardwire a client to the network, the problem is
solved instantly. I am to the point now that I am
considering hardwiring the entire lab, or donwgrading the
clients to Win98, neither of which I am too enthused
about. The desktops are using Orinoco PCI wireless network
cards. The CPU is a Celeron 2Ghz. There is 256 MB RAM.
The machines are not logging on to a domain. Encryption
is off. Here are the results of the ping test to the
server from a workstation. Packets Sent:105,
Received:105, Lost:0, Min Time:1ms, Max:3ms, Avg:1ms. A
ping test to the access point gave similar results.
I tried changing the access point and the server to 10mbs
half duplex, but there was no improvement. I have also
disabled the built in ethernet cards on the clients. Any
thoughts?

When at the update site, click on the link to personalize the site. Add
"Windows Update Catalog" and save your preference. Back at the main update
page, you will now see a new link for the catalog. Click on that and it
will take you to the site where you can download the updates and save them
to disk.

Yes, on the windowsupdate page on left hand side, you need to enable
Personal settings and then the Windows Catalog will appear, click on
this and then you can select which updates to download and specify a
folder to download them to.

- Windows XP Network >> XP IP issuesHi all,
I have got a real strange on here for you all...
One of the machines (WinXP SP1) on our network is having issues obtaining an
IP from the DHCP, nor ping the DHCP server works. The DHCP server is up and
running because all other machines on the network are fine. Here is what I
have tried so far.
1) Assigning a manual IP. Failed to ping the DHCP.
2) Tested the network cable with a testing kit for belkin. Cable is fine.
All the strands match up okay.
3) Switched ports on the switch. Failed.
4) Uninstalled the drivers, then reinstalled. This worked until a couple of
reboots later, then it failed again.
5) Disabled the onboard nic and installed a new pci nic that I know works
because it was in another machine and worked fine. This failed. The nic is
installed okay but it too cannot get an IP.
6) Reinstalled XP, this was okay for a while and then the a couple of days
later it started to fail to obtain an IP again.
The only thing I think it maybe is something on the computer (virus
maybe) that is screwing with something!
Any ideas?
Cheers

- Windows XP >> My Documents - repostHi,
Is each user account supposed to have its own private My Documents folder? I
thought this was the case, but when I created a new user account, it
displayed the same files in My Documents and had the same privileges to
those files as the original user account.
To clarify (I hope) ...
I had an existing user account -- User1/Password1, which everyone in the
office used. I wanted to keep the settings for that account, but make its
files private for one particular person and create a separate account for
everyone else.
I renamed the User1/Password1 account and password to
PrivateAccount/PrivatePassword and then created a new account with the
original username and password (User1/Password1). When I opened the "new"
general purpose account (User1/Password1) and looked in My Documents,
however, I could see (and read/write/delete) the same files as I thought
were now only going to be available to the PrivateAccount/PrivatePassword
account.
Could someone please clarify this for me and/or suggest a better way to have
a private folder / private files for one particular user on a computer
shared by a number of people?
Thank you.
