- Windows XP Support >> Volume issues with sounds from the OS onlyHello,
I've been struggling with a problem for a few days now, and am tired of
banging my head against the wall. Hopefully someone here can help.
Sounds played directly by the OS have their volume much too low. This
refers to sounds such as those heard when you launch or shutdown xp. If
I open the control panel and go to the "sounds and audio devices"
application, then select the "sounds" tab, and select any of the sounds
at the bottom ("Asterix", "Critical Stop", etc...) and hit the little
play icon, the sound is still very low. HOWEVER, if I browse directly
to the directory that contains these sound files ("windows\media") and
double click any of them, windows media player will launch and play the
sound at normal volume.
Another example of my issue is the sounds launched during the autoplay
of application / game CDs. Again, if I simply have the cd autoplay,
it's launch sound is much too low, but if I browse to the autoplay
directory and double click on the appropriate .wav file, it sounds at a
normal volume level. Sounds are also too low when I "test direct sound"
from the DXDiag app.
Obviously, my sound card is properly installed, or I would have no
sound at all. Selections in the volume control application are all near
max, and not muted.
As I mentioned previously, it appears that the issue is with the volume
of the sounds only when XP itself is generating them. All is fine when
another application tries to play the same sound files.
For those interested, I'm using a SoundBlasterLive!Value with driver
emu10k1m.sys version 5.12.0001.3300. Speakers are Creative Cambridge
Soundworks FPS (four speakers + sub woofer).
Please help.

Joel

- Windows XP >> strange directories in my root directoryI have just updated my Windows XP Home Edition via the

- Windows XP Network >> XP Home Networking Issues - 3 PC's - SP 1I have 3 pc's with identical hardware specs. All Pentium 4 2.4ghz and Netgear
100mbps ethernet cards connected to each other through a 10/100 hub.
Hard-wired not wireless. All cables have been tested and work.
I can share an internet connection between the computers. But I cannot
access any of the shared files or folders on any of the machines. And none of
the other machines see my pc on the network. But I can see them sometimes.
I have disabled all the firewalls, repaired the IP, set NetBIOS over TCP/IP
and even assigned all the pcs with their own IP addresses - 192.168.0.1, .2,
.3 and so on. And I've run the Network Setup Wizard a billion times and only
get errors or when its completed nothing works.
The error I get when trying to access the workgroup via My Network Places
says that the shared folder/pc is unavailable...depsite being able to share
the net access. And I cannot add the other pc's as a new network place. It
can't find them.
I can't ping any of the other pc's either. I get the "Request Timed Out".
And the net connection sharing goes in and out. Sometimes works and sometimes
doesnt.
If you could, please email me directly with any responses you may have.
email - chrisraypierce@hotmail.com
Thanks.
Also. They all have Service Pack 1, not 2. 2 will not work on any of the
pc's. It locks them up.

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> leadtek tv tuner card crashes mm2Movie Maker 2
WinXP Home sp2
Winfast TV 2000 Expert (Leadtek)
Hello
The main problem is that when I try to capture from the Leadtek card,
which is listed as the capture device when I click on the capture,
Movie Maker immediately crashes ..
History
Totally cleaned up machine with defrag, clean up etc. Installed sp2.
Everything went fine. Installed a pci firewire card. Works fine -
managed to capture video from Sony camcorder via firewire into mm2.
TV capture card is working fine for viewing but when I try to capture
via mm2, mm2 crashes.
I went to the PapaJohn site - does this apply to this situation ..
"11/10/02 - Microsoft - 99.9% of s-video ports are TV-out ONLY.
Therefore, although you can 'switch' output so that the signal that
used to go to the monitor will go to the camcorder or the TV, it does
not work the other way.
To capture analog video you need a graphics card with VIVO (video in
and video out) capability (look at the ATI All in Wonder ranger) or a
specialized analog capture card such as the Dazzle, Pinnacle or
Hauppage range."
If not - is there any setting I am missing, or is this just one of
those incompatabilities?
Many thanks in advance
Deb

Windows XP Perform Maintain >> control panel not working
Do a search in system32 for all *.cpl files.
Now the trick.
One at a time double click each file to see if it runs. If one fails to run,
rename it, do not delete, then try control panel again.

- Windows XP >> Reloading CD softwareI just installed a new DVD-CD RW burner on my Dell Optiplex, and when
I tried installing the Nero software is apparently deleted my old Nero
software AND it nuked the Microsoft drivers. The system "sees" the
drive (it is in the hardware list under My Computers), but it does not
show up in the list of drives under My Computer and also has a yellow
exclamation mark by the device. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling
the device. It cannot install the driver software. So, now in order to
repair the driver/system I need to load the CD. Catch 22. There seems
to be NO place where you can download and install the Microsoft
drivers for the drive (its a Sony and it is my understanding they use
the Microsoft drivers).
Does anyone know a way around this Catch 22? Why doesn't Microsoft
have a place where their drivers can be downloaded and installed,
especially the crucial ones like the CD??!!

- Windows XP Hardware >> Kofax cardI have had the pleasure of being given the project of fixing our
Scanner PC's. We run a Kodax DS 7500 scanner connected to a pc running
Win 95 via an Adrenalin 1700 s Kofax card. the program that does our
scanning is a third party software program which does some barcode
recognition. The problem as I understand it is that we have previously
been unscessful in getting the scanner, pc and program to work together
under an operating system later than win 95. Apparently there have
been issues getting the barcodes to be read.
The third party software developers tell me that it is because the
Kofax card cannot read barcodes under a later OS.
Is this true? Any suggestions? unfortunately there is a lack of
documentation and/or knowledge here.
Appreciate any advice.
