Fixing boot problem, now what?

Windows XP620
Hi all,

I have a laptop that has XP Pro on it. It has quite a

bit of data on it I need to save. It started to give me

the following error message when I first turn it on:

Windows could not start because the following file is

missing or corrupt:

\WINDOWS\system32\l_intl.nls

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows setup

using the original Setup CD-ROM.

Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.

I finally get to the C:\WNDOWS prompt but what do

I do from here?

thanks,

charles......

hi charles,

If you type help you find the commands to help you to do what you want, in

this case you may want CHKDSK or COPY.

Check to see if there is a file on the cd in i386 called l_intl.nl_. If you

can find it you can use the extract command from the cd to extract the file

and put it in windows\system32 OR just give me your email and I'll email you

the file provided you have another working computer to receive it on.

Assuming your CD drive is drive D:, enter the following command at the

C:\WINDOWS prompt:

expand d:\i386\l_intl.nl_ c:\windows\system32\l_intl.nls

Good luck

Re:Fixing boot problem, now what?

Good try but the restore cd only does it one way.

Deletes all partitions, creates one big partition,

formats it to ntfs and installs an image (ghost like)

to the partition. That way I loose all data.

I tried the expand command and it did not recogize it.

It is one of the supported command in the list generated

by the help command. If the commands are coming off

the \system32 directory and it is hosed, not much I can

do. Beside the oem cd that came with the laptop didn't

work like a "normal" one. Had to use another one just

to get that far.

thanks,

charles......

Re:Fixing boot problem, now what?

Great idea but I think the whole \system32 directory is

blown. I would hat to have to replace all the files in it

over email. Besides as I mentioned in another response

the "expand" command did not work when I tried it.

thanks,

charles......

Thanks for the pointer but the expand doesn't work.

Thanks for all who responded.

The "final" solution is/was to remove the hd from the laptop

and replace it with a new one. I put the original laptop hd

into another computer and will copy the "shared foders"

directory to another hard drive for the first backup. Then

I will network the laptop with the new configuration to the

other computer that has the data I want and copy it across

I hope this works, it should. I know all about ownerships

and stuff like that (been through it before) so I will let you all

know how it turns out.

thanks again,

charles.....
