- Windows XP >> Nero hijacked music file iconI updated to Nero 7 and all the icons for the music files are nero
icons despite the fact that WMP11 is set as the default player. This
also shows up in the file association, but the nero icon persists. To
top this off, dbPoweramp has a small utility that provides a pop up
window for all the music files showing the ID3 tag information and
other file information...this is a neat utility. With files with the
Nero icon, this popup does not work as well, only showing restricted
or limited information and not the complete ID3 information.
I don't even know what to call this substitution, but it happened
during Nero setup and is not something I enabled...so it is like some
default I overlooked. There is no information in the Nero help on this
and it is a pain in the neck to uninstall Nero just to re-install it
without knowing how the issue arose in the first place.
Anyone have a clue how to get the Nero music file icons to revert??
Thanks for any help.

from one user to the next my DSL connection is lost and I
have to log back into my account and restart my DSL

this way. Anybody have any suggestions on some settings
that may have been altered?

- Windows XP Support >> DESKTOP ICONS CHANGING TO DEFAULTI have an ongoing problem with my desktop icon changing to IE defaults when
I perfom certain actions such as closing a window or emptying the recycle
bin. Also I feel startups are slower lately.
I know this sounds like a spyware problem and I have used several utilities
including ad-aware, spyware doc and microsoft anti-spy. They sometimes find
things but the problem still exists.
Could the be things this software cannot find and if so how do I get rid of
it?
Also, could there be another cause altogether?

- Windows XP >> Playback Streaming WMV Files from Web ServerI am using Microsoft Media Player 11 on the Windows XP. Before upgraded to
this version, I can playback streaming file of WMV or WMA types from Web
server without having to download it first to my local computer. The
protocol for this file playback is via HTTP. I had tried to set the buffer
time of the player setting to 1 sec, but it still has to download the file
first before play it back.
What's wrong on the player? Does anyone have any idea?

- Windows XP Update >> Automatic restarts ... kinda rudeI came to my computer this morning to discover that it had restarted during
the night, as a result of an automatic update that required a restart (it
informed me very nicely about this). As it happened, I had documents open,
which I had deliberately left in an unsaved state.
In this case, it wasn't a huge deal, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who
actually trusts in the reliability of Windows enough to leave unsaved work
when I walk away from my computer. Looking at the Automatic Update settings
in Control Panel, I don't see anything in the settings that indicates my
computer might restart without requiring my permission.... or that it would
force a restart even when the open programs throw up their "Save Document?"
dialogue boxes.
I think the automatic restart should halt when it encounters a program that
tries to halt the restart process, or it should at least have a setting that
allows the user to specify whether or not such a forced restart will be
allowed. At the very minimum, we should have been informed that this
behaviour exists.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> use sfc /scannow with WinXP sp2 ?Hi,
I have always used sfc /scannow with WinXP but with SP1.I have tried to do
the same with another PC with SP2,and it looked fine while it was doing the
operation, but when i tried to restart the pc it wouldnt work properly.I have
no idea if this is because that pc had SP2,but both pc's are laptops with
"recovery cd's",and it worked fine on the laptop with SP1.
Can sfc /scannow be used on a pc with SP2?

- Windows XP >> Notebook under WinXP: netdevio.sys and TSH.exeHello,
My M30 Toshiba notebook runs under WinXP Home.
Afte each reboot I get the message "TSH.exe has found a problem and
had to close".
I also had some problems with accessing the CD drive so I decided to
start a WinXP repair. During the repair Windows asked for the
following thing:
"Netdevio.sys by Toshiba Network Device Usermode I/O protocal Disk is
necessary".
Question 1 : I don't have this sys file on the CD-ROMs distributed by
Toshiba with my notebook. Where can I find it?
Question 2 : How can I repair the problem with TSH.exe ?

- Windows XP Support >> Boot Up is Hanging (Sledge Hammer ready and swinging)Please help me save my PC from complete distruction by seldge hammer!!!
My XP home machine would not allow me into any Admin account either new or
old without then shutting down straight away with a message in C:prompt
"Documents settings shutdown" but it would allow me into Guest (no options).
Went into safe mode but again very little options to fix anything, ran the
usual Spyware, Anti Virus, Trojan ware, Adware etc nothing found. An IT guy
found a file named file "drivers.bat" and when I went into view the file it
had one line in it and it was C:\documents and settings\stutdown...... He
suggested leaving out the file from the startup called "drivers.bat". this
worked graet for a day..... NOW suddenly the sytem froze and a error message
came up saying windows needed to find a registry file, to which it had done
click ok... unable to click OK as the whole thing had frozen, so turned the
power off and restarted. of course power of meant chkdsk, it did but now it
will not boot at all either into safe or user login.... HELP ME PLEASE!!!!

Windows XP >> unrecognized file versions
Every time I boot up, my computer spends a bunch of time
searching the hard drive and eventually shows a message
requesting that I insert my XP Pro CD, as there are
unrecognized file versions on my computer. To the best of
my knowledge, this followed a Windows Update that I did,
but I could be wrong.
Is there anyway I can tell my computer to simply accept
what it has and stop asking about the current file versions???

From within Windows run "SFC /scannow" and put in your CD when prompted.

Do a full scan manually. Put the CD in the drive and exit the autorun,
then go to Start - Run and run
SFC /SCANNOW

- Windows XP Basic >> MSN.com hijacked homepage?Replaced hard drive, reinstalled XP Home SP1 from original CD. When I opened
Internet Explorer it came up with MSN.com on the home page. Nothing I do (IE
> tools > options) will allow me to change it to anythiing else - it simply
reverts back to MSN.com. It won't even allow me to use a blank page - only
MSN.com with a very long URL. Any ideas on how to fix this? Has MS stooped
so low as to hijack home pages?
Thanks for any help,

- Windows XP >> System keeps restartingI have just upgraded to Windows XP Home from Windows ME.
Now, whenever I start a program or go onto the internet to
download the lastest updates, I get an error message box:
SYSTEM SHUTDOWN
NT Authority/System - Remote Procedure call (RPC) service
terminated unexpectedly. Little timer starts and system
shuts down and restarts. No way to change the time on the
clock either.
Can anyone tell me if there is a fix for this. Thanks!

- Windows XP Hardware >> Wierd problemSo the other day I had a few hours available and decided it was time
for my computers bi-yearly cleaning.
Computer:
Intel P4 3.0ghz
Intel D865PERL mobo
2g Mushkin DDR400
Geforce 6600
Just to let everyone know, before the cleaning everything was working
perfectly, although it is an older system i could listen to music and
play my MMO and not have any problems.
I took all the components apart and cleaned out all the dust, added 2
standoffs to the mobo tray that i had been meaning to do and put it
all back together, no new components were added, nor did i adjust any
jumpers or settings. However when i start it up for the first time.
the whole thing seems slower, almost if i was cut back to 1.5ghz or
something. Any processor heavy tasks, such as my MMO cause the
integrated sound to falter and lag. any task takes two to three times
longer to do. I have taken everything back out to check for a loose
wire or anything and i can't find anything wrong. any ideas?

- Windows XP >> Dual instalationsWhen I installed my old copy of XP Pro on my new machine
I went through the revalidation procedure (via phone) to
maintain the registration. I currently have the XP Pro

legal? Should I change drive letters? I want to use the
current C: as a second non-bootbale drive. Thanks!

- Windows XP Setup >> re-installing/reconnecting user accountsI had to use System Recovery and have lost all of my user
accounts. The folders for each account still exist, but I
cannot access any of the Admin account folders. When I try

appended to the account name. How can I recreate my user
accounts, and have them attach to the old folders?

- Windows XP Network >> WEP, WPA, whatever....Hi all,
Just curious as to the opinions on what is the better thing to do in
securing a network. WEP can be cracked in 10 minutes apparently. WPA seems
to be the way to go but then as luck would have it, not every single wi-fi
NIC has WPA.
What do YOU do/use to ensure the integrity of your network? So far I rely on
WEP, a firewall and the fact that where I am has quite a bit of wi-fi but is
not considered an active wi-fi area by anyone. Time will eventually change
that and I must be prepared. I use a D-Link DWL-120+ which is a USB external
NIC/Aerial and is good for longer and more reliable connection.

- Windows XP Support >> Active DesktopI can't disable active desktop. Right-click on desktop...no active desktop
option. Control panel/Folders...nothing ckecked off, only My Home Page is on

Everything worked until I upgraded to Media Player 10, just coincidence or
possible cause? Thank you.
