- Windows XP Hardware >> BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG_INFO on boot from CDThe mobo on our PC went kaput, so we got a new one.
I set the BIOS to boot from CD 1st and am using a WinXP Home (the same
OS that's still on the HD.)
Half the time when we try to boot, it locks up after we "Press a key
to boot from CD...." and the other half of the time it goes through
the prep to set up XP, and then blue screens with:
BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG_INFO
(stuff)
STOP: 0x00000074
(A couple of times it would bluescreen with:
STOP: c0000221 Unknown Hard Error
\SystemRoot\System32\ntdll.dll
Which is kind of odd, because it's booting from the CD not the HD.)
I've tried resetting the BIOS, using Optimal settings, I've used a
different stick of RAM...and all the same thing.
Any ideas??
Thanks!

- Windows XP Hardware >> New Hardware Wizard ProblemI've just rebuilt my PC with XP. When I first connected my scanner the
hardward wizard found it and said 'this wizard helps you install
software for Flatbed Scanner(English)'
I tried the old software I had for my scanner but it failed to work,
not surprising.
I managed to get from my scanner supplier the W2K driver which is used
to also get the scanner working under XP.
But now I can only get the hardware wizard to come up with 'unknown

How can I get the hardware to once again give me the screen 'this
wizard helps you install software for Flatbed Scanner(English)' which
is what my instructions tell me I need to start from?

But almost every one hour, the second harddisk will be waken up(the primary

Help! Yesterday, while I was not using the computer, the
MS Community Forums (all of them) stopped posting most of
the posts. It became very sporadic. In the middle of the
night, there were about 3-4 hours of normal posting.
Currently, I am seeing posts that are 5 hour behind real
time, and very few of them.
I am not on a network.
I am only 170 miles from Redmond.
Non-MS forums I visit are in real time and fully
functioning.
Does anyone else see this?

Windows XP Basic >> adware,trojans,dialers,etc.
I recently experienced a blitz of adware, trojans and dialers apparently
from the same site. While Symantec Antivirus seems to have purged all
serious consequences, I'm left with some weird residual stuff that Symantec
doesn't now detect as an active problem (nor does Ad-aware). The most
annoying thing is the large black and red SPYWARE INFECTION notice that has
replaced my wallpaper (formerly a group of bighorn sheep). When I try to
restore this in the Display icon of the Control panel, I find the function
that allows for selection of " background " to be frozen. Pretty much
everything else works, although the Task Manager seems to be disabled. Could
someone steer me in the right direction to undue this invasion? My paltry
technical resources lead me to suspect that a file or registry key was
altered, but I have no clue how to troubleshoot these things. Any help would
be greatly appreciated.
Thanx

I'd try
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx if
that doesn't help
http://www.lavasoft.com/ and both have free tools
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html although I'd only recommend
running one in the background, Microsoft's one seems better at this job.

Windows XP Basic >> adware,trojans,dialers,etc.
If you have SpyAxe, PSGuard, Smitfraud, Sinnaka Advertisments or detections
for Puper or Alemod that can not seem to be removed automatically, please
try this automated removal tool.
AntiPuper v1.0 by secured2k
http://secured2k.home.comcast.net/tools/AntiPuper.exe
What does this tool do?
This tool will attempt to delete several known Trojan files. These files are
modified by the malware authors and encrypted to avoid detection.
Fortunately, many of these tend to use the exact same file names. If the
files are in use, locked, protected, etc, this program will schedule Windows
to remove the files upon restarting.
This program will also remove some common security policies that are changed
by viruses and worms. Policies that lock out your desktop changes, windows
update, Windows Firewall, Explorer Run policies, Registry editing, and more
are all reset.
Finally, if you have an infected Alemod WININET.DLL file, this program will
try to copy a clean version from your Windows File Protection folder and
replace the bad copy on restart. If a backup copy can not be found, the tool
will quickly look for McAfee Antivirus files and attempt to clean a copy of
the file to replace the bad one on reboot. If all of this fails, you will
need to manually replace/clean your WININET.DLL file.

Steve,
I've had the exact same problem.... eminating from some program called
"spysherrif". I've run the suggested Microsoft AntiSpyWare Beta program which
found several registry problems but I still have the blue screen blocking my

How have you gone... any fixes yet?

hey Steve and Pat - I just had the same prob. It is a fake message and hard
to get rid of. You have to start your puter in safe mode and then run the
program that detected it. I have Spyware Doctor and once i did this it
removed the red and black message. Good Luck

- Windows XP Hardware >> Optical Mouse Blue USB and PS/2 Compatible not detected by Win XPHi,
I just bought a Microsoft Optical Mouse, and first installed it using my USB port. The mouse worked fine under Windows XP Professional.
But my box is a dual-boot system, running both Win XP and linux. I was unable to get the USB connection working under linux, and so I switched to the PS/2 port. Now the mouse works flawlessly under linux, but under Windows XP Professional, the mouse is only detected once in about every 10 boots. Most times, the Intellipoint 4.1 software does not start up, the mouse light stays dark, and no mouse appears in my hardware profile.
Since the mouse and PS/2 hardware work correctly under one OS, I have ruled out a hardware problem.
Since both operating systems are using the exact same bios configuration, I've also ruled out a bios incompatability.
In changing from a USB to PS/2 connection, I've taken the following steps:
- Uninstall the mouse driver in the hardware profile
- Disconnect the PS/2 connection
- Reboot
- Install Intellipoint 4.1 software
- Reboot and then shut down the computer
- Plug in the mouse
- Start the computer
I've also taken these steps, using the above procedure as a guideline:
- Disable Norton Anti-Virus
- Disable Firewall
- Remove all Windows Updates recently installed
- Download all Windows critical updates and service packs available and reinstall
- Plug my old PS/2 mouse in and get it working (it still works perfectly)
- Update Intellipoint 4.1 to Intellipoint 5.0 according to the instructions

I have six computers networked togeather just using a

computers are all the same, AMD Athlon 2400 processors
and have 256 MB of RAM.
All we use them for is to use the internet, Microsoft
Access and nortons antivirus run in the background.
The backend of the microsoft access file is stored on one
computer and it has 768 MB of RAM. The backend is linked
to the frontend which is stored on the other computers.
The computers seem to have a hard time staying
connected to the network. One computer will seem to loose
the connection and then has to be restarted in order to
regain it again. Three computers are using Access 2003
and the other three is using Access xp.
