If I restore to a date prior to when I downloaded SP2,
will I have to download it again, or will it still be
installed?
What about other downloaded applications/programs? Will
they "go" or still be there.

no resolution. One post was regarding a support case #
SRZ040417001182 . the person said that he was able to

- Windows XP Setup >> WIndows In-Place Upgrade ProblemsHi,
I was running WIn XP Pro when it went down with some type
of DLL error. I searched the knowledgebase for a
solution which was an in-place upgrade. The problem is
that about half way through the install, the progress
stops because of a pop-up box reading "unregmp2.exe -
entry point not found". I can not get rid of the box to
proceed.

- Windows XP Network >> XPProSP2 on Win2003Srvr ProblemI have a network with a Windows 2003 server as my DC and it is running AD,
DNS and DHCP for about 15 Win2KPro workstaions. This works fine.
I am trying to get a WinXPPro onto my network domain (WMP1). When I try to
join from the XP computer I get an error that a DC for the domain WMP1 could
not be contacted.
I ran the Network Diagnostics tool in XP and it reported that a ping to its
own IP address timed out. I don't understand why.

- customize >> Exit Windows music starts, then gets cut offI loaded a customized "exit windows" sound that is 10
seconds long, and when the computer goes to shut down it
only plays the first 3 seconds and then cuts it off and
shuts down. Is there anyway I can have it play the full
clip to the end?

- Windows XP >> Can SP1 affect e-mail?I recently reinstalled my XP Professional OS to clear up
some problems. I then downloaded SP1. I am now having an
intermittant problem accessing my outgoing server for e-
mail. Could SP1 be causing a problem?

- Windows XP Network >> How do you assign permissions to local network users on other m/cs?I expect this sounds like a daft question, but it has had me puzzled for
some time after I began experimenting with file sharing and a new home
network.
Setting up a network via a router, between laptop and pc, I found that the
pc had access to the laptop's shared folder but the laptop could not access
files on the pc. [pc runs XP Pro: laptop XP Home.]
Experimenting with the permissions via the security tab on the pc's folder,
I found that I could only specify users on the pc. No provision seems to
have been made to give a permission to a user on another m/c.
The only way I could get around this was to add 'everyone' to the
permissions, which seemed a pretty dumb way to achieve the desired share.
Eventually I went back to square one, and ran the network set up wizard on
both machines again, and indeed both could then see the other's shared
folder. However, on checking the permissions, I find that the wizard too
has achieved this by simply adding 'everyone' to the permissions list!
How can I get around this and specify only particular users of a second
machine to be able to access the first, when there seems to be no way to
enter details of another m/c in either the permissions or the map drive
dialogues?
Apologies, but to a newbie on the subject, this all seems rather counter
intuitive compared with other Windows functions/facilities.
Grateful to anyone who can explain this for me.

I am running XP Pro and have noticed recently that the settings I place on
the icons in my notification area keep losing their settings. By this I mean,
If I go into the properties and select "always show", at a later date I
notice they are not showing; and the setting has changed to "hide when
inactive".
Any ideas why this is happening. This usually happens after the computer has
been restarted, eg power cut.

audit. It says in properties. Ip Sec Services failed to
get a complete list of network interfaces on the machine,

Which should I buy to play first-person shooters? I typically play DooM III,
Halo, and The Sims 2. I love these games, but none of them run very well on
the card I have. I ran 3DMark03 and I got a really low score. The FPS was
always around 17, 12, and 9. Help me out... Which should I get?

Windows XP >> What do you want to do?
"What do you want Windows to do?" I am so tired of being asked this
question...by an operating system for Gawd's sake! Every time I insert
a CD, DVD, USB drive, blank or not, this question pops up. What I want
is for Windows to butt out, I can take care of what I want without
Bill's helpers butting in. I always click on "Take no action", always
check the box that says "Always do this", not that it's always there
to check, yet the very next time up it pops again, "What do..." Surely
there must be some registry tweak that can kill off this pop-up? Maybe
it doesn't bother anyone else, but if anyone knows how to do it I'd be
eternally grateful.

Easiest and quickest way : download TweakUI for XP (aka Powertoys)
from Microsoft - you can nominate which drives have/not auto run.

In Windows Explorer right click on the *removable* drive in question
and select 'Properties'. Then select the 'Autoplay' tab. Under Autoplay
left click the 'Select an action to perform' bullet style check box and
then left click on 'Take no action' in the presented list. Left click on
both 'Apply' and then 'OK' to exit.
This only applies to the drive you originally right clicked in Explorer
so repeat the process as needed for other removable drives.

- Windows XP >> Net Use Problem - "System Error 66"I'm trying to set up a user in my office to print from a DOS based program to
a networked printer. The computer is running Windows XP Pro on a Novell
Netware network. The printer is connected "standard tcp/ip port"
I've tried net use LPT1: \\computername\printernam /persistent:yes
to capture the printer but all I get is System error 66.
What am I doing wrong?

- Windows XP Support >> Winlogon Error with Auto Screen SaverI've seen others with similar messages but mine is unique that it occurs
whenever my windows screensaver (doesn't matter which pattern) engages in the
time frame I designate.
Just as the screensaver starts to open, I get an error message saying "The
instruction at â??0x00000000â?? referenced memory at â??0x00000000â??. The memory
could not be â??readâ??."
The error occurs whether I password protect my screensaver or not.

- Windows XP Network >> Accessing network driveI am operating a small Microsoft network of 2 computers both using Windows XP
SP2. Each computer is a member ofthe same workgroup. I am attempting to do a
late night backup from one to the other that continuily fails. I get an
error message that the destination drive is not available. If I attempt to
run the backup manually, it fails also but if I manually open the destination
drive with explorer, which I can, then attempt the backup it works fine. Any
ideas on what is going on or how to correct it???

Y es que la Sección Séptima de la Audiencia Provincial de Alicante, con
sede en Elche, ha confirmado la sentencia absolutoria que dictó en su día
un Juzgado Penal de Orihuela, por la que se absolvía a los responsables de
un pequeño negocio de informática de Torrevieja. Dicho negocio había sido
denunciado por Microsoft, empresa que se valió "de un detective
privado -como se resalta en las actuaciones- para conseguir por la
denunciante en aquel momento, que los acusados le presupuestaran y
construyeran un pc con software que no ha satisfecho los debidos tributos,
[lo que] podría estar casi en el borde del delito provocado", según afirma
la propia sentencia...
De este modo los tribunales españoles han puesto en su sitio a la
multinacional, mediante una sentencia que pone punto y final a un proceso
de más de nueve años. Un proceso del que ha sido víctima una pequeña
empresa española, que quizás podría ahora a su vez iniciar acciones
judiciales frente a Microsoft por los perjuicios causados.
De ser ése el caso, los tribunales decidirán en el ámbito jurídico. En lo
que se refiere a los aspectos éticos de la cuestión, tienen la palabra
nuestros lectores.

my AGP texture acceleration as 'not avaliable,' even tho
it shows up in Win98, is there some setting that is
different from Win98 to winXP that would have fudged this

Microsoft have broken most of the rules with the latest update for this
module.
It pops up a window that says there's an update available, you can answer
yes or no, or cancel
If you take Yes, it downloads, installs, and then ***WITH NO OPTION AT
ALL**** reboots the machine. If you have any other task or application open,
it will be aborted, and the machine WILL reboot, there is NO OPTION TO DEFER
the reboot.
I've seen some unfriendly patches in my time, this one is about the worst,
in that it gives no indication as to where it comes from, what it's changing,
or why, and then has the potential to completely disrupt the user's work and
activities, as it forces a reboot without the option. That's not just
unfriendly, that's downright arrogant and nasty, and goes against the concept
of safe updates on line. The only reason this did not bite too hard is that
my normal on line session does not have admin settings, so I had to change to
another account to run it, which meant that I had very little else active at
the time, had this happened in a "user" session, I would have been seriously
inconvenienced, at best, and maybe worse, as this application should not have
assumed that it could reboot without checking first.
I shall not be trusting M$ in future on this, there is NO WAY that a patch
of this nature should reboot without first asking the user to confirm that
it's OK.

- Windows XP >> Language Proofing Tools for WindowsXPI just bought a new computer and deliberately chose the WindowsXP operating
system so that I could install my Language Proofing Tools for XP. I need to
frequently write in Portuguese and require those dictionaries. My computer
came with WindowsXP but when I try to install the Proofing Tools program I
get a notice that WindowsXP must "first" be installed, which of course it is,
and the installation is aborted.
Anyone have any ideas on this?

- Windows XP >> two monitors - one computerYup I know, its a cakewalk to set up a second monitor, but not in this
instance. I have a system set up near a wall in an office(A), a neat
hole in the wall through which passes a keyboard, mouse and monitor
cables to a setup in room B.
User A has no issues and can access whatever he wants, but user B only
has an *extension* of the windows desktop, and no Start button.
Unfortunately, he cant see monitor A so has no way of launching
applications and placing their window on his monitor. Even if he uses
the windows key, it only opens the program menu on the OTHER monitor,
which of course doesnt help him.
I downloaded UltraMon because I thought it would do the job for me, but
all that achieves is to place a taskbar on the bottom of the second
screen - I want to 'mirror' the two monitors such that anything
displayed on one is also on the other. I *did* manage to make that
happen, once, but after a reboot it was back to normal and I cant see a
way of doing it again. Any advice? (Except buy a second base unit - for
long winded reasons that wont work in this example)

Let's say you wanted to add or remove something from it.
For instance.. in my case, I have a Intel Video chipset
and the graphics options show up in the desktop right
click menu.
This slows down the opening speed of the actual right
click menu.
It's driving me nuts.
It would also be good to know how to add shortcuts or snd
to> locations.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Sound Recording ProblemsThe recording function on my PC is not recording sounds
through the microphone.
The microphone is working.
The sound card is working.
The problem has occured before and a microsoft certified
dealer reinstalled the recording devices.
I would like to fix this problem myself.
These are the additional messages/issues experienced:
Through the control panel, the Sounds and Audio Devices
Properties application is launched. Choosing the Voice
tab, the Test hardware... button is selected.
After going through a timed diagnostic, two alert
windows are displayed:
1st. "An error occurred during DirectPlay Voice setup.
The error code is 0x8004005."
2nd. "Windows cannot execute DpvSetup.exe, use Add/Remove
Programs control panel to install."
There is no obvious method of installing this component
through the 'Change or Remove Programs' button or
with 'Add/Remove Windows Components'
I did find a Microsoft article on their Support &
Troubleshooting page when I did a search on the
phrase 'dpvsetup.exe':

DPVSetup.exe, Use Add/Remove Programs Control Panel to
Install
This was exactly the error message I received but when I
tried the fix suggested in the article, (i.e., the
correction), I went into the Sounds and Audio Devices
Properties, chose the voice tab and hit the Advanced
button under Voice Playback which opens an Advanced Audio
Properties window. The article recommends: "On the
Performance tab, move the Hardware Acceleration slider at
least one position to the right."
My tab is already as far right as it can go.
Any Suggestions?

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Boottime defragDid a boot time defrag & now Windows XP doesn't start up
anymore. Immediately after the memory check & drive
detection, the screen goes grey & the hard disk stops.
End of story. I used Executive Diskeeper (don't know the
version number because I can't get into the PC.).
Does anybody know what I can do to get around this?

that when I try to download something it wont let me.
When I right click and then go to Save Target As... an
error message appears. How can I stop this from happening?
