On our sharepointsite.net site when we went to open a document from a document library a dialog opened asking
You are about to open Name: xxxxxx From: xxxxxxx
How would you like to open this file Read Only Edit
i have just setup our own sharepoint server and when you open a document to goes straight to read only mode rather than asking how to open it
how do i get our site to ask this before opening the document
Regards, Stephen.

This is actually a client setting, not a server setting so it would have to be done on each machine that access SPS

If this is a client setting, how do you enable it I have enabled it for my user account, but have no idea how! It would be nice to know how so that I can have my other users enable the option.
Thanks

you need to open Windows Explorer, and under the Tools menu select Folder Options and then go to the File Types tab. Find the extension for the file type you want to modify, click the "Advanced" button and then unselect the "Browse in the same window" button to have the file open in its native application

Hello,
In fact I have the same question. On one PC I get the dial box in which I'm asked how I would like to open this file ... in read-only or in edit mode. The switch you suggested does not force this question to pop-up for I have changed this setting on other PC's and the dialog box does not appear. I'm indeed convinced that it is a PC setting but the question is which
Especially after a search this question is useful for after having found a specific document it is normal that one would be able to or read the fiel or edit the file.
Best regards,
Danny

Enable "Require documents to be checked out before they can be edited " option in the document library > Settings > Version Settings.

I too have the same issue - but the suggestion regarding the View in Browser tick box doesn't apply either.
Surely there must be someway of making all documents act in a consistent way when the link is clicked rather than having to make a change on each client PC

To all,
By accident I found how this behaviour is created. Now I'm searching for a solution...
Take a look at http://technet2.microsoft.com/Office/en-us/library/0dee24b3-09af-485b-b5ed-d4b879dcc8f61033.mspx (Changes in the 2007 Office system). There you'll find that once you install (locally) any Office 2007 application or component (either suite, Project, Visio, or ...), you'll receive this dialog box.
I try to find a way to provide users with an easy way for opening files, with the ability to edit. Instead of pressing the drop down arrow and choose for either check out or edit in Office App.

I have the same issue and have not been able to find the right answer. The diaologue box asking me to open or edit appears, but it does not appear on my co-workers computers. It is about a 50-50 split as to who receives the prompt. This leads me to believe it is a client configuration.
Please, I need help to fix this and have not been able to see anything out there.

Add a Web Site to the List of Trusted Sites.
On the Internet Explorer Tools menu, click Internet Options.
Click the Security tab, and then click in Trusted sites.
Click the Sites button.
In the Add this Web site to the zone box, place your site address.
Click the Add button.
Click Ok

This does not work. It is not a site permission error, users are able to access the site, the just do not get the dialogue box prompting them to either Read Only or Edit. I receive the correct box, however they do not.

I figured out that it had nothing to do with a setting. In order to have the check out feature appear as the pop-up you need to have an Office 2007 component installed. I had Sharepoint Designer installed on my machine which is why it was receiving the dialogue. The other machines did not have an Office 2007 component installed.
Hope this helps.
