Hi, I haven't got Frontpage 2003 neither sharepoint designer, therefore I am trying to use VS 2005 to edit WSS pages.

In the "Open Web Site" dialogue box, under the "Web site Location", I typed "http://myServer/default.aspx"

whereby "http://myServer/default.aspx" is the address to access my WSS site.

Upon clikcing on "Open". I am getting eror message saying:

unable to open the web "http://myServer/default.aspx". An error occured accessing your windows sharepoint services site files. Authors - if authoring a web server, please contact webmaster for this server's web site. Webmasters - please see the server's application event log for more details

and the events log says:

The account that the current worker process is running under does not have SeTcbPrivilege privilege, the anonymous password sync feature and the Digest authentication feature are disabled.

Can someone please help me to resolve this problem as I am really stuck with this thing. Thanks so much.

you cant use visual studio to open sharepoint sites. a sharepoint site isnt mapped to the file system list regular asp.net site - all of the files are actually in the sql database. Only frontpage knows how to access the database and manipulate it when you point it to a site.

If you want to manually do it, you can open a site using web folders in internet explorer (file-open, open as web folder) and then download the files you want to the file system, manipulate them and upload again.

Maybe you should rephrase what you are trying to do, and explain that in a new post. perhaps there is a different way to do it

Thank goodness you told me that if not I would have spent the whole day debugging the problem. Really appreciate your reply.

I have been asked by my manager to have WSS in our company with a deadline and I am very new to WSS struggling for every single thing.

In fact, I am trying to include my company banner on top of the site. Besides that I do have too many things to ask, in my mind. I think I am very lucky to find an WSS expert like you. Thank you so much.

Roughly to run through my queries in my mind at the moment:

1) How to edit the look of the WSS site, the front page especially.

2) After creating a "web site" project in VS 2005 which has a DB connection to retrieve some data, and some web controls like datagrid to display them, how do I deploy it into WSS as a web part, where do I place the DLLs and where do I place the .aspx files

at the moment these would be the most critical task I need to get over with. I REALLY REALLY appreciate your help. Thanks

I did google so much to find the answers but the problem is that, the solutions given are not exactly what I wanted though.

Robet,

If you want to quickly and easily make look and feel changes to SharePoint you should be using SharePoint Designer, it is possible without but gets complicated very quickly.

For the web part development the WSS V3 SDK has answers and walkthroughs including deployment.
