I am trying to use Sharepoint Designer's backup and restore functionality to move a site from one server to another. The backup seems to complete successfully, but when I go to restore the site I get an error that looks like this:

Cannot find C:\Windows\Temp\.......\exportsettings.xml.

Does anyone know how to resolve this problem

I get the same error message. The text on the Microsoft site that explains this (http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepointdesigner/HA100699391033.aspx) contains an alternate method for doing this in SharePoint itself, but it won't work as described in WSS 3.0.

I ended up saving the old site as a template, and then manually moving the data over, of course losing the version history...

Hi, I get the same problem using Sharepoint Designer 2007 Back-up and restore. I tried using STSADM on the command line and this worked well. It seems that

Sharepoint Designer 2007 has bugs that needs to be fixed. Cheers !

Bummer with STSADM is that it does the entire site collection. I'd just like to backup a single site. I noticed a new SMIGRATE.exe seems to be out there, so I'll have to give that a shot.

Thanks.

Sadly no, still don't know a way to do it myself. I don't know if there have been any Office updates since 2007's release though, so maybe they fixed it (but unfortunately, I doubt it.)

I have the same problem. Looks like it's a bug in SharePoint Designer. I have used a couple workarounds.

You can use stsadm -o export/import to backup/restore just a subsite. The only problem with this is that it will update the modified date to the current date and the modified by field to the account running stsadm -import but if this isn't an issue for you, then this could be a workaround.

If you need to retain the modified date fields etc, I have done the following and it seems to work fine.

1. Use stsadm -o export to backup the subsite. use the -cabfile parameter and set it to a value high enough so your backup will be a single file. When specifing the backup filename, use a .cmp extension.

2. Restore the single .cmp file to the new location using SharePoint Designer (Create a new empty web site at the restore location and then restore using the .cmp file). If the .cmp file is large, you may need to increase the max file upload size and/or IIS timeout setting temporarily.

Have fun,

Hi Dexter,

Thanks for the reply. I think using the stsadm.exe will solve my problem. Just too bad the Designer has what appears to be a bug.

Thanks,

GwK

Hi Nakeet,

I misunderstood in other forms that the stsadm backup/restore was the same as import/export. Now that I know they're different I see that the solution does work...well, except that if I use your second solution, so I can keep the modified information, on a subsite it seems to bring over the permission groups from the parent site, not the sub site that I am exporting. My sub site is small enough where I can just recreate the group permissions but it seems odd that the parent groups were moved. Anyway I'll double check that, maybe I messed up somewhere.

Thanks,

GwK

Hi Avery,

This might help with increasing the max upload size (there's a section titled "Configuring Large File Support"):

Hopefully that's what you're looking for...

I'm encountering a similar problem but with a bit of a twist. I completed the backup of the site when we were still on WSS 2.0, and this created a .fwp file that I was able to restore the site with using Sharepoint Designer. It appears that the new file extension for WSS3.0 is .cmp and I'm wondering if I will be able to restore the site.

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi:

Has anyone found a solution for this I can't use the command line tools because the source site (i.e.: the site that was backed up) is hosted by a hosting company. So, all I can do is use sharepoint designer to back up the site. But, the restore isn't working because I'm getting the same error message as the opening post: "Cannot find file c:\windows\temp\....\exportsettings.xml".

Thanks.

I have the same problem using SharePoint Designer 2007. My cmp is about 36MB in size.

I'm trying to make a copy of a hosted web site and restore a copy of it as a subsite to the same site.

This is a hosted WSS site ...so stsadm.exe is not an option.
