I am trying to use Sharepoint Designer's backup and restore functionality to move a site from one server to another. The backup seems to complete successfully, but when I go to restore the site I get an error that looks like this:

Cannot find C:\Windows\Temp\.......\exportsettings.xml.

Does anyone know how to resolve this problem

I'm having the exact same problem. My backup worked fine, saved the .cmp file onto my system, and I receive the same message:

The instructions at http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepointdesigner/HA100699391033.aspx also say you can do this through the web site itself, but the details about "quitting the browser" do not seem appropriate for WSS 3.0.

Error occurred while importing the web http://someweb/site.
Could not find file 'C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\someguid\ExportSettings.xml

Unfortunately, no. There appears to be a new SMIGRATE.EXE for WSS 3.0 out there, but I haven't given that a shot yet to see if that works.

I am having the same problem as everyone else, although I have a bit more information. Some time after the original cmp is saved, and it says the backup is successful, another cmp file appears in the site where the backup was created. Both files are cab archives. Inside the file saved by SharePoint Designer is a series of .dat files starting with 001 and going to around 0AF. The cmp file inside the site starts somewhere after 200 and has the exportsettings.xml and other xml files at the end. If I extract both, then use cabarc to combine them again I get past that error (since I now have the xml files) but it of course at some point finds missing files, as I am missing some 200 dat files from the middle of the backup.

This appears to be a bug in the program, I have tried it in several different sites, and on different servers, and I always get the same results.

Hi All,
i am also getting the same problem. Better we can go for

i) Inbuilt backup/Restore option

ii) Using stsadm for backup/Restore

iii) Taking backup of database

Hi

I had problem in one of my development projects in MOSS 2007

We did the development in one domain which is in our development environment and backed it up.

When we tried to restore/deploy the site in the Client's server which had different domain

We faced the following issues in it

  • All the customization we did on the page was lost
  • Some of the pages went blank
  • After deployment when we tried doing the content approval process the page went blank

Can anyone help me understand what the issue is

Is it not possible to develop a site in one domain and deploy in a server which has a different domain

But i followed the same deployment model in one of my previous projects developed in SPS 2003

Regards,

Madhu

My recommendation would be to use export import feature.

Painless stsadm command line should get you there. It has worked for me.
