- Windows XP >> OEM Licensing QuestionHi there,
Say if we had a PC that had Windows 98 OEM version on it. We then
upgraded to Win XP using a Win XP Upgrade License (Volume License).
If we were to then totally upgrade the hardware, would this still be
legal? Obviously with an OEM version, as far as I know, you are not
supposed to move it or reinstall it to another PC. But now that I've
upgraded it to WinXP Volume License, does the restriction on the 98 OEM
license still carry through?
Kind Regards,
Nev

- Windows XP Support >> STOP ErrorsI have a little network set up that include my Desktop which is
running Windoze XP Home and a Laptop that is running 2000 Pro.
Suddenly the Laptop is refusing to boot up and generating a "STOP
Error" that says that I should enter Safe Mode and remove all the
peripheral hardware that is installed. When I enter Safe Mode I can't
get to a place where I can uninstall the peripherals, which are a 20
gig Pocketech drive, and a MS Wireless Network card. Nothing I do
seems to get this computer to boot past the STOP Error. Anyone know
anything about this type of error?

Unable to use my USB Prodrive on XP Home, It is a Dick
Smith 64M Prodrive Which connects to the front USB ports
of my computer, Have had a lot of problems getting things
to go in the USB ports. Can you give me any leads of where
I can look for this problem? I am led to believe USB only
needs to pluged in to work, It should detect itself, It
does detect it but it is classified UNKNOWN, Also
Unrecognised, I have loaded the drivers that came with it.
Thanking you in advance for your reply.

- Windows XP Support >> WGA and XP ValidationI have a HP desktop which required a recovery operation because of a corrupt
file.
When I attempt to get Windows updates the site requests I validate my XP
copy and the process fails. I have tried all the fixes listed at the site.
Fixing the ActiveX blocks on tools/security.
I get to the express button and than notified to validate which fails and
the update process ends.
HP can only suggest the same fixes at the MS site I have already tried and
MS says they don't support the installation because HP preloaded it.
Anyone have an idea? Is it even important? Is there value to having WGA?
I can manually update which isn't as convenient as the automatic updates.

- Windows XP Support >> XP Desktop Reloads UncontrollablyI have a bizzare problem. Often after individual windows close the entire
desktop goes blank and then reloads like a fresh start up. I've removed all
of the spyware that I can find using three different tools and the problem
persists...it's been going on for months. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

Windows XP Setup >> Prob upgrading to XP Home from ME
When trying to upgrade I received a report stating that my
modem may not work with windows XP. As a result I tried
to use the update program within windows xp setup to
update the setup files.
The problem is that as when the program tells me it is
downloading the updates, the system checks the floppy
drive and then hangs. The small meter on the screen which
signifies activity freezes. The hard drive light stays
lit but without activity.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

- Windows XP >> Cannot logonWhen I start Windows the logon screen comes up as expected. However, when I
try to logon the system simply reboots and brings me back to the logon
screen. What is going on here and how might I solve the problem? I can boot
up in safe mode but when I try to run System Restore, it tells me that
System Restore is turned off for safe mode.
Any ideas as to how one should proceed?

- Windows XP >> XP Loading to Black ScreenWindows XP boots up normally and begins to load with the
bars scrolling horizontally across the screen, theres a
brief glitch in the image, then the screen goes virtually
black with several colored pixels at the top edge, barely
noticeable. The computer is then frozen and must be
unplugged to reboot properly. Windows will load fine in
safe mode, and I have tried several restores to no avail.
Thanks in advance for the help.

- Windows XP >> Uninstalling Windows XPI want to uninstall XP, but I previously had Windows 95,
so I had to use a "New PC" cd. The uninstallation option
isn't in the control panel. How do I uninstall it? Also,
I didn't overwrite the old W95 files, so they're still
there.

- Windows XP >> Task scheduler doesn't run after WinME->WinXP HE upgradeI've been fussing with problem for weeks now - for some reason Task
Scheduler apparently will not recognize my administrator account - a note on
the Knowledge Base indicates that there have been problems of a different
sort when upgrading from Win98/WinME to WinXP.
Have tried various work arounds, tweaks, registry edits suggested here - the
main problem seems to be that when I did the upgrade, the system
"remembered" a former username, even though that account didn't exist after
the upgrade. I have tried renaming my administrator account to that name,
but that doesn't help.
Another possibility that has occurred to me is that Norton Antivirus and
Internet Security may have something to do with this, and I am thinking
about uninstalling them and re-installing - but that seems like a long shot,
and since I'm on about my third over-the-net upgrade with Symantec, I'm
concerned I might have to go out and buy a complete new set if they won't
let me upgrade from the original disk.
Everything else works fine - just this one problem with Task Scheduler,
which is really annoying as it prevents automatic security updates from
running by themselves.
Any thoughts?

- Windows XP >> Forgot winXP passwordMy son needs help. He is 14 and lost (can't remember) his
XP Home Edit. password on his computer. He is the only
one running as admin. to keep his sister from getting in
to his programs and homework. First, how do we reset the
password? I have searched the web and came up with two
solutions; one is to literally *hack* the password (seems
harsh to me), or to use the "control passwords2" command
(this seems moot as you must have admin. to use the
command, see above). Second, what is the best way to
setup the login so this won't happen again? Dad's
computer reputation is at stake here.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> curser stops for few secondsI see where this question was asked before but didn't see
any answer. Just got back from a trip, fired up my home
computer which worked fine when I left 4 days ago but now
the cursor - in any program it seems - especially in
Adobe Photoshop though - does not function smoothly. It
keeps stopping for a few seconds. Checked the roller
ball - no dust bunnies there. Any ideas?
