- Windows XP Network >> Initial Wireless ConnectionHello:
I am new to wireless. I ran the wizzard just to see what it would do. Not
much different than manual setup.
Anyway where I am lost is, when you add a new connection to your prefered
list and it has wep enabled the first time you connect you get a drop down
box asking where you are connecting from, Home, Office, Away, or Custom
Settings.
I can't seem to find out what the differences are in these choices.
Can someone tell me what settings change by choosing different options
there?
Thanks

- Windows XP >> Right-Click on Desktop leads to no goodI've got XP Pro on a Dell Pentium 2.4 with 768MB of RAM. System seemed to be
working fine last night. Tonight it behaves OK, unless I right-click on the
Desktop. I get an hourglass that stays forever. I can click something
else--folder, Start, etc--and that will open, but nothing inside that reacts
to the mouse. The mouse is not hung, but shows the hourglass over the
desktop. If I logoff and back on, it "unhangs" until I do the right-click. I
did a system
restore from night before last, but that doesn't cure it. It seems to be OK
in Safe Mode. Unless the virus detector updated itself, there should have
been no difference between the system the two nights.
Anybody got any ideas?

- Windows XP Basic >> help with deleted items pleaseHi' everyone,
I am asking this question for a friend, she tells me that some emails
particularly mine to her, end up in her deleted items folder. She uses
Outlook Express as do I. & I.E., XP Home SP2. Would someone kindly be able
to advise me how I can help her sort this out, if you think it's a corrupt
file then I would appreciate instructions how to correct it as I am fairly
new to computers also.
Many thanks for any advice,
Casey.

- Windows XP Setup >> sound recording problemThanks in advance to anyone who can help. I'm trying to record my
acoustic guitar with a PC (Dell, 512mghz, Pentium III, Sony microphone
plugged into back, Windows XP Pro, Audacity Music Editor). The problem
is I can't get any playback volume high enough. I've turned all
possible controls from Audacity and Control Panel to highest settings
for both recording and playback.
I still can barely hear my playing. The microphone is about 8" from the
sound-hole. Any clues!?
Thanks! Brian

- Windows XP Update >> Cannot Install KB933369Greetings.
My windows updater is working fine for everything but this daylight savings
one, KB 933360. As I live in New Zealand which is one of the affected
countries I would like to install it. Each time it tries to install it fails.
I've also tried downloading it manually using...
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/dst_hu3?Submit1=Download
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/933360
The windows updater seems to download it alright but fails to install with
this error, taken from the final line of the update log.
AutomaticUpdates Failure Content Install Installation Failure: Windows
failed to install the following update with error 0x80070643: Update for
Windows Vista (KB933360).
When I click for help on this error it tells me to ensure that the office
source engine is set to automatic with delay instead of manual. I have
changed this and it has made no difference.
Any thoughts on why this update is not installing. Other ones in the same
list have installed fine. It's only this one giving me grief.

- Windows XP Network >> Not being able to set up workstation on NetworkHi, I'm trying to connect a new workstation to a very small network (3
computers) The computers are linked via Ethernet and all of them are sharing
Windows XP.
The new workstation is also using Windows XP. When I setup the computer, I
made it a member of the group, by choosing that on the workstation and I
gave the computer a unique name.
I can connect to the Internet via this network, but when I try to see any of
the other computers, it doesn't even show them and I get an error message
stating that I'm not allowed on that workgroup, i.e. it is not accessable
and to see the network administrator (which I me.) I tried in the looking in
the mirror, but that didn't seem to help much! :-)
I feel like I'm missing something fundamentally. It is a peer to peer
network, i.e. no server and what could be the problem?
Would anyone please help me?
Thanks!

- Windows XP Hardware >> Questions about using an Apple 20" Cinema Display with a PCHello everyone. I have spent the last few hours searching google for
some answers to these questions without much luck, so I thought I
would post them out there and see if anyone can help.
I have a Pentium 4 3.0 GHz, with an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro video card. I
am running Windows XP.
I am interested in picking up an Apple 20" Cinema Display. I know
some people have had some luck with this (especially with the ATI
cards), but I still have some concerns:
1) The native resolution for this monitor is 1680x1050, and although
the ATI drivers support it, some people have reported problems seeing
anything on the monitor until Windows boots (thereby precluding access
to the bios settings). Can anyone confirm if this is true? I would
have thought the PC would try to put the monitor into some other
resolution that it could handle.
2) What happens if I pick a game and try to play it at 1024x768 or
1280x1024? Does the game get centered in the monitor or does it get
stretched? Is that something that is configurable?
3) Has anyone had success hooking up an Apple Cinema Display to
multiple PCs that have DVI outputs? I have read that some people had
problems hooking the monitor to a DVI switch box using the ADC to DVI
connector. I know Gefen has an ADC switcher with the ADC to DVI
converter built in to it. Has anyone used that with any success? I
noticed that some switch boxes claim to "support" 1600x1200
resolution. Both Belkin and Gefen's lower end models say that. Does
that mean that they would not be able to support the 1680x1050
resolution of the Apple display?
Thanks in advance for any answers you all can provide. They are much
appreciated!

- Windows XP Setup >> corrupt installer? My installation of Norton programs (Antivirus 2003 pro &
Ghost 2003) somehow got buggered and I believe the
Windows Installer msi files are to blame. No matter what
I attempt, I cannot re-install these applications. In the
Event Viewer, I have a number of EventIDs 7034, "The
Windows Installer service terminated unexpectedly..." I
can uninstall and re-install other applications without
problem, it just seems to be NAV and Ghost. I have
scanned for viruses using Symantec's on-line scanning
ActiveX tool, but none were found. Any ideas how to fix
this such that I can get a fully-functioning NAV and
Ghost again?
Thanks, Dave.

Windows XP Setup >> Install WinXP Pro!
Hi Arpan,
If you are running XP Setup by booting from the install CD, shortly after
accepting the EULA you will be presented with a listing of the partitions on
your hard drive.....highlight the partition into which you want to install
XP.
If you are running XP Setup from within Win2K, at "Welcome to Windows Setup"
choose "New Installation (Advanced)" as Installation Type, accept the EULA,
key in product serial number and click on Next. At the next screen, **Click
on the "Advanced Options" button, then select "I want to choose the install
drive letter...."**. If you don't select Advanced Options>I want to choose
the install drive letter, XP will be installed overtop of the existing
operating system!
Regards,

- Windows XP Network >> xp prof internet connection probleI just installed window xp prof. and a Linksys 10/100 pci adaptor nic. My ISP is able to see the cable modem but not my computer. When xp trys to renew the IP address I get an error message. The ISP and modem software tell me to check the cable connection between the modem and the cpu. I have tried all of the suggestions of disconnecting power and rebooting, reinstalling the nic driver, and at the cmd prompt ipconfig /renew. They even had me try moving the nic to another port. All of the technical support personel have eliminated problems with their hardware. I have no idea of what to try next. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Jeff

DNS request timed out

*** Request to [192.168.0.1] time-out
I've verfied that DNS works on the box running ICS and if I manually change
the DNS to use an outside server on the client everything works. I even
tried installing a third party DNS server on the box and it said that DNS was
already running on port 53. For testing I disabled the firewall and that
didn't solve the problem either.

- Windows XP Setup >> Windows NT4.0 to W2k3 Migration (Non-Active Directory)I currently have two NT4.0 servers (PDC/BDC) in a Domain setting. We have
ordered new hardware and would like to upgrade the user accounts (SAM
database) and some data across to the new hardware. When all is said and
done, we would like to the new hardware to be a mirror of the old hardware
(i.e.: I.P. addresses, computer names, data -- less some of the current
applications. Upgraded versions to existing applications will be installed
separately). A few questions come to mind that you may be able to assist me
with answering/resolving:
1. What is the most efficient way to accomplish this?
2. Would this have to be performed in an offline setting and would the
ADMT2.0 work although I do not want to configure AD.
3. In order to to configure the new hardware in a Domain environment, would
I have to run AD?
Thanks very much for your response.

said that my pc doesn't support Hard Drive that's larger than 137GB. I went
through the installation guide and found out there is two solutions. One is
Ultra ATA/133-compatible PCI card, the other solution is to install
Microsoft SP1. I had it installed and how come it's not working? after the
installation, the hard drive is limited to 137MB, even worse, it dropped to
127GB after i formatted it. It's a totally 33 GB lost!!! I am sure my pc is
capable for 160GB HD, can anyone help me?
