- Windows XP Security >> Split-second apparent log-on/log-off of accounts when system is idle.I'm running Windows XP Pro on a Gateway 700XL, 18.1 inch flat panel screen.
When my system is sitting idle, meaning some of the accounts may be logged
into, but no one is using the PC, XP goes into a security mode -- i.e. users
remain logged in, but the systems goes back to the initial splash screen and
requires users to log back in using a password.
This is all fine and exactly how I want things to be .....
My question is about what seems to be happening when all is apparently idle.
Every couple of minutes, one of the accounts seems to go active -- for a
split second -- it logs back into one of the accounts, shows the desktop of
that account, then logs out and goes back to the initial splash screen.
What is causing this? Is this an XP feature, or has my system been hacked?
Is someone else logging in causing this, or is this normal behavior on XP
Pro? Has anyone else noticed this behavior? It doesn't happen on my other
system running XP Pro (Dell Notebook).
Any help/advice is appreciated.

- Windows XP Setup >> some XP newbie questions1. I just did my first complete system scan on a new XP Home computer with
Norton Anti-Virus. I've been putting it off because I expected it to take a
long time. It did - 42 min 10 sec - 191,259 files scanned. Why so many
files? Is that normal? My Windows 98se computer only has about 25,000 files.
2. Hard drive memory isn't recovered immediately if I delete files. For
example I cleaned up the hard drive by deleting a lot of junk files
yesterday, and here's what hard drive properties has reported as free RAM
subsequently:
10.21 GB free at 15:15pm Aug 26th
11.42 GB free at 21:29pm Aug 26th
13.38 GB free at 07:32am Aug 27th
13.14 GB free at 09:27am Aug 27th
Resetting the computer seems to have no effect on this. Is this delay
normal? What is causing it? Can the free RAM be recovered immediately rather
than delayed? How?
3. I'd like to keep a few selected system recovery points and delete the
others. For example I will probably keep the first one, right after windows
was installed clean. Then perhaps 6 more at various intervals. Is it
possible to set up my own customized automatic system recovery scheme to
suit my preferences? If not, how can I manually delete individual recovery
points? Presumably deleting recovery points will free up a lot of files and
RAM. Is there a delay before that free RAM appears, and how long is the
delay?
Thanks,

- Windows XP Network >> XP dialer fails to disconnect per set idle timeThis computer is running Windows XP Professional and over
a small network sharing its modem with some other PCs when
connected. It is regularly updated by your autodownload.
In Control Panel/Network Connections/Properties/Options I
have configured an idle time of 5 minutes.
Recently after dialup connection is made and the
connection becomes idle, it fails to disconnect in the
prescribed time. In fact it can be on line for over an
hour where upon I have to disconnect myself.
As I used to have this facility I would be pleased if you
could advise what has changed and how to reinstate.
Many thanks,

- Windows XP Hardware >> USB mouse wireless problemHello Forum,
I'm using a gateway PC pentium III, running under WinXP SP2.
The pc have only 5 USB ports, 3 in the rear and 2 in the front for USB
mouse and USB keyboard.
No any PS2 connectors.
Now, I bought a LABTEC wireless desktop (keyboard and mouse) but was
not USB, so I connected it through a PS2 to USB adaptor. The keybaord
and the mouse WORKED but erraticaly.
So I bought a MICROSOFT WIRELESS DESKTOP 700.
The keyboard works fine, but the mouse is dead.
In other PC, the set works fine.
I also removed all the files and registry keys of the old LABTEC set,
but still nothing.
I remember that ONLY once, the mouse responded when WinXP was starting
up for a few seconds and since then, nothing...
Please help!!!
Thanks

- Windows XP Support >> My ComputerI have small flashdrive plugged into my USB port (WinXPsp2) and someone told
me I could right click on My Computer and click Eject in order to safely
remove the flashdrive, instead of right clicking on the flashdrive's icon in
lower right of screen and clicking "safely remove hardware."
However, when I right click on My Computer (on my desktop) I do not see
EJECT. I see: Open, Explore, Send, Map Network Drive, Disconnect Network
Drve, Create Shortcut, Delete, Rename, and Properties.
However, if I just click on My Computer, a My Computer screen opens and on
the right side I see my flashdrive in drive E: and when I right click on that
I can then see the EJECT.
Why don't I see the EJECT when I right click on the My Computer on my desktop?
Is there something wrong with my computer or WinXPsp2?
Please advise and thank you.

- Windows XP >> user account loses profileI have XP with the family login. My account is an administrator account, my
two children have limited accounts.
When my son Scott logged in recently, he was unable to access his My
Documents account, Outlook did not show his mail, contacts, etc., and other
Office apps came up with the "first time/enter name and initials" look.
I logged in as administrator and noticed that under Documents and Settings
there was now a new folder called TEMP with the standard set of folders
underneath, which it appears that the SCOTT user account is now linked to.
I, as the adminstrator can access files under the Documents and
Settings\SCOTT folders.
How can I reassociate the SCOTT user account with the proper folders and
settings?

- Windows XP Security >> Logong then instant logoffTrying to fix a friends PC running XP Home. the main ID

even sticking the drive in another PC to get the data at
the very least. I can get at the contents of the 2 kids
profiles as they are "limited users" but I can't get at
the main profiles data.
Anyone know a way around this or have seen this condition

any assitance would be greatly appreciated

Windows XP Setup >> BartPE with Intel Pro/100 VE
Computer is a Dell Dimension E310
Windows is Media Center Edition SP2 (a version of XP) with all updates
NIC is a Intel PRO/100 VE
Backup program is Acronis True Image Home 9.0
BartPE is v3.1.10a.
I wish to make a CD from which I can boot, access a backup on a shared
drive and restore the computer. My plans were to use BartPE with the
plugin for Acronis Home Image. I have tried a lot of different
approaches and read all information on the web. In all cases either I
get a message that the network drivers cannot be installed or it locks
up trying to install the network drivers.
Any ideas?

My thoughts are to check which Windows version the BartPE disc was built
from. If it was built from an old Windows version then it may have problems
with recent hardware.

- Windows XP >> Windows XP FaxI have a Sony TR2 laptop. This machine only has 2 x USB and no serial or
parallel ports. Is this why the category "Ports" does not appear in Device
Manager?
I have set up a dialup connection and the modem works fine that it connects
to the internet. But when I use Windows XP fax, there is no connection and
I cannot send fax.
When I check on the properties of "fax" in Control Panel, the "Ports" tab is
NOT there. Is this the reason why I cannot send fax?
Appreciate any help because I really need to have the fax function. Thank
you.

- Windows XP Support >> Uninstalling SQL Server 2005Hello,
I installed MS Accounting 2008 some time ago which I never used so I
uninstalled it. Now I also see something called MS SQL Server 2005, Native
Client and VSS Writer. I have the feeling they were installed alongside MS
Accounting 2008, but don't want to make a mistake if they have some kind of
other use on my PC. I also see "Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable".
Could they have some other use? My PC has MS Office on it and we use email,
but not much more than that in terms of business type software.
Thanks.

- Windows XP Security >> Windows XP SP2 FirewallAfter installing Win XP SP2 my XP machine could not

configuration changes. After uninstalling SP2 the machine
can now connect to the router. Anybody seeing anything
similar? Any ideas on a solution?
I'm in no hurry to re-install SP2 but would like to know
the configuration issues involved. What did I miss?
Thanks.

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> Capturing video from Instant TVI am trying to capture video in movie maker from my ADS Tech Instant
TV. I can capture the video easily but there is no sound. I was
wondering if this is a problem with movie maker or the ADS device.
Instant TV comes with a ULead program that allows capture in various
formats, mainly to create dvd's. That program captures video and sound
and creates a dvd that plays in the computer or with the tv dvd
player.
The ulead program can capture as an avi file that imports to movie
maker but there is quality lost and other problems in the conversion.
The sound is missing in the movie maker capture both in the preview
box and in the resultant wmv file.
This appears to be a simple thing and the the instant tv box works
with other programs. movie maker recognizes the picture so why no
sound
Any suggestions

- Windows XP >> Open/Minimized Windows Don't Appear on TaskbarOk, here's a strange one:
My friend's family computer is running Windows XP (I can't recall whether it
is Home or Pro or what SP it is running, but I can get this information if
necessary). Whenever they launch any application, etc., it should normally
appear in the taskbar regardless of whether it is maximized, regular,
minimized, etc., but it is not appearing there at all. Therefore, if they
minimize the window, it just seems to disappear altogether and the only way
to bring it back is with ALT-TAB. I've tried the obvious (such as a toolbar
on the taskbar is taking up the entire taskbar, etc.), but none of the
obvious solutions seem to be correct or fix the problem. Any help is greatly
appreciated! Thanks.

- Windows XP Basic >> The Windows\Repair filesHi all,
After some troubles getting my PC back alive I'd like to understand and
ask a few things regarding the windows\repair folder.
As I understand it contains copies of 5 important registry related files
(sam, security, software, default, system) that reside in
c:\windows\system32\config. These copies are created at the time of
the Setup of XP.
So, they are (in my case) quite unusable to get my system back alive in
case of a corrupted registry - as I found out the hard way. The reason
is that 1 year after installing XP, I made some drastic changes to my
hardware, such as installing a RAID adapter. The copies of my registry
in \windows\repair don't know about this.
Luckily I had a recent Norton Ghost image of my PC in which I also had
the 5 files and I used them to get the PC back alive.
Anyway, there is also a subfolder \windows\repair\regback in which there
are again copies of these 5 files (sam, security, software, default,
system) and those are more recent. But not "very" recent neither!
How and during which process are these copies made? And how can I force
this?
In Windows 2000 there was in the Backup-tool a "Recovery disk" option
and I know that it made copies of the registry files into that
\windows\repair\regback folder.
But how can I do this in XP?
I've tried to copy the files manually to a safe place... I can't because
they are "in use".
Can someone give me some clues?
TIA

Paul
