- Windows XP Support >> XP default driver for camera - how to bypass?Hi all
I was stupid enough to hook up my new Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ20 camer
to my computer before I installed the software - now the compute
treats the camera as a movable storage medium (F-disk) using
default XP driver. XP will not let me install the original driver
"there is no need to install a driver, the current one works fine" o
something along those lines. Does anybody know how to bypass th
default driver and install the proper one? Thanks

- Windows XP >> boot up timeHi everyone,
Just an observation, but I dumped the XP themes in favor of the "classic"
view, and the time that it takes to boot up the system has decreased by
about half.

I press cancel and it repeats with a further message that
is identical apart from it ends DR4
this happens again with DR5 then DR6 then DR7.
It then dissapears and everything is as normal, thought

- Windows XP >> Sata drive won't work in external enclosureI have a Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 9 120GB SATA 150 hard drive that works fine
in the computer but when I place it in an external enclosure it can't be
read or mounted by either my Win XP PC or my Macbook Pro.
I have tried various external enclosures, with USB and with firewire
connectors but the drive will not show up in either computer when connected.
The same enclosures work fine with other SATA 150 drives but not with the
120GB drive.
Can anyone suggest what may be wrong? Do I need to set any jumpers on the
drive?
Why would a drive work fine when installed in the computer but not show up
when placed in an external enclosure?
Thanks a lot for any advice.

- Windows XP Setup >> Read errors on XP System CD during installWhen installing XP, I get errors reading various files on
the system CD during the "copying files" process.
If I restart setup, I get the same error on different file
names.
The copying process may get as far as 80% complete before
this happens, but can happen as early as 20% complete.
I've also tried installing Win2K and the same type of
errors during the "copying files" phase.
I'm currently running WinME without problems.
I've also tried copying the install folder from the system
CD prior to running setup, but still get read errors
trying to read the system CD. I have 2 CD drives, and
have the same problem with both drives.
I can read any other CDs without problems, but the Win2K
and WinXP system CDs won't read reliably. I've tried
several different original system CDs with the same
results. Do these system CDs use a different format than
conventional CDs?
Any Suggestions?

After having set the preferences in the schedule dialog, the program

After that, an error is displayed:

What's the cause of this problem?
Thanks in advance

- Windows XP Support >> Hard drive light is always onI recently purchased a new video card, an Asus V9520-X/TD 128MB, to run on
my P4 1.5GHz system with an Asus P4B motherboard and 512 MB of SDRAM.
The hard drive light is always on, not flickering off and on but always on.
I have asked Asus for help twice but the first time there was no response and
the second time they said they are having trouble with their email and did
not recieve the description of my problem.
I reinstalled my old video card and the hard drive light reacts as I would
expect but when I reinstalled the new card the light remains on.
Any suggestions to fix this problem or as to why it is happening?
Thank you.

- Windows XP Setup >> Windows Update LocksMy stepfather did a "recovery only" option on his Pavilion. When he clicked
on Windows Update, it asked to install the new software. He did that but
something happened that it froze his PC. He restarted his computer and tried
the WU again. However, after it launches, nothing comes up at all ... It
just "dead stops". His PC cannot even turn AU on automatically or even
manually. Tried installing BITS 2.0 (what the new WU uses) but same thing
happened. Just nothing happens after he launches WU. It starts loading the
page but completely stops with "done" written at the bottom of the page
progress bar. The express/custom links do not show up at all. Any
suggestions would be appreciated. I did follow the troubleshooting steps WU
asked such as checking the registry and all to see if AU has "started"
written in the tables. It does. It is frustrating. Any ideas??? All the
other microsoft sites work. Just not WU. I think there is a "jam" in some
file WU uses.

- Windows XP >> Backup -- missing target driveI did a MS backup using my L drive for the target and all went well. Since
then I have not been able to replicate that. The drive appears to be fine --
I can open it and inspect files or copy stuff to it. The only problem seems
to be that MS Backup wil no longer offer it as a target for backups. I did a
check point restart to an earlier date than the time I did the initial backup
thinking that something had gone wrong and a restore would fix it -- wrong
guess. By the way, I just checked and that drive has 119 GB free space. Any
ideas?

- Windows XP >> Causes for failure of return from hibernationI'm wondering what are the common causes for the failures of return from
hibernation in XP SP2. I have a one year old notebook that runs XP MCE
and I have it set up to hibernate when I close the lid. Despite hearing
of people having problems with hibernation in XP, I have rarely had
problems with the PC restoring itself from hibernation - till recently.
As of a month or so, it has become not uncommon for the notebook to try
to restore itself and after reading the file (progress meter goes to the
end) asks me to delete the saved file and restart Windows. I would not
complain except that this is a change for my system and I therefore
wonder why the hibernation file is now getting corrupted.
Could it be the C: partition is filling up? I have over 6 GB in my 18 GB
C:\ partition.
Could a recent Windows update have changed a OEM file that worked
before? Could there be a new conflict with some other new or updated
other program?
I regularly use Ad-Aware, Spybot, anti-viral software, Zone Alarm, and
defragmentation. Is there a way to know why the system is now having
more trouble with hibernation that it used to?
Thanks.

- Windows XP Support >> Lost CD But Still Have Key...need serious help hereAlrighty...my friend has a spare (non-illegally-gained) CD key for Microsoft
Windows XP Home Edition (no SP's). We were trying to install it using the
Gateway Win XP CD (once again, no SP's) on an older computer, but it wouldn't
boot from CD. So I downloaded the app from MS's website that allows you to
make boot floppies (yes, I picked the right version). The floppies worked
(after they were formatted), but when it came time to use the CD, an error
occoured. After several attempts, all yielding the same error, I decided to
ask my dad to bring home his Win XP CD. It was from Dell, and came with his
computer at his office. So I re-downloaded the floppies ('cause his CD was
for Win XP Home SP2), and tried his CD. The floppy part still worked fine,
but when it got to the CD, it asked for the CD key. I confidently typed in
the key from my friend. It didn't work. I was confused, so I tried my own
key. It didn't work either. Puzzled, I looked at the CD sleeve; there it was:
you needed to use ONLY the key that came with the CD. So I asked my dad to
bring home the key, and then I'd change it to my friend's key using a
third-party application. He disagreed with this, saying that Dell and
Microsoft wouldn't like this. Any thoughts on either a.) explaining to my dad
that what I am doing is perfectly legal or b.) getting a (preferably free)
Windows XP install CD, whether SP'd or not? Thanks!
