only way to reboot is to power down.
Any thoughts? Anybody?

- Windows XP >> XP installation stops after rebootI'm trying to install XP in the 2nd partition (D:) on a drive that has
Vista on the 1st partition (C:).
I put the CD in and it seems to go OK, I select the 2nd partition and
it copies all the files across.
When it reboots, though, nothing happens, no OS boots up, it just
stops after "Boot from CD/DVD....."
I've tried repairing the Vista startup and using VistaBootPRO to get
both Vista and XP in the Vista boot menu. In this case, Windows XP
doesn't boot, complaining about missing \ntldr.
I've tried using the XP recovery console, fixmbr, fixboot c:, fixboot
d:, still no go.
Where do I go from here?

- Windows XP >> Startup looking for user nameWhile starting up XP I reach a welcome screen that asks

- Windows XP Network >> XP Pro - Loosing Network NeighbourhoodI have a small home network.
My laptop at start up is able to map drives to the other
machines on the network and succesfully log onto the
Active Directory Domain and map my homedrive.
I have my home drive mapped to a 2000srvr.
A number of occasions now I have lost the connection to
the network drive. At which time when I attempt to use my
H: drive it comes up and says I do not have permission to
use the resource. (Home drive share)
At this point I am able to ping the server and all other
workstations.I am able to remote control the 2000srvr yet
unable to map drives to it.
The server does not appear in the browse window.
Any suggestions of what is possibly causing the problem
would be appreciated.

- Windows XP Network >> Home network (LAN) problemsHello!
I have two PC's at home, both running Windows XP SP2. PC1 has a built-in LAN
into to mobo, PC2 has a PCI lan card. Both have external 56K modems. When I
set up the network, I configured PC1 to connect to the internet, and PC2 to
use the PC1 internet connection. I had no problems initially with the setup.
However lately, I get a yellow triangle with the exclamation on either
machine telling me limited or no connectivity. Did it have something to do
with the PC2 connecting to the internet at one time when PC1 was turned off?
Everytime I try to "repair" the LAN setup, I end up with the same message.
Now even PC1's LAN setup cannot be repaired. Both can still share files and
printing, but PC2 cannot connect to the internet using PC1.
I tried reversing the configuration with PC2 connecting to the internet with
PC1 connecting through PC2. The setup worked! But I want the original config
because I have PC1 on at all times and PC2 turned off at times. Any
suggestions or help please?
Is there a way of erasing all the configurations in the PC's registries and
hard disk so that I could start from scratch? If so, how do I do it? I tried
uninstalling and disconnecting the LAN and LAN card, and then reinstalling,
but the setup would pick up the old configuration settings.
Is there a software utility that helps set-up home networking and diagnose
and help solve problems other than the troubleshooter that comes with XP?
Thanks to everybody!

- Windows XP Support >> Printer driver does not install, "operation could not be completed"Hi !
Trying to install an old NEC Silentwriter2 S60P to my new system XPSP2
(via parallel LPT1:) the printer installation assistant always fails.
It's not a problem of the driver itself (HP LJ IIP or NEC S90P will do),
I'm the admin, ALL Microsoft hints (German and US database) and several
other newsgroup tips have been tried,
other printers are (in the meantime) deleted as well as all the software
and registry entries. There is enough space on the drives, the
connection to the printer is okay, too (checked by setting it to PCL and
"copy test.txt lpt1:").
NEC has given up the support for this modell, except the support page
with hints (saying "install the S90P drivers coming with XP" or an
alternative e.g. HP, Adobe PS...).
Has anybody got a new idea ?
What about manual installation of the HP LJ IIP drivers?
Which files have to copied to
%WINDIR%\system32\spool\drivers,
%WINDIR%\system32\spool\printers and/or
%WINDIR%\system32\spool\prtprocs
?
Which entries have to be set in the registry in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environments\Windows
NT x86
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Printers und
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Monitors
?
Thanks a lot.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Formatting/PartitioningHi group,
I've been having problems with worms lately and they have really messed up my harddrive. I wish to format the drive (I only have the one) and then partition it. One partition for XP Pro and the other for my Data.
First question: How do I format the harddrive? I went into MS-Dos command through Explorer but it won't let me do it.
Second question: I also have access to a partitioning software. Is it of any use for me at this time?
Third question: If the partitioining software is not necessary, how do I partition my harddrive after I have formatted it?
I would appreciate any help that I could get.

- Windows XP Setup >> New WinXP installed itself on H: driveMy wife has just installed WinXP Home on a new PC which had one raw
120gb hard drive and found it has set the 3 partitions she created as
H: (WinXP) I: (Apps) J: (Data), instead of the normal C:,D:,E:. Her
only other drive is a CD-RW/DVD combo which appears as D:.
3 removable drives have appeared, labelled E:,F:,G:.... but in fact she
has no removeable drives, these would seem to be the USB ports on the
motherboard!!
Any idea what might have gone wrong and how it might be fixed?
Could she use Partition Magic or a similar utility, since the XP Disk
Manager will not allow her to change the system drive letter?
Or is the best solution to start again, reinstall Win XP?
Thanks for any guidance

- Windows XP >> 119 New Messages?I'm curious what this message means. When Windows first starts when I turn
the comp on in the morning, I sometimes get a message under my Log On name
that says something like: "50 New Messages". I only get the message once in
a while. This morning it said "119 New Messages". I check my Outlook
Express and I only had 5 new messages. I also have two hotmail accounts. Is
this message indicating that I have 119 new messages in one or both of my
hotmail accounts?
Just curious. Thanks for the help. Mike

computer in wich the mouse and keyboard are connected via

cd, this shows that the BIOS is recognizing the keyboard,
but when i get into the installation menu the keyboard

- Windows XP Support >> Windows login - changed user nameA little background. When the computer was set up we recorded user "Sally"
on the setup screen. Windows XP Professional, Dell 6000 Inspiron. Sally
left the company so we renamed the User to "KS". On the windows login screen
it continues to default to "Sally" and requests a password which we don't
have. If we change the user to "KS" we can log in to the computer and
continue business as usual. If we go to Control Panel-Users Sally is no
longer listed there or is she listed in Control PanelAdministrative
Tools|Computer Management|Local Users and Groups|Users. So I can't use the
control userpasswords 2 command to get rid of the password. I would like to
have the login in screen default to "KS" our current user and get rid of any
reference to "Sally". Does anyone have any ideas?

I have gone through all of the setup several times and
double checked all suggestions from windows and direcway

- Windows XP Support >> profile damaged & missing documentsI logged onto my pc and my profile was 'damaged', meaning that I had none of
my documents/desktop/favourites etc on my area and my stuff had been moved to
another folder in documents & settings. I moved my documents from the folder
in documents & stetings (where they used to be) into my new area and then
logged off, saved it etc.
On logging back on, my documents are completely gone. When using Search, all
I find are shortcuts in my old 'recent documents' folder and I cannot get any
of my things back. Using system restore does not seem to help, as, though my
desktop goes back to its old self, my documents remain missing.
This error corresponds with the URL below, which gives microsoft's hints,
which I didn't follow as I couldn't connect to the 'net when this occurred.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;326688
If anybody out there could give me some help or advice, I would be very
grateful indeed. I would be especially intesrested to know if my documents
have permanently gone or are languishing and could be restored (I think the
former is probably correct)
Thanks

- Windows XP Security >> Help!!!When my daughter was 12 she knew that if you disconnected
the battery in the hard drive you could by-pass the
passwords. Now that she is 18, I am in big trouble. She
knows way more than me and I can't seem to keep up
anymore. She has already rendered one computer unusable.
Windows XP Home Edition is on the computer and I can't
access anything. She has shut me out of everything so if
I want to stop her ability to use the computer I can't.
Is there any information available to help me out. I am
a single mum with no extra money and so can't afford to
get in touch with Microsoft directly or use any of their
services other than this one.
I would also like to know if there is a way without her
knowing to stop access to inappropriate sites. She
allows her friends to use the computer and I have no idea
what sites they get into not to mention all the junk she
puts on it herself.
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
