- Windows XP Support >> Hard Drive - Read Error after the first rebootI start a XP Pro install from the CD. XP finds the hard drive and allows me
to set the parition sizes.
I'm working on a 20Gb Maxtor HD. After the partitions are set, C: is
formated cleanly and the file loading begins. I reach the "Need to reboot"
step and watch the red progress bar maximize and the reboot process begins.
The CDROM Drive is sensed and I get a HD Read error and XP wants to re
install from the CD.
How could I get a clean install up to this point and then get a HD Read
error upon reboot.
Perhaps I need to FDisk the HD before I begin the install from the CD.
Unfortunately I may need to get a new diskette drive if this is necessary.
BTW, I did try fixMBR which worked but to no avail.

- Windows XP Security >> Windows Update breaks NetScreen Remote ClientA coworker and I have been keeping our W2K and XP Pro
systems up to date with all of the security patches.
Unfortunately, it appears that one or more of the MS
updates has broken our ability to connect to our office
via the NetScreen Remote Client. I have tried backing
out the update to figure out which one is the culprit,
but I have not found which one(s) has caused the
problem. Other co-workers who have not been keeping
their systems up to date can still connect. Has anyone
experienced this problem and found a solution?
Thanks,Carlton

- customize >> Retaining New ToolbarsI created a new taskbar toolbar in Windows XP using a folder I created. I
want to be able to display or hide the toolbar as it's needed.
Unfortunately, once I uncheck the toolbar to hide it, it disappears from the
toolbar list, and I have to go back to "New Toolbar..." to re-add it to the
toolbar list (and then resize and format it, etc.).
Is is possible to create a new toolbar, but have it remain in the list even
after it is unchecked?
Thanks!

- Windows XP Setup >> Cheap XP , OR, XP for multiple computers?Ok, dont take me as an amature, but theres a few points i
need to make before asking this.
Windows upgrade cost around 150 in canada, the just
regular home edition for installing into a blank hard
drive is around 300.
I am currently building my PC piece by piece, with the
best i can get. But, just realising that i can buy a
computer for 400$ at some places, makes me wonder, how are
these companies installing XP for 300$, and only affording
the rest of the box for 100$, there would be no profit.
anyways, im looking for a cheap XP for a single system, or
for multiple systems.
is there a license required to purchase for multiple
systems?
and harsh point/question,
if you expect people to pay 300$ for a single
installation, i think there should be no surprises at the
illegal copies...and no, not all illegal copies are shut
down within a month. please give me useful answers, ive
had nothing but bad luck with this stuff.
Thank you very much,
PS. many programs require xp, there should at least be
extremely stripped down xp versions.

- Windows XP Hardware >> Utility that can force XP to assign a drive letter to a partition?Hello,
Does anyone know of a utility that can force XP to assign a drive letter to
a partition. I've gone all around trying to figure out why it's not doing
it! I've reset the drive cabling to cable select, and reinstalled XP, but
still it's not assigning it a drive letter. It's an NTFS partition
otherwise I'd consider installing Windows 98. I've installed Partition
Magic 8.0 but I coudln't find anything there that would let me assign the
partition a drive letter.
Might anyone know of anything that can do this?
Thanks,
Jeff

- Windows XP Support >> Registry CorruptWhile trying to install a Norton Antivirus upgrade, I was given the following
message: "You do not have access to the registry key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT or
one of its subkeys. Please change the permissions then launch setup again."
When I tried following the instructions for changing the permissions I
realized that I did not have an Administrator group or a System group, which
were both required. I tried to add these, but before i did I made sure the
system had a good restore point and I made a backup copy of the registry.
After making the changes I was no longer able to access any Icons or Apps on
my screen. Even in Safe Mode I am unable to lauch the Registry to restore the
backup. When I try to run an App I get a strange message which states "This
file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action.
Create an association in the Folder Options control panel." So I have been
unable to run the system restore or restore the backup of the Registry.
Is there any way to get the registry restored?

- Windows XP >> Win XP Updates -- NON Security RelatedI am asking about Win XP updates that are _not_
security related.
With that many lines of code in XP, you can be certain
that there are bugs. That's just simple statistics.
Does MS also create patches for the more important
non-security-related bugs? If so, where are they?
I have looked on the MS website and cannot find
what I am looking for. A search of the website
turns up many links about updates. Typically
they will have subjects like:
"Get the latest _security_ updates _automatically_".
That is precisely what I am NOT looking for.
I do that already.
I want to review a list of available patches for
other issues. How do I do this?
Thanks.

Check the properties of the file. The same or even extended information is
usually shown on the "Summary" page.

- Windows XP Hardware >> trying to diagnose intermittent problemwinxp sp2

1 gig ddr ram

Greetings
I have had a problem with my computer since I got it nearly 2 years
ago. I think it is some sort of device driver problem but i haven't
been able to diagnose it. I just did a fresh reinstall of winxp and
that hasn't fixed it
problem is VERY slow boot process then occasional spontaneous reboots
during the boot. if i just keep rebooting then eventually is starts and
everything is fine. it usually doesn't crash and can go for a few weeks
without needing a restart
i have all the latest drivers from manufactureres website
i have a tv card but the drivers aren't loaded and i don't use it
one problem i had this morning - i put a dvd in and it went to a stop
screen with "driver_irql_not_less_or_equal" and lower down "cdfs.sys"
but when i restarted it actually started first go (though again, very
slow boot process), and here i am using it with no problems. It
occasionally freezes using moviemaker 2 but doesn't crash the machine -
just have to restart moviemaker
I can always boot to safe mode. I can do everything i need to on this
machine without it crashing - i use paint shop pro, office 2003,
opera, other apps and the list goes on
i'm keen to try and diagnose this problem - sometimes i think it must
be graphics card, other times maybe motherboard problem
if someone can help me with where to start i would appreciate it as I
want to shut down sometimes but dread the start up process
many thanks

- Windows XP Hardware >> XP won't start with second hard driveWindows XP Home Edition
eMachines 1.0G Celeron
30Gb original boot drive
Have just installed a second (additional storage) hard
drive (Maxtor 120GB). Jumpers are properly set for
master/slave. The auto-detect BIOS seems to work fine and
properly identifies the new drive in BIOS setup. The
format/partitioning utilities that came with the drive
(boot-up from the CD)work just fine and report that the
drive is working fine. Testing, format, partitioning all
complete fine.
But XP will not start with the new drive connected. After
BIOS I get a quick logo screen then blanks out and then a
full page text message including the following:
"Were sorry....., Windows XP did not start successfully. A
recent hardware change might have caused this." THen
gives the following restart options (none of which work):
Start in Safe Mode
Start in Safe MOde with Networking
Start in Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Last Know Good Configuration
Start Windows normally
None of these options will work, and it repeats the boot
and returns to this message screen over and over. I have
never had a situation where Windows would not even start
in Safe mode. If I disconnect the new drive, I get this
message screen once more, but then XP will start normally.
If the BIOS is satisfied with the new drive why will XP
not start? If the disk utilities test and format it OK,
why won't XP go along? How can I help XP accept the new
drive if I cannot even start-up to work with it?
Thanks for any help.

- Windows XP Hardware >> Cloning new HDI have one of those generic computers that can handle both ATA and SATA
drives. It can also handle DDR and DDR2 mem chips. A 'CLONE' so to speak.
Anyway, my boot drive now is an ATA 120 GB hd. I want to clone it to a SATA
500 GB hd. These are both Seagate drives.
Using the software that came with the SATA hd I attempted the cloning. All
seemed ok until I tried to boot to the new hd. Kept getting the message that
the operating system was missing.
It seems that all the data cloned to the new SATA hd and I went into the
BIOS to set the new hd as the boot drive and disconnected the original hd so
as not to cause any undo confusion. I think for some reason the ATA to SATA
exchange was somehow not complete or there is a compatibility issue somewhere.
Any ideas or suggestions would be great. I am trying to avoid starting from
scratch. My intent is to use the new cloned SATA hd in this computer and put
the old drive in an older computer for backup purposes etc. The older
computer cannot use the SATA drive.
Thanks in advanced for any help!
