- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Repair Installation problemsTo cut a moderately long story short I was having problems booting Windows XP
and was getting an error message saying that "load needed DLL's for kernel".
I searched for solutions to this and found that the recommended solution by
microsoft was a repair install which I am now trying to do. However after
booting from the CD and starting the repair install process booting windows
now takes several minutes which it didn't before and all that happens after
this period is the setup window appears, tells me that it will take 39
minutes to finish the installation but then quickly goes wrong saying that
"setup failed to install the product catalouges" and gives the error code of
3e7 which means nothing to me.
Is there anything that can be done to fix this?

- Windows XP Support >> Owner account changed to "Account Unknown"Help! My owner account (where most of my files are) has been magically
changed to "account unknown" under the System Properties/Advanced/User
Profiles. I "see" the "Account Unknown" listed, but I am unable to access
it. I tried signing in as the administrator, but no luck. I checked Windows
help online, but no luck. I called Sony Vaio support, (support?), no luck.
I am running XP Home Edition SP2 will all updates.
I have found out that the files aren't gone, according to online readings,
but getting to them is another matter. I'm a minister and all of my
sermons/funerals/baptisms/etc. are connected with the "Owner" profile. Yes,
I know, back up... I have the hard copies, but that's not real helpful.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

- Windows XP Setup >> SP2 and network problemsHi,
I am a network administrator trying to test SP2 before I
deploy it across my network. All my machines are
connected to an Active Directory Server that Runs Windows
2000. When I install SP2 on my test machine, I am able to
log into the network and then shortly after it appears
that I lose network connectivity. I cannot access network
resources and renew/repair my network adapter/IP address.
I have disabled the new WinXP firewall, but no luck. If I
remove SP2, then everything goes back to working
properly. Anyone else have a problem like this?
Thanks for any help.

- Windows XP >> Still having problems deleting this file...This file seems to be stuck on my computer! Whenever I
try to delete it, it says that the file is being used by
another program or user. So, it won't let me delete it! I
tried closing all programs then deleting. No luck. I
already tried going into Safe Mode to delete it, but that
didn't work either! Is there anything else I can do?
Is there such a thing as a file that is undeletable?!
This is a sucky situation. I appreciate your help!!

- Windows XP >> File sorting issueFile sorting issue
Here is a collection of emails/postings - all wanting the same thing
(Folders first then files most recent first) Does anyone know of a
solution?
Thanks,
Shawna
Begin Paste
-------------
I recently changed to XP.
For the order of files in a directory I usually use Details or List
then often sort the file/folder listing into date order with most
recent on top. In 98 this arrangement listed the folders at the
beginning. Thus when I open a folder I immediately see the list of
subfolders (in case I want to go deeper or transfer a recent file to a
folder) followed by recent files in case I want to use one again or
move it to a subfolder. I usually find this arrangement by far the
most convenient.
But, XP puts the folder list on the bottom instead of leaving them at
the top. This is *very* inconvenient.
Is there a way to make XP sort/order file/folder lists like 98 does
it?
jim
-----------
Hi, I have been using Windows XP since it came out. I still miss
Win98 in the following respect:
In many directories, I like to use the "details" view that windows
explorer provides, and set it to show me the most recently modified
files.
Back in Win98, this view combination shows folders first - and then
files. (Most recent folder to least recent folder, then most recent
file to least recent file.)
This way, at a glance, you could see all recently changed files and
all folders without resorting or scrolling down to the end of what may
be a very long list of files.
I loved it that way, it made sense, it was convienient.
In Windows XP, this behavior was changed. Someone decided to make it
harder.
Either you can list:
Files shown first ( most recent file to least recent file), and then
folders (most recent folder to least recent folder).
or
Files first (least recent to most recent), and then folders (least
recent to most recent).
So, my "simple" question is: how can I make Windows XP show folders
first, and then files like Win98?
thanks!
---------------
Ultimately I wish to Arrange the Icons inside my Folders thus:
All concurrently in "details":
1st by: Sub folders (Alphabetically a-z)
2nd by: Links (Alphabetically a-z)
3rd by: Zipped folders (Alphabetically a-z)
4th by: regular files (by Date with newest files at the top)
Then, set that regime to apply to all folders
If that can't be done I would settle for say:
All concurrently in "details":
1st by: Sub folders (Alphabetically a-z)
2nd by: all files (by Date with newest files at the top)
Then, set that regime to apply to all folders
Is any of this possible? I believe this would greatly assist me in
locating my files.
Thanks,

- Windows XP Network >> My attempt at a network in detailThis is a followup to my last post. The original message
is below it.
As I said in my previous message, I am using a D-link
DI624 wireless router. The router is connected to my DSL -
and DSL into the router. My computer is in the first port
of the router. The other computer was using dial-up an an
internet connection but is at times receiving the DSL
connection. I have tried numerous settings for the Wizard,
but nothing is working. I have not set up an internet
gateway on either of the computers, it says the router is
working as the gateway just fine.
I hope this info is more helpful to you, since I am
completely baffled.
Thanks again.

shared it through the extra NIC card I had which fed into

Windows XP Setup >> System Restore Passsword Question
When I set up a Scheduled Task to set a restore point at startup, I get the
message "The scheduled task did not run because no user account password was
entered."
This comp has only one user who does not want any passwords - for anything.
Is there any way to bypass this requirement in System Restore? Simply
clicking 'Enter" when prompted for a password does not work.
THx in advance

Windows XP Setup >> System Restore Passsword Question
Well Carey - I have tried all the below listed and here is where I am:
(For reference, I am just trying to set up a RP at startup (system or
user) )
1) CP Scheduled Tasks shows restore point has been created, but Last
Result is always 0x1, which I understand means it did not work.
2) Restore Point does not show up as a choice in the System Restore frame.
3) In the View Log routine I am getting "Result: The task completed with an
exit code of (1)"
Any thoughts on what is going on here. BTW, this comp is the host on a LAN.
Would that have anything to do with the issue?
Thanks
Dave

Windows XP Setup >> System Restore Passsword Question
Windows XP automatically creates a Restore Point almost
on a daily basis. Why are you attempting to duplicate what
Windows XP does automatically?
System Restore creates a restore point every 24 hours if the
computer is turned on, or if it has been 24 hours since the last
restore point was created. Scheduled restore-point creation
occurs when the computer is idle, when there is no mouse,
keyboard, or disk activity.

Windows XP Setup >> System Restore Passsword Question
Carey - Windows isn't doing it automatically. There are many days when no
RPs - none at all - are automatically generated (presuming we are talking
about the undefined "System Checkpoint") There are some, but they certainly
are not 24 hours apart. These comps are turned off at night (8:00pm -
Midnight), and booted about 5:00 am. Before some ham hand does it to me
when I'm not around, I would like to have a RP at bootup. Every time. And
I would like to be the one that decides when a Scheduled Task occurs on my
machines, not Microsoft.
There is one mystery I have to admit. CP/Scheduled Tasks/ System
Restore/Properties/Settings there is an option "Stop the task if it runs for
more than 72 hours" I can't image how many tasks run for more then 3 days,
but maybe that should be unchecked. BTW, would the screen saver cause this
problem?
snip>Scheduled restore-point creation occurs when the computer is idle, when
there is no mouse, keyboard, or disk activity.
I didn't know that. But - there is clearly an "At system startup" option in
Schedule. Are you saying I can't do a SR at startup? So far, I have to
admit I have been unable to. Let's just say for my own reasons I would like
to. I would appreciate any help you can give me in doing so.
Thanks
Dave

- Windows XP >> "win.ini", [Internal] Section: What kind of entries?OS is WinXP Pro SP2
Last 4 lines of "C:\WINDOWS\win.ini" reads:
[Internal]
Install=1145744660
Install2=1145744660
Device2=us/Hx73Jysi7xsi5y8a9zr2+xss=
I've searched for both "1145744660" and "Hx73Jysi7xsi5y8a9zr2" in
both Registry (using regedit) and on C-drive (i.e. using ex. "DIR
C:\*1145744660* /a /b /s").
- These searches found nothing.
Could these "Internal" values be meaningful references into internal
Windows components or programs, or 3.rd party programs, or external
not-connected devices (ex. USB HD) ?
Is the "Internal" section of win.ini really an official Microsoft
standard or convention?
FYI: I recently cleaned out a suite of Virus, SpyWare, HiJack, - but it
doesn't seem reasonable to assume that any (of those I cleaned out)
was targeting a device.
And Yes - I'm pretty sure that no weird unexpected processes are
currently running.

- Windows XP Security >> Windows explorerCan anyone tell me why windows explorer wants to access
the internet? I have windows xp home edition. I bought
this computer a year ago and windows xp home was pre-
installed along with a whole package of junk from HP.
I have since uninstalled the junk I don't use. I have
installed Sygate personal firewall, and I use Norton
Antivirus 2004.
Windows explorer (not internet explorer) is trying to
access the internet every now and then, and I can't
understand why it would need access. I have pest patrol,
adware, and spybot search and destroy and I run them at
least once a week, so I have ruled out the possibility
that any spyware or adware could be trying to phone home.
Is there a legitimate reason for windows explorer to
access the internet?
