- Windows XP Security >> need access to user (not administrator) settings with runasWe have a Windows 2003 domain with Windows XP workstations.
We have a group policy in place that restricts users from accessing
the Internet Properties page.
We are now adding some new settings to the GPO that will change
various settings in Internet Properties.
I would like to be able to check to see that the changes have gone
through, and to see what settings are in place in the users computers.
My problem is that when I use right-click and shift Internet Options
in the control panel and choose Run As, and enter the user name and
password of an administrator, I get the Internet Properties of the
administrator. This is obviously not helpful as I'm looking for the
user's settings.
I have tried using the runas command from the command line, but
neither the /env or /noprofile switches prevent me from still getting
the administrator's settings.
Even if i run regedit (which is also blocked for users) using the
administrators credentials I get the registry entries under Current
User for the administrator.
As we are just beginning to implement Group Policy restrictions, I can
see this being a problem with many settings that are user specific.
Does anyone know a way to allow access to restricted applications and
control panel applets, while still showing the settings of the logged
in user?

- Windows XP Setup >> Sysprep Mini-setup mangles Boot.iniI use Altiris Deployment server to deploy images. I was forced inot using
Sysprep by XP SP2. After syspreping and pulling the image I can check the
boot.ini file and it is correct, but after deploying the image it runs
through the mini-setup and cannot find the Windows forlder onthe last reboot.
When I looked at the Boot.ini file it is missing part or all of the text. I
have overcome this wiht server deployed images by copying the Boot.ini file
in as part of the final configuration, but when pulling the image I have to
boot to another OS (WinPE) and copy a new Boot.ini in. Has anyone else had
this problem? Does anyone have any idea where I might be making a mistake?

- Windows XP >> Backup not backing upOkay, maybe I'm missing something here. I have an HP
C1553A 24X6 DAT tape library, installed in a stand-alone
server running XP SP1 and all the upgrades, and trying to
back up local and network files. The Backup runs, but
the only thing that it recorded to tape are the folders
themselves, and not the files within, which does me no
good. ANy ideas? I've checked every possible setting,
and nothing looks like it is out of line.
Please email to phil@lacefield.com as I'm rarely on these
forums.
Thanks in advance for any help!

- Windows XP >> Loading XPRecently, to load XPPro, it takes a lot longer. windows
start normally until I get the screen wallpaper
(microsoft picture of a field) but no icon and no task
bar. It stays like this for a few minutes and finally it
continues with loading. Then, loading NAV takes forever
and after all this, I can start using my laptop.
Any idea what happened? Could it be related to norton
antivirus or internet security? or what?

- Windows XP Network >> VPN server unable to disconnectI have a home VPN--Desktop (DT) as server and Laptop (LT) as client. The DT
is hard wired through a router, the LT is wireless through the router, and
the connection works very well in both directions. The problem starts when
the LT disconnects from the VPN, the DT then is unable to make a standard
internet connection. The Cntl Panel>Network Connection shows connected
however, I get the "cannot connect etc" when trying. I work around this by
rebooting and then everything works fine. Suggestions as to how to fix this
problem.

- Windows XP Support >> Export e-mail from Outlook?...I have been using Outlook for quite a while now and have always exported to
a CVS or Excel file when backing up. It's not bad, but viewing e-mail on a
spreadsheet and losing all the attached files is not the best solution.
Are there any good solutions out there? I have a "Save Mail" folder I'd like
to back up every so often and be able to search and read through it. Even if
it exports all the e-mails into one long document, or PDF, that would be
great. Ideally I would like to save the attachments too but that is less
critical.
I believe Outlook stores in mbox format? So maybe a tool that works with
that. Or with Outlook's archive format. Anyway...just looking for a good way
to export all my emails to a normal readable file..thanks!

Windows XP >> One specific CD won't autorun
I was trying to install "Escape from Monkey Island" when it froze
after I switched CDs as the install wizard instructed. I had to reboot
by laptop to close the install window. But now the Monkey Island CDs
won't autorun. Any other CD I place in the drive autoruns just fine.
I cannot complete the install of Monkey Island. I have tried running
the setup.exe directly, but the install fails because I have to swap
the disks to complete it.
What I want to do is figure out what is blocking the autorun and get
rid of that.
Anyone have any ideas?

as a last resort maybe
this can help
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/ru=

however, keep in mind that before
the issue of virus and spyware became
an epidemic and required countermeasures,
many older software's (not all) were
preprogrammed with basic infections...
as long as your protections are in place
and your recovery/restore plan is in order,
then it wouldn't hurt to try with the link
above. if it doesn't work then it might
be written in incompatible/instinct

sometimes you can copy the disk
into a temp directory and launch it
from the hd. if it is a program that
runs from the disk, then you may need
to set up a virtual drive on the hd.
here are a couple
links that may be of interest to you

- Windows XP >> MSIE Causes Memory read error on closeI posted this last week and now can not find the
original. Someone mentioned running memtest, which I did
and there are no problems with my hardware.
Every time I shut down MSIE, I get an error that a

noticing some real performance issues now and I believe
it is something to do with the same memory read problem.
Any other suggestions?

The problem is that when you upgraded the connection
setup
was lost. Delete the old connection from the desktop. Open
the connections folder and delete that connection, if
there
is one. Then create a new one with the settings your ISP
gave you. If you used their software to do this first,
you'll need it again, as it installs custom software.

I did try to make a new connection, but the Internet
Connection wizard did not allow me to click the
button "Connect using a dial up modem". And when I try to
add a connection in the connection box of internet option

- Windows XP >> Systray icons missing. WMI error report. Relation to past post.I reported on trouble using intel network card driver and WMI.
http://groups.google.com/group/intel.network.adapters/browse_frm/thread/b520d7f96c02de65/0bdb1be4f99a578c?tvc=1&q=WMI#0bdb1be4f99a578c
Another syndrome is that icons in systray don't get displayed beyond a
firts couple, or after loading the icon for network card activity.
This is widely reported type of problem - missing systray icons,
reported here:
http://winhlp.com/node/16
I solved the problem thereof by hiding UPNP icons via My Network
Places.
Now if you review the numerous error logs in the past post you can see
the relation of this error with icons and the error of getting stuck
WMI during authorization. After failure to authenticate no further
icons are loaded.

I have also a Event ID 534 in the Security Log. "The user has not been

This think happen after a worm attack to the XP machine.

Enable the quest account
Running again the Network Setup Wizard

If anyone has some suggestions for this I'll be greatly appreciated!

nearly 80 hrs of vid to review and burn. I've tried 3rd
party apps with poor results. Ive seen what it can do
when it works and im almost impressed. I guess Quality
control doesn't mean much to BS

- Windows XP Setup >> XP StartupHow do I do three things with XP Home SP1:
Start a program (ie autoexec.bat) to echo a time/date
stamp to a file so I know when windows is crashing in the
middle of the night.
Find a file similar to faultlog.txt to tell me what made
windows crash and
find a file similar to scandisk.log to tell me what
checkdsk fixed during a boot process...
thank you
also i get irql_not_less_or_equal and
page_fault_in_nonpaged_area errors, I cant seem to
benchmark or test my memory because there are some
registry files (IoPageLockLimit) missing... what reg keys
need to be there for proper memory useage???????

- Windows XP Security >> Administrator access, after applying fix MS07-017 & MS07-08My PC was working ok, until I installed the security update 925902 (MS07-017)
AND 928843 (MS07-008). I then received the error message
"The system DLL user32.dll was relocated in memory. The application
will not run properly. The relocation occured because the DLL
C:\WINDOWS\system32\HHCTRL.OCX occupied an adress range reserved for Windows
system DLLs. The vendor supplying the DLL should be contacted for a new DLL".
I've downloaded the fix provided via 935448 and the error message has gone.
Unfortunately, I now have the situtation where, from turning on the PC to
getting the home page and icons etc, takes about 4 minutes. I'm unable to log
onto the internet, but if call up the Task Manager and shut down via Log off
Administrator, the PC immediately restarts and the internet works
immediately. Does anyone know what may have happened, or what I need to do to
correct this?

- Windows XP Update >> xp sp2since i loaded sp2 i keep getting error reporting
messages at the bottom of my screen. it's tied to file
dw15.exe. if i use task manager to end process, it'll go
away for awhile. this really slows my computer down. i
turned off error reporting in the system, but it didn't
change anything. is this Microsoft's way of working out
the sp2's errors?
