- Windows XP Hardware >> CD and CD-RW suddenly can't read discs. Both my optical drives have stopped reading CDs. In My Computer the CD-RW
drive is blank and the CD drive gives a message saying,"Windows cannot read
from this disc ..." Both drives recognize a CD (music, data) if it is in the
drive when the computer boots. However, if you open and close the drive it
can no longer see the disc. With a music CD I can get it to play using
Windows Media Player even though My Computer shows nothing there. Device
Manager shows everything is fine. I have tried disabling AVG Antivirus. These
drives have worked for over 2 years until now.

- Windows XP Network >> Mixed OS network printing problemsHi all
I've set up a small network at home with 2 XP laptops and one Win98SE tower.
I have a printer plugged into the 98 machine (because I want to keep the
others portable and also it has a parallel port) but I can't print to it
from the XP machines. I can see the printer in the 'network places' but get
a 'cannot communicate with the printer' error when trying to print. I've
got XP drivers for the printer on the XP machines and Win98 drivers on the
98 machine. My network runs through a combined adls/router/gateway box. I
assume that the mixed OS thing is causing me the problem. This is the only
problem with the network, everything else, eg file sharing, works fine.
Anyone have any ideas how I can sort this out without buying a copy of XP
for the tower?
Thanks

- Windows XP Network >> Connecting two wireless networks?I'm pretty new to networking, and want to keep my question
simple. I have Verizon wireless, with XP-home computer and
Router upstairs, and XP-home computer and laser printer
downstairs. Wireless internet connections work fine.
Trying to connect printer to downstairs computer wirelessly.
Have connected printer and downstairs computer using Netgear
WGE111 Wireless Game Adapter ($29.99 at Frys), and printer
works fine. Now, the question. Is there any way to have
both my Verizon wireless network and the Netgear wireless
network (computer to printer only) to work together (e.g.,
connect one to the other)?
Thanks,

- Windows XP Network >> Failed Installation Win32 MessageI am running Windows XP SP2. I've downloaded Java & the JRE Runtime
Environment - but when I go to install, I am blocked with a box that tells me
"this is not a valid Win 32 application. Contact the vendor or ... " Online
Games won't work without Java applets so I don't know what to try next. I've
gone to Internet Tools, Advanced, and under my HTTP 1.1 heading, there is no
Java mentioned, no MSJVM, no JIT compiler to "uncheck." If you know what to
do, please tell me. How do I get rid of this WIN 32 message that blocks all

- Windows XP Support >> Hard drive power managementHi, I have a question about power management settings for desktops. I
understand all of the options except "shut off HDs". How can a HD truly be
off if there is any background processes going on? That is, if my computer
is doing periodic backups, communications with a company firewall, etc... how
does it ever shut down? When I test it out, and attempt to send things to
that computer across a network, it seems as if it's still on. It certainly
sounds on from just listening to the machine, and it doesn't appear to be
spinning down and then back up again like from standby. The problem is that
I need to maintain a 24/7 connection to the internet to receive packages and
patches, so I can't use standby.
Could anyone give me some more information on the "shut off HD" option in
the Power Management settings, and how to test if the HDs are truly shutting
down?

You can use Norton Ghost to 'ghost' or clone the old hd to
the new hd.

You can give it a try, but I doubt that it will work on an HP.
Be sure to back up all of your personal data before you
do anything.

AS long as the HP restore disk is seen by an HP BIOS, the
new disk (C: and any HP hidden partitions) will be restored.
If you use FDISK or another tool to partition the disk
before you run the HP restore CD you can create multiple
partitions and the restore disk will still only copy to C:.
At least that is how it works on our HP6465 when I added a
new hard drive as master.

- Windows XP Support >> sleep awake does not show icons, only backgroundThis is WinXP pro, with all updates applied. When the system display has
gone to sleep and a key is pressed, the background appears but no icons. The
only keys that work are ctl/alt/del. It then shows the icons and the task
manager window. After canceling the task manager window the system seems to
work properly. The system is protected by PCCilian and router firewall.
When I tried to do a repair install using the XP CD, it said the system was
a later version than the CD and did not want to run.
I hope someone has some idea how to eliminate the problem.

- Windows XP Network >> My website through "My Network Places", not working correctlyI have a domain and hosted site through godaddy. I have a link to my website
under my network places. The link is to my root directory. Used to, if I
browsed to a folder and clicked on a jpg file, IE would open up and display
the jpg. In the address of IE would be the full path to the file. I could
copy this and paste it into forums. Now, when i click a jpg on my website
through my network places, I get windows fax and pic viewer and it says can't
display preview. I can't remember changing anything.
When I click on a jpg in a regular windows folder, the file opens up with
windows fax in pic viewer and shows the picture. If I go to file properties
and tell jpg's to open with Adope Photoshop, if I click on something on my
computer, photoshop opens and the file shows. But, If I browse to my website
through my network places, and click a jpg, photoshop will open but no file
will display?
What could have changed??
Thanks

this problem gets posted - and it gets posted plenty everywhere.
Time to fess up! Stand up, take responsibility, and fix the problem. (or
maybe I'll buy a Mac next time)

- Windows XP Support >> Network XP file server set-up difficultiesI'm trying to complete the replacement of an old Linux server for my church
with a new XP file server because we need more storage space and the vendor
for our data management software does not support Linux. Every time they
send a software upgrade, we have problems that they have trouble helping us
resolve because of the way Linux and windows products differ in management
of permissions. Part of the transfer is done and working well, other parts
I'm having trouble getting to allow mapping to two resources simultaneously.
1. Each user needs to be mapped to the data folder for the data management
software [done and running smoothly]
2. Each user needs access to a shared folder for a few documents that we
all need to see and/or modify (password protection desirable, but not
absolutely necessary) [conflicts with step 3 below]
3. Each user also needs access to a folder on the server that only they
have access to (with password protection) [conflicts with step 2 above]
I had steps 1 and 2 done, but when I tried to accomplish step 3, I ran into
conflicts and got messages like: "The network folder is currently mapped
using a different user name and password. To connect using a different user
name and password, first disconnect any existing mappings to this network
share." and/or "Multiple connections to a server or shared resource by the
same user, using more than one user name, are not allowed. Disconnect all
previous connections to the server or shared resource and try again."
When I disconnected and tried again, I lost step 2 on the workstation that I
was using. That's what got me here to ask the wisdom of those who know what
they're doing.
Here's what the file structure I'm trying to work with on the server looks
like (actual file names are different, but this is where they are):
C:\membership data folder
C:\shared documents
C:\users\user1
C:\users\user2
C:\users\user3
C:\users\user4
C:\users\user5
C:\users\user6
I have administrator rights on the server, so I can make any changes in
permissions there. Any help much appreciated.
Thanks.

- Windows XP Setup >> System ShutdownBuilt a system for a friend recently. Installed XP Home
and service packs 1 and 2.
Installs all went perfectly with no problems. However
since install the system shuts down after a couple of
minutes for no apparent reason. It totally locks up,
doesn't allow reset or anything and has to have the power
supply shut off at the wall. Once plugged back in it
restarts with out problems and then runs without any
problem till the next time it is switched on.
The system configuration is as follows:
Asrock K7S8XE Mainboard
AMD Athlon XP+ 3200 (200 FSB)
512MB PC3200 DDR 400
120Mb 8Mb Cache 7200 HDD
Nvidia AGP graphics card
Creative Audigy
Realtek 10/100 network card
All the drivers have been updated to the most recent
versions. I am at a loss as to where to go from here with
this problem and would appreciate any suggestions.
Many Thanks
