- Windows XP Hardware >> Sound cardsHi
My speakers are not working although they are connected. On investigation
the help and support is saying the sound card is not connected/installed?
This has been working okay up until a day ago. We have been running virus
scan's due to the computer being slow, also removing unwanted programmes and
I am now wondering if we have deactivated the sound card by mistake. How do I
reinstall the sound card. Help required please.
Thanks

Won't remember Explorer window size [Win XP General]
-----------------------------------------------------------------
[Win XP Pro, V. 2002, SP II; FAT 32; Celeron-2.56 GHz; 256 MB RAM]
Have looked thru most of the relevant posts by now for simple solution to
this
issue but so far did not find anything 100% conclusive. So forgive my
skepticism
and repetitiveness. Perhaps the various MVP's devoting their time to this
issue
have by now come to a collective conclusion as to a simple one-fits-all
solution.
If you are fairly certain that one of your previous solutions is AOK (when
correctly applied, of course), please just refer me to that post. No need to
waste your time on another detailed answer. I know you have better things to
do.
Here goes:
-----------------------------------
Of late, after boot and when clicking Explorer icon on DeskTop anytime
thereafter,
Win Explorer directory windows keep coming up in 'midsize' configuration
(like I
want them to, because need 2 windows side by side on DeskTop) - except that
the
actual size nowadays is almost exactly as large as in 'maximized' view (full
screen).
I would like Explorer to remember to come up w/ half-size windows.
Don't recall messing w/ the 'Folder Options' (if that's anything to do with
it).
Did use 'Disk Cleanup' recently - which is why maybe now in I/E, when I
click on
the down arrow to right of Address bar, no history comes up in Address
window -
even after I first visited some sites. However, it does come up when I start
typing in it. Didn't change any 'Internet options' either.
Is there a way (like in some ".ini" file, in old days) to program Explorer
to come up
w/ exact size window I want everytime I click on it; or some switch I can
use(similar to the 'properties' command: "Explorer.exe /e", which causes it
to open at "C:\" )?
----------------------------------------
In an aside...
There are other, minor lingering as well as new oddities cropping up with
both
Windows and Word. Not sure whether this has anything to do w/ the issue at
hand.
The new ones started to appear after power supply replacement - though basic
output voltages measure within specified tolerances.
It's difficult to remember all of the annoyances now, as they are not v.
serious -
yet. For example, this morning there was an auto-reboot and subsequent
Scandisk as I ejected a CD while opening a file elsewhere (this particular CD
tray likes to
pop out on its own a few times in a row on occasion, until it finally gets
the
message to stay put. This sometimes happens when I put in a CD).
Yesterday eve, with no one on our small home net, except me, I temp lost a
web
page I was reading on line (temporarily got "This page cannot be displayed")
which
automatically returned after about 15 seconds. Never, ever, in all my years
and
non-stop daily errors, hangups, net problems, etc., on a variety of systems
and
Win OS versions - did I ever see that one before. Of course, this is my 1st
time on a home network.
Response, too, is often frustratingly slow, as if it was rummaging its
memory for
options, before deciding to respond to a click of the mouse. There were
other,
more irritating little incidents than those noted, in the past. I've got the
processor temperature trigger point set at 50 degrees C.
Thanx in advance,
Ted...

- Windows XP Security >> Access Problem related 'Security?'Hi:
There are three computers in my household.
One of my family members needs to put his 'time-card' from the home.
Because his office does not allow him to do this from his field office where
he's working.
The site he needs is 'high-security' web-site to 'log-in' by using a
specific
code. However, he is NOT able to access this site even many attempts,
"except'
one computer. The other, two computers failed to open up the site.
In my recollection, before DSL failed installation, this, 'log-in' problem
NEVER
occurred. Only afterwards, the problem started.
Also, this scenerio/problem occurrring on eBay site, particularly 'Pay-Pal'
to make
financial transaction.
Wonder whether this is something related to 'Securty' or 'DSL' changed some
of configuration
although I 'removed' all of DSL installation by using Add/Remove.
Any idea on this problem would be truly appreciated.

- Windows XP Update >> sp2 svchost and wuauclt.exe 100%cpuHi,
I have a strange problem, I recently upgraded to sp2 on a xp pro machine.
Since then my cpu usage keeps oscillating between 100% and 0. Exactly like a
clock pulse. I used process explorer(www.sysinternals.com) and found svchost
to be the culprit. Also there wuauclt.exe is shown as a child process to that
particular instance of svchost. On suspending wuauclt.exe, everything goes
back to normal. Any ideas??? Unfortunately, I cannot disable automatic
updates because of a program called cisco clean access agent which my
provider uses to check if all computers are up to date.
Any inputs would be great..

- Windows XP >> Printer installs in safe modeHi
My HP3250 printer stopped printing suddenly. the job was left in the print
job. I deleted the printer and now when I plug in the usb cable XP starts to
auto install the HP3340 not 3250, I only have the 3250 connected and never
had another printer in the 3*** range ,printer and stops to say the printer
not installed properly . I have used the proper disk . If I try installing
it from the cd nothing happens. Another strange thing I noticed is that when
i startup in SAFE Mode a message appears saying the printer cannot be
installed. I also noticed the .EXE icons on the CD look like the old dos
icons and don't have the 'engine' icon.
I have the latest anti virus installed - no viruses
Pls help
Thanks

copy to disk and Wizard starts and names file with current date which I

What DVD burner hardware do you have and what burning software are you

Windows XP Hardware >> Burning a cd
A stand alone DVD player cant read files that are just dragged and dropped to a disk. You must use
some burning software to create the disc.

Also,
It s wrth checking that your DVD player can read photo created discs.
Use NERO to do it and it would be more than likely that there will be
no problem. Make Data Disc in Nero would be crrect i think.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> SERVICES.EXE - Extremely large HD I/O on every boot - system crawlI cannot figure this one out... I hope somebody here has a clue about this.
I have a workstation where on every boot, it will have a very large amount
of hard drive IO for about 15 minutes. My first thoughts were Virus Scan or
Windows Defender. I did some digging using SysInternal's Process Explorer
and FileMon.
What I found surprised me... The culprit was SERVICES.EXE. According to
Process Explorer, the only two service threads hosted under that process are
EventLog and PlugPlay. However, from what I understand, SERVICES.EXE is also
the host of the SCM, so all other services are spawned from it... Although
they are in their own unique processes, so I am assuming I wouldn't see hard
drive I/O in services.exe related to deeper service.
FileMon revealed that SERVICES.EXE is "touching" every single file on my
hard drive. It does the following to each file: Open, Query Information,
Query Security, Set Security, Close.
Fifteen minutes later, it's done.
What is going on here?
Some additional information...
- SERVICES.EXE - I/O Reads: 600, I/O Writes: 13,565, I/O Other: 897,745
- Entire hard drive is cleared of all NTFS auditing entries (SACL)
- Audit object access is disabled in security policy settings
- Nothing shows up in the System or Application event logs, except normal
messages, such as "event log service started" and then each various service
starting and a few .NET 2.0 Runtime errors (shim database error - known issue
from MS and unrelated).
- Virus scanner is McAfee and windows defender beta is running, but neither
process shows disk usage and both have automatic scheduled system scans
disabled.

- Windows XP >> Needed Pop Up window won't pop up!Greetings.
(I've posted this in the Internet Explorer 6 group as well...didn't know
which would be more appropriate.)
Our business group uses an internet based system for reporting all of our
programs. I have two laptops and one desktop. Everything works great on my
laptops, but I'm having a problem with the Desktop.
The system our group designed uses a 'calendar icon' that you have to click
on to pick a date (from the calendar that pops up) that your program took
place. Once you click on the appropriate date, the date is populated into
the report. However, on my desktop, when I click on the icon, nothing
happens! It makes the 'clicking' sound you expect when you want something to
open, but it does not. On the bottom title bar it says "javascript" when I
hover over the icon. The date cannot be entered manually...you HAVE to click
on a date for it to be accpeted...but if the calendar won't pop up...I'm
stuck.
I'm using Windows XP with all updates current.
My desktop is a Dell.
I figure it has to be something silly that's set in my internet options, but
for the life of me I can't figure it out.
I hope this makes sense.
Thanks for any input.

- Windows XP >> blank screen and blinkingHi,
This is the first time I am using a forum to try to fix my XP problem.
I was running a DVD when the picture froze. I close the DVD, restarted
the DVD by popping it in and out. The movie was good for 10 minutes
and it froze again.
This time I could shut it down. I finally did a hard shut down.
After that, I removed my DVD and try restarting. I gave me a blank
screen with a blinking cursor. My keyboard, mouse can't control
anything.
I tried to use my recovery disc and the PC is not reading it. What's
happening. How can I fix this?

- Windows XP Network >> Sharing Problem in XP media CenterHi, I facing the sharing problem for the last weak. In
my home there are three PCs connected to each other via HUB. In my
server there are two partitions namely C & D. Recently I installed
winXP media center on my C drive. I have two lan cards, one for local
lan & other for static IP given by my ISP. I am using 192.168.0.1, 0.2
& 0.3 (private IP)in all the three pcs. All the PCs are able to ping
each other, even as yahoo IP, but whenever I tried to open any website
in address bar I get the messege that "page cann't be dispalyed" in
remaining two pcs except my server. When I typed the yahoo IP in
address bar It opened on my client machine.
So being disappointed I installed windows server 2003 on my D
partition, When I boot my PC in 2003 server Internet started working in
all the pcs, but not in media center.
Please solve my problem.

Date: Tuesday, June 27, 2006 1:26 PM
I have over 140 icons in my Quick Launch tray and, once in a while, when I

order I want them (or, better yet, is there a simple way to put them back

I uninstalled Diskeeper - then rebooted. This time, the icons are all
jumbled up and I don't want Diskeeper entries put back in my Registry.
