- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> CDR refuses to recordSince upgrading my cdr to a Sony model, I can no longer
write cd-roms. I get the message that the drive is not
accessible. Have checked all connections, and bios. The
strange thing is, that when I put the old cdr back, this
also gives the same message. I am using easy cd creator
6, but have also tried Nero 5 with no luck.
The software that came with the drive (B gold)will write
to it, but not properly, causing errors every time.
Any advice would be welcome

Consequently my "Review your update history" is scrambled with "Failed"
"Cancelled" and "Succeeded" entries, how does this History get revised to
reflect the true state of the system.
I believe all updates were finally successful in being installed. A new
search for updates reveal none, but how can I be sure?

- Windows XP >> RDP for multiple usersI have machines that multiple users log into. They all use RDP to log into a
terminal machine for work. We want them to log into the TS with a "location"
username, ie., giroom. This means that all the users will have the same
login name and password for the TS. We also want to save the password so
they log into the TS automatically because the TS login is a minimal rights
user and they still have to log into our application.
we tried creating a connection file under the "All Users" folder with the
password saved, but when we tried to log in under each user's local profile,
the password was not saved.
Is there an easy way to keep the saved password in that connection file for
each user? So far we have resorted to creating multiple RDP sessions, but as
we roll out new boxes this would be a nightmare to duplicate.

- Windows XP Setup >> System Restore Hung AppSince installin SP2 - which I had no problem with
installing - System Restore is hung. I shut it off,
restored last know good state, etc. It is still hung.
Late bulletin - Two of my friends who just loaded SP2 are
having the same, "hung app," issue with System Restore.
Please advise.

- Windows XP Support >> Problem renaming driveI am trying to rename a card reader's drive to "CompactFlash" But I get the
error "Volume label too long or contains invalid characters".
This happened after I connected a Maxtor external hard drive which shifted
all the drive letters down.
For example:
Drive F: was previously CompactFlash but now became Maxtor.
Drive G: was previously SmartMedia but now it has to be CompactFlash and so
on.
Why doesn't WinXP accept now the volume label "CompactFlash" where it had no
problem before.

to (1) create a unique icon for the "library folders" used with our
application and (2) to associate these folders with our application so
that double-clicking on the folder launches our application and lets
our application open the library.
The desktop.in just looks like this:

And then in the registry:
To assign an icon to the folder:

Unfortunately, the most recent XP security patch has broken this.
According to <http://secunia.com/advisories/11633/>:
"The problem is that "desktop.ini" files may contain CLSID references
to arbitrary executables in the "[.ShellClassInfo]" section. This can
be exploited to execute arbitrary files with another user's privileges
when the user browses a folder containing a malicious "desktop.ini"
file."
Does anybody know if there might be another way to accomplish this? I
spent a lot of time making this work, and now it's broke!

A few Questions.
I've decided to reinstall XP to resolve a stack load of issues, almost
everything on my PC is backed up to a seperate ext' HD.
Because my version of XP is a retail upgrade from 98SE, I find it a choir
having to keep installing both disks when asked, I have both disks but is
there a way of re-installing XP simply from the XP upgrade disk or must I
have both disks to hand?
Once I have XP home installed, is there a way of making a recovery disk, (
not floppy), and if so, should I first update IE6 to IE7 and install SP2 then
make the recovery disk?
My thinking is simply that in the event of something going amiss, instead of
me having to re-install XP, I can just recover to a fresh desk top.
I religiously keep up with my Windows updates on top of anything SP2 had to
offer.
If I go to control panel, add/remove, I can see all the window updates, hot
fixes and so on, can I back these up and if so can I do so as a whole group
and then re-install after I have re-installed XP?
IE7 favorites, I try to keep this in order and fail, I have lots of folders
with different links in, but if I scroll down, I have 40-50 single favorites
not in folders.
How can I back up and reinstall my favorites and these 40-50 diffrent links?
Last time I had a crack at this, ( I've forgotten how ), I managed to export
and import but found after reinstalling the back up every single folder and
the links they contained had to be transfered indevidualy, a daunting task if
ever.
Outlook Express, same question as above really, I have thirty odd folders
each one has a many messages/details in, I need to back these folders up and
re-install simply.
Can I do all the above within XP or is there freeware I can down load?

- Windows XP Hardware >> Attaching Temperature ProbesI have a digital readout with two separate temperature
probes. The probes are small and flat and originally
came with some small pieces of tape to hold them in
place. Well, the tape has lost its stickiness and scotch
tape doesn't seem to work too well. I'd like to stick
one on the CPU heatsink and one on the video card
heatsink. Do you think that I could use a glue to hold
them in place? I obviously don't want to use something
that will melt or even catch on fire. Does anyone have a
suggestion of what to use exactly? Tape just doesn't
seem to hold up and the probes come free after a short
while. Thanks.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Windows - Registry Recovery messageAfter installing Windows XP SP2 I started seeing a message
as the desktop loads that says:
"A Windows Registry file had to be recovered from a log or
backup file. The recovery was successful."
I click "OK" and continue as usual with no further
problems. It happens about 75% of the time I boot up.
Nothing unusual about my PC; normal user software, DSL
internet, etc. Dell 4400 hardware. The message gives no
hint of which file is replaced. If I un-install SP2 the
problem disapears. Microsoft tech is baffled tho he said
others have reported this problem. I have tried disabling
things during start up with MSConfig and have run Defrag
and the file scan thing I can't think of the name right
now. Also, ran the utility that checks for versions of the
Windows protected files.
I am looking for any procedures to discover the origin of
the file that is replaced. I don't have a clue as to the
offending software.

- Windows XP Update >> Error 80070436Hi, i have a laptop Acer with Ati Radeon Express 1100 Graphics Card. Its
quality is very low, i can hardly play games created 3-4 years ago but one
day after an update it seemed to have great perfomance. That is i usually
play Call of Duty 2. That day the game played perfect. However, after a
restart, everything became as it was before. Terrible.... I noticed that what
caused this change was the ATI 4379 Serial ATA Controller which is the only
one that my computer cannot install no matter how many times i have tried. It
shows Error 80070436 and i don't know how to fix it. Can anybody help me???

- Windows XP >> Network Controller Missing From Device Manger, Won't Re-installI have an IBM T30 laptop (it's just over 1 year old and now out of warranty)
that uses a wireless network card to connect to the internet. I use Firefox
as my netbrowser. Usually, I put my laptop into sleep mode over shutting it
off when I am not using it. Yesterday, I took my computer out of sleep mode
and went to use Firefox to discover that some sort of error had occured in
Firefox. I must have left the Firefox window up before I put my computer in
sleep mode but I don't remember.
After acknowledging the error message, I realized that my laptop was no
longer connecting to the Internet. I went into the Device Manager and the
driver that controls the network card had uninstalled itself. This has
happened once before so I had re-installed the driver from the manufacturer.
This corrected the issue last time.
This time it didn't help because the network controller is also gone from
the device manager and when you reset the computer, XP attempts to re-install
the network controller driver but cannot complete the action. Because I
cannot connect to the internet, I cannot dl the driver and I wouldn't know
where to begin. Thusly, reinstalling the other driver doesn't take either.
When I re-check the device manager, neither are present anymore.
I've considered doing a system rollback to a XP checkpoint where all the
drivers were correctly working but I don't know if that would actually do
anything. I don't even know if the Firefox error is linked to this issue.
I'm not sure what to do and my computer is pretty gimped until I can fix its
network controller issue. What do I do?
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

product key for my Windows XP software is been torn off, ergo lost my product
key. Is there anyway I can recover my product key? I have the software copy
with me.

Try unformatting the drive (there is software that will do this, or at
least attempt to).

I'm wondering if I'm missing something...
I have a computer that currently has an "Advanced Configuration and
Power Interface (ACPI)" HAL. I want to move it's hard disk to a
machine that has an "ACPI Uniprocessor" HAL.
I was thinking I could "sysprep" the computer with "mini-setup"
checked, then replace the hal.dll file from a different "ACPI
uniprocessor" computer before booting the hard disk in the other CPU.
But, that didn't work...
Yes, I could reinstall Windows at this point, but I'm curious if
there's more to just replacing the one "hal.dll" file to get it to
recognize the new computer hardware using the method above.
Any suggestions?

got a notice about checking my certification, then asked me to download
active x control, did that and everything worked fine. Today when I wanted to
check my up dates I get as far as waiting for Active x to show up to click on
and install , but it does not appear.I waited, rebooted, tried several times
and nothing happens.I checked my settings, set to default under security
cannot figure out why nothing happens.What could be causing this when it does
get me to the page and all-running sp2, windows xp.

- Windows XP Support >> Wallpaper Changer Power Toy skips images!Lately, as Wallpaper Changer advances through images, it has been skipping
over large blocks of files. It only happens in one folder, which has 1,120
image files. So I'm wondering if there is an upper limit on the number of
files the program can manage in a single folder. Does anyone have any
knowledge or insight about this?

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> few computer problems.well I have a few problems just in addition to my computer running slow
lately. When my windows starts up it gives me the following error message
"the application failed to initialize properly (0xc0150004). Click on OK to
terminate the applcation" for something called dlbtbmon.exe. and i also
receive that same message when I try to open my cd burning program "Record
Now" Also whenever I try to open a newer version of Windows Media Player, I
receive this message: "windows media player is not installed properly and
must be reinstalled" but i've tried this numerous times, only to receive the
same message. Because of this I cannot use any newer versions besides a very
old version. A few months ago I had a message on the bottom of my screen
saying something about a hard drive crash being possible, but then it just
went away. I've used so many different things to try to clean out my
computer and fix these problems, including registry mechanic, which i now
regret that i used because of what i read in other topics. Well any help
would be greatly appreciated, if I can think of anymore of the problems i've
had i'll post them here too. Thank you very much for any help.

- Windows XP Setup >> Long time to delete first file.Just wondering what would cause WinXP SP2 to take a long time (about 20 seconds)
to delete a file. This only happens on the first file after booting (or
rebooting but not after logging off & on), all subsequent files delete in a
blink of the eye.
Everything else seems to be working fine. I can learn to live with it (I'd
rather not) but it is annoying.
Any (productive) suggestions appreciated.

Central Time Zone. When a user receives an calendar event it is off
by an hour. For example, if a meeting is schedule for 9:00 am CST
their Outlook Calendar shows it at 8:00 am CST. I have checked their
time zone and it is correct.

if someone cleverly figured out how to impersonate these
critical update messages.
Can you tell me what Microsoft does to ensure that

messages before acting on them?

Is there a way I can do an install manually or is there a setting I can choose on the PC so that when I go to install other softwares in the future this won't happen again.
