I have a .bat file which has a command that installs a registry entry. I
have this .bat file execute at system startup through group policy. The
things is it not working at system startup. If i login and execute it, it
will then install. Anyone know why? is it something to do with the system not
being able to access the registry at system startup.

anyway since installing sp2 my comp hasnt been the same, ive got loads of
stuff telling me what to do etc.. which i dont understand, & one of my fav
programes wont work, i dont have a clue what to do. is it possible for me to
send a copy of all my errors to someone? (someone told me i could) that they
could explain to me whats wrong? or can anyone tell me if there is any truth
in someone being able to comunicate with me online in which they can read &

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> files and settings transfer ??My question may or may not be simple...I have always had a problem with sp2
and have had to remove it more than once ..I would like to reinstall it
however I want to do it by adding my programs to it (slipstreamed xp disc)
rather than adding sp2 to my system and finding out that there is still a
problem and having to once again remove it....Can I use the files and
settings wizard to copy all my programs onto another drive then reinstall
windows on this drive than transfer them back ?? Any advice or a different
way to accomplish what I need would be incredibly appreciated...

- Windows XP Network >> How to connect XP Home and Win2K?Hi,
currently my network system is configured as follow,
D-Link Internet Router-> desktop running Win2K
-> laptop running XP Home
i.e. the Internet Router is connecting to both desktop running Win2K and
laptop running XP Home.
Both are able to connect connect to Internet, but when I want to share or
transfer files between them it's not possible.
How do I overcome this problem?
I'm a newbie to setting up a Intranet

- Windows XP Setup >> Can't see D drive after upgrading to XPI just upgraded to XP (From 98SE). I have a pentium III
500mghz machine with 2 hard drives (c=20Gig(WD), and
d=80Gig(WD)). After I upgrades to XP, windows will not
recognize the D drive (although the device managers see a D
drive, but when I use explorer, it cannot read it and asks
to format it). Also, the device manager thinks that it is a
32Gig drive not 80Gig.

- Windows XP Setup >> Need help with XP Pro install to a Serial ATA drive - getting error every time and want someone to explain it please!! It's driving me nuts!!I am trying to install XP Pro with SP2 slipstreamed onto a Serial ATA Drive.
At the commencement of the process I have to press F6 to install the SATA
drivers.
Everything goes fine until I have selected the required driver and press the
Enter key to load it.
At that point I get the following error message:
"File \WINXP\fasttx2k.sys caused an unexpected error (18) at line 2113 in
d:\xpsprtm\base\boot\oemdisk.c."
I tried installing XP Pro from the original disk and got a virtually
identical error message:
"File \WINXP\fasttx2k.sys caused an unexpected error (18) at line 2108 in

I have learnt elsewhere that the error (18) relates to some problem with a
file location, but I have no idea what the heck is going on.
I would really appreciate it if someone who can interpret this mess would
explain it to me please!

after connecting to the host computer, it automatically
logs me on. My user name and password are already in
there. How can I prevent this, so my user name and
password must be typed in? I feel very vulnerable here.
I have already gone into control panel and changed the
way users log on and off to not use the welcome screen,
but I can't figure out how to use the classic logon
prompt. Thanks.

to the internet thru a DSL modem. How can I (as an administrator) prevent
specific user(s) from connecting to the internet? I am a firefighter, not a

folder, I get this message.
" \\ xxxxx\xxx is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this
network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you
have access permissions. Access is denied.

Hi there jmwills,
Thank you for your response.
There is no 3rd party firewall.
There is a "public" folder on the Vista PC, (which was automatically created
when I created the network) to which I have full access from my XP PC. I have
compared the permissions for this folder and folders that I created and can
see no difference.
Windows XP shows if it has (Windows) firewall on or off, but I can find no
such notification on the Vista connection. Could it be Vista has a firewall
protecting these folders and I just can't see it?

take it to and from work each day... however, i need to edit the images i
take and have been doing that on an evening when i get home... on my PC due
to contrast and colour issues with the laptop and screen position... what i
want to know is.. can i put a standard monitor in my shop... and then just
plug it into my laptop when i get there. laptop is a Hi-Grade Notino W6700

I have the last spybot version installed and since Windows update went to V5
Both does not work in same time.
I have to stop spybot to run Windows update V5 where V4 is alway working.
With Spybot and WU V5 I have in the in the wu log the error 80072EE2 and
can't update.
If I just stop Spybot everything is fine.
I know we can say it is spybot problem, but it works with the WU V4 so what
is the difference between V4 & V5 that spybot does not like ?
Any idea ?

recive the message :not formatated .Then do you want

After that I close the PC and when I reopen the PC in MY
COMPUTER the G partition does not exist.

- Windows XP Update >> Task Manager and Windows UpdatesI have noticed that my task manager has changed - when I choose it, it
doesn't have the top where you can choose different windows (such as tasks
running, performance, etc.). Also, when I tried to download windows update
multiple times, it would download the files, but be unable to install it -
the bar would finish going all the way to the right, but then a screen would
pop up saying that windows had failed to install. Finally, I tried to run
Norton Anti-Virus, and it said I didn't have enough disk space to run
it...does anyone have any idea what's going on? Thanks!

cant start his computer anymore and because of this Im

He gets an window that says Device driver found (Generic
softK56), he doesn't even have an modem installed to his
computer because he is using network-based modem (dont
know what else to call it), then the computer works for
another ~10 secs. and then it crashes. Does anyone know
what it is and how to fix it?

I just built my own computer and I can not get Windows XP
Professional to install the floppy drive. Under the device
manager, the generic floppy disk controller is installed.
I have uninstalled the controller and that has not worked.
I have played with some of the registry settings and that
has not worked. What can I do? Any help would be greatly
appreciated.
Specs:
AMD Athlon 2600+
XFX Mach4 KT400ANB ATX motherboard
Powmax 500W power supply
PowerUp! FDD-AL-1.44-BLK Floppy Disk Drive

- Windows XP Network >> PC freezes when connected to webHi, I have a new PC with XP Home installed and fully updated. We conect to
the internet via a dial up modem and after a few minutes work (this does vary
from instant to 10 mins after connection) the PC just freezes solid. There
are no error messages, it jst stops dead. We have to power off and restart.
When not connected to the web all works OK.
The only additinal software inatalled is Office 2003 basic and Norton
Internet Securtiy 2006.
Any thoughts please

Does anyone know if it's possible to modify the metrics on two default
gateways from a command line or something that can be executed
automatically without requiring a user to make advanced manual
alterations to the tcp/ip network settings?
Currently on startup (having set the metrics manually), the routing
table looks like this where the second default gateway is only used if
the first one is dead. This works okay.

I would like to occasionally switch the metrics around on these
gateways so that 192.168.7.2 is used first but I don't know how to do
it automatically.
Whatever I do with the route command, I always end up with a single
default gateway.
Perhaps there is something other than route.exe I can use?

- Windows XP Network >> Lost XP LoginI have done this 3 times and now I am at a loss of what to do to correct it.
I install XP on my machine and tell it to update from the web and then
install a completely new copy on the drive.
During install I am asked for a computer name, which I give, then later a
username, which I give and I am asked to join a domain or a workgroup. I
elect domain and gain access, setup continues.
When setup is complete it re-boots and I get to the Windows Logon Screen. I
enter the password, it tells me I can't logon, I click options, select the
domain, enter the password and logon to the desktop. Thats all fine.
I can see computers on the network. I can re-boot, log off and log on, etc.
just fine.
Then I go to System properties and to change to a workgroup. I enter the
workgroup name, click OK and it tells me Welcome to the workgroup, then tells
me I have to re-boot for the changes to take effect. I re-boot.
When I get to the Windows Logon screen, I have the same username, etc.
already in the window, I enter the password and it won't let me lonon and to
make sure the username and domain are correct.
I click Options and all it does is remove the shutdown button.
I can't go any farther.
Does anyone know what is going on?

all my folders are read-only and I can't undo it. I go to
the properties page of a folder and remove the mark next
to read-only. But when I reopen the properties page, the
mark is back. Everytime I try to copy files to a floppy
or on a cd, it says that I can't because it's read-only.
What can I do ??

- Windows XP Hardware >> Can't Read DVD-R'sHaving an issue with reading personal DVD's of late. The drive is reading
normal, musiv C.D's, movie Dvd's etc but not written DVD's on which I had
made a backup of my data. The drive was reading the written DVD's earlier but
after I rebooted my laptop last week, it behaving funnily.
My original setup is Win XP Home edition SP1. I updated it to SP2 after I
rebooted my laptop. Updated all the software updates from Windows XP also. No
idea whats causing this issue ? Would appreciate your help ?

- Windows XP Setup >> missing filesafter running norton It tells me I have two missing program files and it can't fix them. first one is C:\program file\common files\install shield\professional\run time\0701\intel32\missing file mscoree.dll second one c:\windows\system32\mapisrvr.exe missing file gapi32.dll I looked on my xp disk but I can't find either one of the files anywhere. can anybody tell me what there for and how to I reinstall them? windows xp home edition
